.....right there, that's it, one of the most recognizable brand insignias on the planet, and DC/WB owns it lock, stock, and barrel. From a business/financial perspective it's MUCH more important than any of the story elements the heirs could grab legal rights to. People who've never cracked open a comic-book in their lives and who don't give two craps about Superman himself as a character, still will happily display that symbol on their t-shirts, coffee mugs, car windshields, hell even their underwear. And the heirs don't have even the slightest claim to it. Trying to market their own Superman without that symbol wouldn't net them much at all...

Well… if the point and goal was to keep a trademarked logo in the public consciousness in order to sell t-shirts and coffee mugs, you might have an argument.

But I suspect that most Superman fans want more than being able to successfully compete against the Nike swoosh. So it does come down to story and how much in the way of “raw material” a storyteller has to work with.

How much did the general audience know about Iron Man or Thor before those movies became hits? What is the official logo of Iron Man or Thor? Does anyone care? Or are audiences just looking for an entertaining movie?

A period/nostalgic Action #1 version of a Superman movie could, conceivably, do quite well. And I doubt that the absence of the :super: would be the make-or-break issue as far as box office totals are concerned.

I don't like the idea of Superman: Man of Steel going up against Star Trek 2 & The Hobbit. I don't understand placing The Hobbit in December with Superman, strange move by the Brothers Warner, unless they are moving Superman. But where can they move it?

I don't like the sound of that either because December is pretty crowded.

But didn't Snyder said on an interview that he doesn't know what the release date will be and that he's just focusing on making the movie and letting the studio decide when to release it?

The Hobbit and Man Of Steel are both WB's properties. Especially if WB's assigns Man Of Steel the XMas week release date starting on Dec 25th or 26 then that would be a two good weekends in between Hobbit and MOS. It looks like WB's would attempt to basically corner the December Holiday and January New Years movie market. The Hobbit would have two good weekends to itself to rake in the dough before Man Of Steel is released....potentially.

Paramount would put the Trek sequel in a VERY bad spot if they try and squeeze the release date (Dec 21st) right smack within a week of both The Hobbit (Dec 14th) and the potential Superman Man Of Steel reboot film release dates (Dec 25th or Dec 26th). Then all of a sudden, the big bad Trek sequel wouldn't look so scary as some thought a week ago would it?

I would put my money on more of the general movie going public wanting to see The Hobbit and Man Of Steel over a Star Trek movie. Star Trek is NOT Star Wars.

I'm just surprised WB's doesn't want to move The Hobbit to Summer 2013 and just have that film be their main tentpole. Is it still possible that WB's moves The Hobbit or Man Of Steel to Summer 2013? I think it's more likely we see the Trek sequel moved to Summer 2013.

Their Trek film will not be able to compete against both The Hobbit and a new exciting Superman film IMO.

Yes. I know. Which is why it is ridiculous to drop both of those films in the same month when they are catering to the same demographic.

26th? They wouldn't put it out after Christmas. If they did, they are complete morons.

The Trek Sequel? I think that is the one I would worry about least. Hobbit and Superman would be most affected.

You can put your money on that, but I wouldn't put mine on it.

There could still be some shuffling. Not sure about Superman moving until 2013. The law says otherwise.

I disagree. You're underestimating Trek 2 and overestimating both Man of Steel and Hobbit.

It is possible that WB could push Man of Steel up to November, around Thanksgiving. I think that would be a prime time for them to do so. Unless...was there some Twilight movie coming out then? That or early November, early early December.

Twilight is there, and isn't Bond 23 going to be dropped in November as well?

It's not like Trek 2, Superman, and Hobbit can't exist together. Holmes, Avatar, and Squeakquel did. However, don't you want to give Superman the most opportunity to succeed? You think they would.

Oh yea I was just thinking that Thanksgiving is a week after Twilight, and probably with two very different demographics. I think a Thanksgiving hit of the film would give it a few weeks prior to The Hobbit's release. I want what is best for MOS, and I'm sure they are thinking about that now.

i hope they shoot for Thanksgiving weekend. not only is it near my birthday :D but it distances itself from the Hobbit and the supposed Star Trek 2 release. not to mention it will probably be a family friendly film and all families know about Superman. as for Twilight, first off....eff that series, hehe. second, as Solidus stated, these are different demographics and on top of that, this Superman movie will be a breath of fresh air.

regardless, no matter when Superman: MOS comes out i'll be there opening NIGHT!!!

Oh yea same here. I will be there midnight showing day one no doubts.

I've never been to a midnight showing but with Man of Steel (if there is one where I live) I will definitely be there

The judge send that Superman had to be in production by 2011...did he say anything about the actual release date though? I think they'll move MOS to Summer of 2013.

imo, midnight showings are the best. hardly any kids and it's (mostly) only other fans who really want to see the film. it's a ton better than seeing the film on opening day, especially after 5pm.

IMAX Midnight baby!

Bond may have more problems than the Trek sequel right now, mainly with the studio financing and lawsuits and bankruptcy stuff.

There is nothing set in stone for the Bond film.

Uhm, Bond 23 is moving forward. They have already fixed the bankruptcy problem last year. The movie is going to start filming late this year with a 2012 release date.

I think Thanksgiving is a possibility still, depending on how post production goes.

Last I heard, is that there was still problems that needed to be resolved. Mendes is ready, but the studio still has some loose ends to tie up.

When are they going to OFFICIALLY start filming?

Like I said before , the movie is going into production late this year so probably around November or something.

If Bond wasn't moving forward because of MGM, then Hobbit definitely wouldn't be happening. Both productions are being handled by outside studios.

Last you heard from who? You need a new person to hear from.

I disagree with you also. I think your overestimating a Star Trek film over BIG time franchise properties like the Lord of The Rings/Hobbit films/books and a long awaited kick ass Superman film.

The general movie going public isn't into the Trek films as much as some think they are. Like I said before......the Trek films are nowhere near as powerful like the Star Wars film franchise is for example.

Man, you guys love to complain and worry about some really stupid things. Must be the bad taste left by the Smallville finale and Superman Returns. Who cares about when it comes out? If its a great movie, people will see it, doesnt matter if it has competition or not.

It's a sequel to a movie that made 257 Million domestic & 385 Million WW with 100 Million in DVD Sales from 11/22/09 to 10/31/2010. The general public seems to already like it and will like a sequel just as much if not more.

Nobody is saying Superman or Hobbit is going to get squashed, but for you to act like Star Trek doesn't matter is so shortsighted.

Nobody is calling Star Trek...Star Wars. Superman and Hobbit are not Star Wars either. If Superman is such a big time property Returns wouldn't have just squeaked by 200 Million domestic.

You can't sell Superman on the fact that it is Superman. It already didn't work.
