All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 2

Indeed. We all know what happened the last time Supes went up against a highly anticipated sequel to a very well received summer blockbuster.

With Hobbit already well into production, and now Star Trek, I hope WB finds a way to ensure MOS gets a very secure couple of weeks to himself. He can't survive another disappointing return.

Trek is not in production yet.....it's not even in pre production and it doesn't even have a script yet. Their struggling to get a good script going. I wouldn't panic prematurely at all folks.

I still maintain that if WB and Snyder want a quality Jor-El on the cheap, go with Paul Johansson.

Trek will be one rushed mother if it makes out by christmas 2012.

"I like some of the stuff in this clip, but I hope they stay far away from anything remotely martial arts. Superman hasn't learned it, and this might sound silly, but I want the fight to be more 'manly' than a well choreographed, almost graceful fight scene. Some of the stuff in the Matrix almost felt like a complicated dance routine."

Right on. Complicated fighting choreography has to be well studied and that's the problem. It usually looks way too rehearsed. Even asian masters that make it look like a ballet lacks improv, so to speak.

While Superman is no HULK he should however fight a little rough, especially his first fights. He's new to the game and should look it. Definitely no martial arts either. I always liked Batman's fighting-style, but probably with less boxing and taek-wondo.
Superman also has his powers to use which should create new ways to take someone down. But yeah, a combination of brawling, powers and clever strategy. Should be necessary against a general.

Agreed, it'd just seem silly to me if he started doing spin kicks and complicated punch combos. He doesn't need to!

Okay, your opinion. I thought it was good.

But regardless of opinions, you have probably noticed how much of the Matrix style Snyder uses all the time. And I mean it's a lot.

I have to say, I have never seen a scene in a Snyder film that made me go 'oh that's so matrix' and I have done in others.

while i agree to an extent, i also don't find it hard to believe that Clark knows martial arts. if he traveled the world as a freelance journalist what's to say he didn't stop in Asia and study some of their combat techniques? also, if we're to believe that he's an alien from a superior race what's to say he can't become extremely effective in a martial art after practicing for only an hour or so?

that being said, i certainly wouldn't want him doing too many kicks. he should only use his feet for drop kicks or stomps...but he should certainly use his elbows and knees when there is a chance.

i definitely don't want a graceful fight sequence, but at the same time there really wasn't anything graceful about the fight scene i posted. most of the attacks were power attacks.

this would be awesome too. i would want Superman to show a little of everything. lots of boxing, a little muay thai, plenty of wrestling. even though Superman is the opposite of Batman, i'm tired of seeing a Superman that just brawls. for once, i'd like to see a Superman that has actually studied the art of combat.

Why would someone who has spent their whole life avoiding fights because he was afraid of hurting someone, start learning martial arts?

Sure, its something he might look into when he becomes Superman and starts encountering physical threats, but growing up as someone who can knock you out with the flick of a finger, I just don't see him having any more knowledge of martial arts than the average guy.

Oh no! This doesn't sounds good for MOS! Star Trek being more recent in people's memories.

Not content with frightening the world and Superman fans alike with his god awful attempt at writing a reboot, JJ Abrams now has to square up to this one with his goliath of a movie franchise.

But we all know, David beats Goliath :p

Trek will be one rushed mother if it makes out by christmas 2012.

I'm gonna worry about this if it actually happens... Which I doubti

Star Trek is hotter than Superman right now. Trek 2 will hurt MOS big time.

How so? Always wondered why 2 or more blockbusters in the same month would be a problem.

I have to say, I have never seen a scene in a Snyder film that made me go 'oh that's so matrix' and I have done in others.

The slow-mo then speed-mo thing and the music in 300's fight scenes were very close to Matrtix. Same with Watchmen. Not that Snyder is the only one imitating the Matrix style, I still remember Spiderman swinging from building to building, suddenly stopping in mid air with the camera panning around him just to have him going on after a while.

Superstar comics creators Geoff Johns and Jim Lee say they are bringing bombshell announcements about the future of Superman and the entire DC Universe to the Hero Complex Film Festival on June 11.

