All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - - - - - Part 70

I hope WB separates from him soon...he's taking all the fun out of comic book movies and making them realistic and OVERLY serious. You make a movie serious and still make it fun...start making comic book movies, not movies where comic book characters exist in the real world

For me, Nolan is the "mama bird" of DC at this point. I want him to transition out of his position for CBM, but am rather grateful for the TDK trilogy and EXTREMELY optimistic for MOS. As for the rather serious tone, at this point, it's what DC does best at. Every time they TRIED to make a popcorn flick since the 2000's, critics and audiences have lashed out at them. Sure it probably has to do with the films' quality in and of themselves, but DC would be taking a missed opportunity of creating deep cinematic experience as opposed to the 'light' Marvel films.

So yeah, I want him aboard Wonder Woman, but barely, and don't want him influencing more pure comic-bookish movies like World's Finest and Justice League. He's a skilled storyteller, but he's not fond of the genre. Goyer's fond of the genre, but doesn't generally do well alone. And Snyder can bring all the "money shots" fans want while adhering to Goyer's and Nolan's world.

SO MUCH POTENTIAL! :wow:

Couple of notes. Firstly, the theater I got advanced tickets for only had three showings left: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all at 3:10. There was still the midnight opening, however they will obviously utilize multiple screens for that, so I have no way to gauge it. Take that for what you will.

Secondly, in this shot:

I will try to explain this as best I can so if it doesn't make sense, my apologies now.

While I agree that there is definitely some fear, uncertainty, etc in these shots, this one in particular also makes me see some frustration, which makes me wonder if there has been some dialogue. As if he's been trying to talk to Faora but she just isn't having it and so finally he just mouth-clenches and starts to move forward as if to say, "fine, have it your way."

No that isn't how it plays. Faora & Nam-Ek are walking in the direction that Superman is FACING and Superman flies to downtown Smallville smashing into the ground leaving a crater. He sees the destruction they have caused and calls them out. They turn and approach him and he is apprehensive about a confrontation because all his life he has been told by his father (Jonathan Kent) to stay away from confrontation (Pete Ross bullied Clark all through school until he saves him from drowning) to hide his abilities from people because they will fear him. This is the first time that Clark is cutting lose so the best way to describe him in that GIF is "apprehensive".

Regards

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not sure I'll be seeing MOS in 3D the first viewing, if ever.

Pair the fact that its post-converted 3D with the fact that it was shot entirely on handheld and you have the makings of a bad 3D experience.

The little that I saw with the trailer attached to Iron Man 3 made me very worried.

The sense of depth wasn't really there as much as it should and it was very blurry at times.

I don't know. The trailer in 3D kind of rocked my work when I saw it with Into Darkness. That's why I'm so tempted to try it in 3D.

But, the handheld might be a big problem. That's never a good thing in 3D.

You're entitled to your opinion but :whatever:
I'm gonna have to agree with you. I MUCH prefer the serious style of the DCU than of the Marvel movies. Overall, I also think general storytelling and character development is far superior in the "good" DCU movies than in any Marvel movie.

2D all the way. Probably see it a few times that way, then I'll go see it 3D. I just really don't like 3D. I don't want to take the chance on the 3D for my first viewing.

So you're saying more of a "well, here we go I guess." vibe than a fearful yet frustrated one.

Handheld doesn't literally mean shaky cam does it? None of the footage we've seen seems to show the "found footage" aspect. I might just be misunderstanding you guys.

Dat product placement. :oldrazz: But seriously, great gifs(especially the third one).

3D doesn't bother me in terms of how it effects my vision when I watch a film in 3D. It's just doesn't do anything for my experience. The lone exception was the Hobbit in 48 fps. It was the best 3D presentation I'd ever seen and I swore back when it was released in December that I wasn't going to ever watch another 3D presentation unless it was in 48fps.

Problem with that stance was that Abrams filmed 30 minutes of Into Darkness using IMAX cameras and I just had to see the USS Enterprise in IMAX resolution. So, I reluctantly purchased a 3D ticket just for the IMAX sequences alone. It was worth it but it would've even better in just 2D IMAX.

With Man of Steel, I shouldn't see it in 3D because it was shot anarmophically and in a constant ratio. But damn it, I need to see this film for the first time in the largest screen possible. There's just no way I can just go to a regular screening for the first showing of Man of Steel. No way.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Ever since I hade PRK done I cant watch a movie in 3D it gives me a headache so bad that I cant enjoy the movie, so while I would love watching MOS on the biggest screen possible the 2D will do just fine for me cause our screens are pretty big!

Poorly done handheld = shaky cam.

Good handheld = intimate story telling.

Not entirely, IMO. I think a reason why this movie looks unique is because of its hand-held style. Gives a documentary feel.

guys, Kal-El is clearly entranced by Faora's beauty. after all, he's never met a Kryptonian female before.

so, he's just nervous and is approaching her to ask her out on a date at the most romantic place in town.........IHOP.

Man, Faora looks so creepy with that solar shield on ... like her much better when she takes it off and says 'you can't win'. :)

I'm going at midnight, IMAX 3D it is for me. My wife will want to see it pretty soon after so it's regular IMAX from then on. Trailer 3 looked good when I saw it in 3D. But 3D is so throwaway. It rarely adds anything. Booooooo.

As I said in the Cavill as Superman thread, this moment is fantastic. No longer blending in. Having all these powers but not certain if he can stop the threat in front of him.

So you're saying more of a "well, here we go I guess." vibe than a fearful yet frustrated one.

Yes he is angry at them for the unnecessary destruction they have caused. Then he calls out to them and thinks "ok not sure how this is going to play out". Obviously he has more practice with his powers and can access more of them (because he has 25 years + of solar energy soaked up in his cells compared to the mere hours worth that Zod, Faora & Nam-Ek have) which is what saves him in their first confrontation in Smallville.

This then leads to him going to the army base which leads to him and Lois going aboard Black Zero which leads to the dream torture by Zod then Lois escapes from Black Zero (With help from Jor-El's spirit somehow most likely to do with the Command Key) which leads to Superman breaking out of Black Zero to save Lois which leads to Zod taking Black Zero to Metropolis to destroy it and begin terraforming Earth which leads to battle of Metropolis then I'm not sure. Zod is defeated somehow. Is Faora a burnt crispy corpse by now? It ends with Superman having to save Lois from Black Zero dropping her off next to Perry and Jenny before destroying Black Zero then cue Nolan montage; spine tingling Zimmer score; Lois Lane voice over and Clark Kent beginning work at the Daily Planet and putting on a pair of glasses.

I know exactly what Faora was talking about! She wasn't talking about people. She was talking about Pancakes! For everyone you save we will kill a million more! Nam-ek was just hungry and Smallville IHOP ran out of pancakes!!

I don't mind product placement. I'd say featuring a fake store or product takes me out of the immersion more than a real store or product.
