So I finished Birthright last night. Overall, it was quite excellent. Great thematic clarity and cohesiveness. Also, it is just so well written. There were some ideas which I knew in advance I wouldn't care for (soul vision, Clark and Lex knowing each other in Smallville, Luthor not putting two and two together), but I didn't care about those issues when reading the story because it is so well written. I don't even really agree the criticisms regarding the "I made it" ending. In concept, it is melodramatic and a bit manipulative, but Waid pulls it off. It is just a beautiful little footnote at the end about hope being rewarded.

One of my favourite parts of the story is Lois. She is just portrayed perfectly. I love what it is that she does that inspires Clark/Superman's love. Also, Perry's keep her/fire her list is just awesome. I hope and pray Goyer drew from birthright for how he wrote Lois and I also hope and pray that maybe Amy read it.

I think DC should give editorial control over Supes to Morrison and Waid. To me, they seem to be the two modern writers I have read that really seem to get the character completely as well as the rest of his his supporting cast.

My only major critique would be some of the art. I wasn't really a fan of the depiction of Krypton visually. Things like the Kryptonian horses kind of broke the immersion of looking at a supposedly alien civilization (I know, ironic, considering that Kryptonians look identical to human). But overall, pure awesome. I think I might lend it to some of my friends who claim that Superman isn't really their thing before we go see Man of Steel. I think it might help change their opinions.

Wow......MOS had its first NBA tie in commercial!

Shots from the trailer with Jor El's monologue and NBA playoffs highlights!

Would it bother anyone here if Superman Curses in the film ?
and would it make a difference if he cursed as Clark and not Superman?

I've always figured he curses in his head :D

That scene in SR when he lets the shuttle go and turns to see the plane plummeting to Earth is perfect to imagine him cursing ;)

But seeing it live would be too weird, since he's never done that.

I think the language part in the MPAA rating is probably from Lois, maybe Perry, and then Colonel Hardy.

I wasnt thinking that he actually DOES curse in the film, I was just wondering how others here might feel about the possibility.
And, yes , it would bother me .

Good answer Misha!

::bows::

I guess I would expect him to curse from a story like Earth One, where his whole character is darker. It would still be jarring, but at least I could see where that's coming from.

Still, this guy is bound to have bad days, experiences that stretch his patience limit to the breaking point. Cursing is a harmless way to let stress out, so yeah...

I really think they could have just adapted Birthright as a film a few years back. I really hope it gets adapted to one of the DC Animated DTVs.

Yeah , I was just thinking if Lois Died ( Heaven Forbid!) that would be a proper context , I could live with it , but personally I hope that he keeps cursing in his head! (And that Lois Lives,of course!)

Everything bothers you man! Superman is not a saint, he's not perfect, is not the end of the world if he curses one time. If you make Superman too perfect, then people are not going to connect with the character as much as they do with others.

 Great review!

It really is a great comic. It works great as a finite piece and neatly encapsulates the whole character and his origins so I think like you say having Luthor be there from the beginning works here, and the ending works as a tidy bow on the whole thing. However alot of the elements I really would not rather as the 'canon'.

I think it definitely stumbles with the whole hologram Kryptonian army though. Thankfully Goyer just went with actual Kryptonian army invasion in MOS.

The closest is probably whenever he use his laser eyes and yelled "BURN!"

If I were running DC, I'd fire Scott Lobdell and give control of Action Comics and Superman to Mark Waid. Hell, I'd let Waid write Action, Superman, and Superboy.

Apparently he turned down an offer to be like the 'creative director' of all of DC Comics a couple years back before the New 52. Really makes you wonder, how much better things could have been. DC is really in a rut at the moment.

I met Waid a few years ago and got him to sign my copy of Birthright...he is a humble guy

And give Superman more titles for god's sake. Batman has like 15 titles.

He's getting Superman Unchained and Superman/Batman starting in June. Or is it Batman/Superman :p Either way, I hope Unchained is a big hit so Lee and Snyder stay on it for a decent amount of time.

Speaking of which, are there any comics that tell of that time? When Lois does die (of old age, or whatever) and Superman has to go on?

That is one from one of my favorite Superman stories .
And he was pushed to the limit by Mongul.
I didnt have any problems with that story at all.