Ive been guessing on what the annoucemet could be-well I came up with the following possibilities.
1.Superman gets a Kid(YES!)
2.Superman gets a divorce.(GOD NO!)
3.Timeskip in DC universe.
4.Some MOS news
5. Upcomin Superman animated movie/series
6.Goyer starts writin Superman comics
7.New writers for the Super series.
8.Superman stops being Superman.
9.Superman starts acting like the Golden age self
10.JLA movie is going ahead.(HELL NO!)
11.JLA move is going ahead and is based off smallville.(LAKE OF FIRE NO!)
12.A live action tv series on Golden age Superman.

Jim Lee will announce that he's finally learned how to draw a proper Superman "S."

We know it is comics related news and "bombshell" in nature, so it has to be something that will have people talking

Here's my top four list of what I would like the announcement to be.

1. Superman gets a new costume, which will be featured in the comics and in Man of Steel.
2. A return to the pre-Crisis DC Universe, including the return of the pre-Crisis Superman. (I want to see the big yellow key back at the Fortress.)
3. A complete reboot of Superman and the DC Universe. Start everything at issue one and then in a few years, go back to the old numbering for Action #1000.
4. A 'One more day' type story. This would get rid of the albatross that is Superman's marriage to Lois Lane.

1.Superman gets a Kid(YES!)

How would this be a good thing?
I've heard others suggest it and I don't see the benefit of it.
Superman getting a kid sounds like something that would elicit a glee factor from the Smallville crowd.
How does Superman having a kid benefit the character? More importantly, how would that increase sales?
It didn't work to well for Bryan Singer's effort.

Hahahahhaha. Let's start: Noooooo, Superman is perfect and super-moral so he should be a super-husband, he can't get a divorce.

5. Upcomin Superman animated movie/series
6.Goyer starts writin Superman comics
12.A live action tv series on Golden age Superman.

Mh, it could be good.

8.Superman stops being Superman.

I don't know why this kind of news excites me. We'd all know it'd be not permanent. I'd want to know the reasons.

11.JLA move is going ahead and is based off smallville.(LAKE OF FIRE NO!)

So, it'd finally take more than 10 season to finally see a Smallville-based Superman. :woot:

Exactly. As long as they are released at least two weekends apart, then they can co exist just fine. Plus some people are acting like the Trek film was some Box Office juggernaut....it most certainly was not.

Fans and the general movie public going are hungry to see a true to source material, fresh, epic and action packed Superman film.

If it's two weeks apart it won't be a problem, but if they open the same week that's a problem. I don't care how good Man of Steel is, if it goes head to head against Trek 2 it's going to lose. When was the last time you saw two movies have great openings the same weekend? I would space the dates out a little bit if I was WB.

Man of Steel and Trek 2 will be going after the same audience, so somethings gotta give.

Yeah, they need to space it out. I'm really worried about Green Lantern only opening a week after Super 8. If Super 8 is as good as the buzz is about it, it could hurt GL. But I'm not sure if that many people are really hyped for it, or if it's mostly just geeks like all of us. Of course, the same could be said for Green Lantern.

I'm actually glad GL is opening a week after Super 8 and not the week before.

I don't think that many of the general movie going public are that hyped for Super 8 quite honestly. With such a packed summer for movies, it would seem these films are just cancelling eachother out when it comes to their total potential Box Office domestic takes.

this announcement is at a screening for Superman and Superman 2 so I wouldnt count out any movie related bombshells

adding to my list
13.Lois Lane dies(suprisingly okay with that)

Yeah, I know that the movie fanatic crowd and the Abrams worshippers are hyped for it, but I haven't heard much buzz from other people. Maybe I just haven't noticed it though, I don't know. I'm certainly interested in seeing it, but it's not as high on my list as GL or Cap. (Of course, I'm a superhero nut, so that's why).

I think Trek 2 can easily make a Christmas 2012 release date. If they begin filming in September as planned and assuming 3 months principal photography, that gives them a year of post production. Lots of time.

Fans are yes, the general public is not going hungry for a Superman movie that is true to the source material. Maybe action packed yes. General public doesn't care about source material.

They won't rush it. I think Paramount and the Producer's know they have a hot hand with Trek and aren't going to risk screwing anything up, you could even say they are borderline paranoid about a letdown. That, and no one knows if Abrams will direct and that has to influence the script Paramount chooses.

I would love to see Man Of Steel do for Superman what Abrams Trek did for Trek. Right after watching Abrams Trek, I immediatly thought that the Superman reboot should use it as a template for tone, dialouge, character portayal, and action.
