All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 66

I'm worried that they're putting a size limit rather than a strength limit on Superman to make the physics more realistic, and that anything larger than that tower or the school bus will be deemed ridiculous according to modern sensibilities. I think they believe nobody really cares about lifting feats anymore and are burnt out on them because of Superman Returns(which is sometimes derisively referred to as "Superman Lifts"), so from now on his feats will mostly be based around how far he can punch a supervillain.

Well, he might struggle with a bus or an oil rig the way he would something much larger or heavier but at this point there is still a possibility of seeing trains being swung, planes being saved and a spaceship (no idea of the true scale yet) being taken out of orbit, all of which are considerably larger and/or heavier.

I don't think he has to lift an island (as you referenced) to convey how strong he really is.

It'll end up as it always does, aka Supes can always lift whatever he needs to. He doesn't need to lift a planet just yet. Why squander everything in the first film?

Dramatically he should always have to push for that little extra. Blowing that right away on something ginormous wastes the opportunity for further feats of strength down the line.

Damn wonder how long til WB uploads the HD's. Usually they've been up within a couple hours of it airing. They've slowed down now. Hopefully not too long a wait.

a buddy of mine found this lol I LOVE it, just wish DC and Marvel could do things together.

Well, in all honesty, anything larger than a building will tend to look silly in live action and doesn't have the same visual drama. Just look at how great the Fleischer cartoons were at making Superman's superheroics look awesome and his powers were relatively modest in that incarnation. Silver Age-style stories with things like faster than light travel are better left to the comics where the reader's imagination can fill in the blanks.

I really don't think this film is an indication that they were going with an incarnation of the character where he only uses his powers to punch and beat people up. We have two heroic rescue set pieces that involve lifting (the Oil Rig and the bus), Superman saving people from a natural disaster (the tornado), and it appears Superman spending as much time saving random innocents as well as trying to stop Zod in the finale (Supes catching the soldier and askiing if he is okay). In my opinion, your concern is not supported by any of the footage.

I'll try and upload it but it will take a while the stupid weather knocked out wifi in my area.

It's not that I expect an impossible to top feat in the very first movie, I just don't think they ever intend to allow Superman to break out any truly physics-defying feats, in MoS or any of its potential sequels. It's like the Marvel movies where the heroes are rarely shown saving the day by lifting a sinking ocean liner to safety or catching a crashing jumbo jet or pushing back a state or city-sized asteroid with their bare hands. That's Superman's thing, and so many modern fans want to take those feats away because they can't imagine anyone lifting or pushing something that large without pushing right through it.

I wouldn't even think about things like this if it weren't for all the comic forum discussions. For whatever reason, when Superman lifted an island over his head, it never occurred to me that he shouldn't be able to do that, even with all his strength. I guess I never thought about the subject of lifting-really-big-things in depth until recently. In relation to a fantastic character such as Superman, should I or anyone care? I didn't care when Superman lifted the west coast over his head to stop an earthquake. I didn't care when he picked up a frozen lake by its edge and flew it to a factory fire. I didn't even care when he pushed the freakin' moon. For whatever reason, I just accepted it for what it was, something that Superman can do. Who knows exactly how he does it. I'm sure if you dug deep enough, you would find the law of physics that proves absolutely that nobody can be as strong as Superman and still look like a normal human being with flexible skin and organs. In all likelihood they'd probably be a walking rock like the Thing. But nobody questions things like that nowadays. Super strength is fine, but lifting a cruise liner without pushing through the hull? That's Looney Tunes stuff.

What does weather have to do with your wifi? Do you have a wireless router at your house?

So I'm pretty sure it's already been discussed, but I'm surprised the pic from the ny times article is real. It looked photoshopped to me. Guess it's hard to judge without seeing a big picture of it, and it's just from a phone video on the tv spot.

Now if only Warner Bros. would actually upload them online.lol

Just noticed...Jor-El seems to be standing with Lois in that shot...Just what is going on with him?!

Edited my post from 10 minutes ago lol. Man WB putting me to work!

The service provider is having issues due to weather. Blame time Warner cable. My wireless modem is fine. Their service is out. It's currently uploading via 4g
