All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 2

So in other words, this is really a Do or DIE situation for a Superman origins film?

this is do or die, sink or swim, kill or be killed for ANY Superman film because the last one didn't make significant waves and if this one doesn't work then we're stuck with another "Incredible Hulk" which as we know didn't produce a sequel and is only getting another movie because of the Avengers.....but yes, this is do or die especially for an origin film.

Well, as King Theoden of Rohan once said in the Two Towers:

"If this is to be our end, then I would make it such a end"

I really hope that all of the creative minds involved really go out to make this film into a INSTANT classic.

For over 30 years, we've had S:TM used as the "definitive" superman version for following incarnations to follow and take liberties from.

I hope that once MOS is released, that MOS WILL BE that film that future versions (assuming if there are any past the snyder/Nolan films) that take liberties from MOS.

Good point. If this movie fails it's clear that it will be hard to see another Superman movie at least for 15-20 years. But IMO they are finally doing the right things...
But, IMO, if the movie is good it will be a success (expecially on dvd/blue ray) and everybody (Siegels included) will be happy.

This right here is the #1 reason why the legal battle over Superman will not amount to anything more than DC/WB just settling by paying the Siegel & Shuster estates a tidy sum and/or royalties...........

.....right there, that's it, one of the most recognizable brand insignias on the planet, and DC/WB owns it lock, stock, and barrel. From a business/financial perspective it's MUCH more important than any of the story elements the heirs could grab legal rights to. People who've never cracked open a comic-book in their lives and who don't give two craps about Superman himself as a character, still will happily display that symbol on their t-shirts, coffee mugs, car windshields, hell even their underwear. And the heirs don't have even the slightest claim to it. Trying to market their own Superman without that symbol wouldn't net them much at all, and if they tried to use it or a close approximation DC/WB'S lawyers would tear them to shreds. Meanwhile, DC/WB would be only slightly inconvenienced storywise due to losing certain elements of the origin, but could(and would) still make a mint off the merchandising w/the shield. I really don't think they actually want to gain legal control of the origin elements, they are just using whatever means they can to get fair compensation from WB. And if they DO get legal control of those elements the most they will do is use THAT to get compensation by simply leasing or selling them back to WB. Either way, WB, by virtue of being in the stronger position no matter what the court outcome, will either settle before a court decision is reached or buy the rights back after, but either way WB will still have full rights to Supes for a long time to come.

Sorry, If this was posted earlier, but has anybody seen this yet? It's FRICKING EPIC!!!!

Ok that was indeed epic!

Still, i have to wonder why Bruce and Diana didnt help superman in time and what does Batman hope to achieve vs Doomsday. Eh, but dont mind me, i'm being pedantic again. That was great.

Well, this was in the description:

Superman Doomsday short fan film part 2 -- Funeral For a Friend. Keeping in tone with part 1, the dialogue is minimal as I am trying to tell the story through images and music almost like a "silent movie".

In this quick chapter, I wanted to dramatically slow down the pace and focus on people close to Superman while experiencing the funeral from their POV. I wanted to separate this from other massive scale funeral vids with tons of cameos by keeping it smaller and more intimate. I also wanted to touch on the relationships between the core three members of the Justice League because in my vision, although they are friends, the Justice League has not been formed yet. Unknowingly, this is the moment that truly brings them together and it begins with Batman and Wonder Woman in their quest to avenge Superman's death.

I am fully aware that there is a huge logical problem by having a funeral while Doomsday is still on the loose. Yes, common sense would dictate that Batman and Wonder Woman immediately attack Doomsday, and Metropolis postpone a funeral for a later time. And yes... that was initially going to the next video. However I felt it was necessary to slow it down for the second act, have the characters pay their respect, and add some emotional drama before escalating to all out action in part 3. So I'm hoping it's something that can be overlooked for the sake of entertainment as we move forward to the finale. And I'm hoping to make the finale as epic as possible! I'm coming up with ideas at this very moment and it's just a matter of making it work, so stay tuned!

Can't wait for part 3^^

Kurosawa can defend the families all he wants but the fact of the matter is that writers work for companies and the characters they create belong to the companies. So if they deserve some portion of the income, that's fair, but giving the whole thing back to the creator seems a bit much. I guess it depends on the details and arrangements but this new law sounds like an afterthought. "Well those guys didnt get nothing so far, so lets give them back everything".

tl;dr i think that the creator should get his share of profits but not the whole thing. In the end, you can write for Vertigo and get everything, but if you write for DC, you should know how it goes.

Cool! Thanks a lot! Its true that those details dont matter in the end. The furenal and flashbacks are epic. The Clark - Bruce handshake especially had me raging that we havent got a S/B movie yet. Damn it DC!

Btw, DAT BECKINSALE. See, she naturally looks like Lois, so forgive me if i'm skeptical about Adams.

Agreed.I'm skeptical about Adams too. It's funny, as Beckinsale was my first choice as well, back when Lois wasn't casted yet. I am sure, If she was given the chance, she would have made this role, her own!

Bah, don't be skeptical about Adams. She will be excellent as Lois.

And anyway, Beckinsale is older than Adams so we probably get the same complaints also if she was cast as Lois instead. :csad:

Well with WB's announcing an official release date for The Hobbit on December 14th 2012, then WB's should prepare to set a release date for Man Of Steel on Wednesday December 26th or Friday December 28th.

That's a good two weekends apart for the Holidays, so they won't be competing head to head against each other. Man Of Steel is ahead of schedule compared to the troubled Trek sequel, which isn't even in pre-production yet.

If WB's assigns Man Of Steel a Dec 26th or 28th release date, then Trek may wind up getting squeezed in between Hobbit and Man Of Steel on Friday December 21st?

Bad spot for Trek if that winds up happening and good spots for both The Hobbit and Superman Man Of Steel...potentially of course. WB's needs to snag the December 24th or December 26th release dates for Man Of Steel asap IMO.

no...MOS needs to come out before the 21st (the end of the world). i don't want to see the MAKING of this movie only for the world to end before we see it in it's entirety.

I hope so as well but based on the last performance of a Superman film, I think the suits will be shaking in their boots and wont let certain liberties be taken like last time. Singer had it freaking good in regards to creativity, its a shame he didn’t do much with it apart from copy and paste what Donner achieved all those years ago.

More like Christmas Day for The Man of Steel than Boxing Day.

I don't believe WB's would release Man Of Steel on XMas Day on a Tuesday?

More than likely WB's will release the film the day AFTER XMas on Wednesday the 26th or that Friday the 28th.

Regardless, that's a bad spot for the big bad Trek sequel that you and a small few seem to be worried about if they do get squeezed in on the 21st between The Hobbit release date and the Superman release date.

Christmas Day is one of the biggest movie-going days of the year. Yes, they'll put Superman there if need be. The whole point of making it a big Christmas release doesn't mean you open it the day after Christmas.

Actually, it's about the whole WEEK of XMas vacation that also leads up to New Years and the weekend after New Years not just XMas day.

That's when a crap load of people are taking one full week or two full week vacations and or off time away from work. The college students, teenagers and under 13 year old kids are all off from school. It shouldn't just be about one day, it should be about from XMas all the way through New Years to the weekend of the Jan 4th.

Agree to disagree......again.

I can actually see that happening. The universe giving Superman fans the ultimate finger.

If I had things my way, MOS would be released THIS Christmas, instead of next.lol
