All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 8

Man of Steel has a lot going against it:

-The June release date (the month where everything underperforms).

- Being sandwiched between a Will Smith blockbuster and a Brad Pitt blockbuster

- The audience apathy regarding Superman

- a 200 mil+ budget

- a studio which may not promote this as heavily as they did for Superman Returns

Iron Man 3 has everything going for it, especially after the success of the Avengers. Everyone will want to see what happens next.

Truth. How do you think the Amazing Spider-Man feels right now? Avengers? The Dark Knight Rises? :csad:

Marvel Studios are playing it safe by Launching Iron-Man 3 as their first solo hero movie after Avengers.

Imagine what would happen if Captain America 2 is the movie coming one year after Avengers.

I enjoyed Captain America, but the character is played so straight. You can see how much better Evans became playing off the likes of Downey in Avengers.

Other than IM3 and THOR2 I dont really think the solo-movies will do that great. Well, maybe if they reboot HULK yet AGAIN and seriously amp up the action / FX.

I agree. I think Iron Man should do decent, maybe a little less than the previous two box office wise. I think Thor benefited from opening the Summer, not sure how a sequel might fair.

You guys do understand that I was referring to the first Iron Man. Next years Iron Man(now that they've lost favreau) and coming off the buzz film of the year will be met with loads of success, especially if they nail the extremis story ark and learning the lessons they have.

I'm talking about MoS out performing the original Iron Man. I can't stress enough in what regards Returns was designed from the ground up to lose money. And it still out grossed most of these marvel films.

I can't imagine an international audience seeing footage from say this Avengers film but replacing the characters with a giant S and cape and not shelling over their money. It's just not going to happen. MoS will make Iron Man money.

A good approach would be to focus on the fantasy this time and set it mainly in Asgard and the other worlds and less or not at all in Midgard. But that might not be that sellable.

I realize it, hence my response. I just don't see Superman outgrossing the first or second Iron Man. What do I know though, I thought Avengers would pull in like 150ish for the opening weekend. How's that working out?

For months I have felt off about the way Cap is played in his own film. I knew once a comic book writer got their hands on him, people would see a better aspect to him.

I just imagine what would happen if you took Whedons character and placed back into his original film. I'm sure he would have a lot more to say to Skull for starters.

Couldn't agree more. It's weird because I almost feel like he had more to do and say in the ensemble piece that was Avengers than he did in his own solo adventure. I was surprised how much I did like Avengers, but as I believe Rust alluded to previously, the 40 minutes spent on the "flying ship" solving puzzles and fighting with each other was annoying.

my mistake.
and 154 was my guess for avengers, anything higher than 170 is a pipe drea.....oh my goodness I just heard the news...:yay:

Anyways, I'm a firm believer that tone and direction are the key to these properties. And if superman is given the right direction, the audience will respond. I can't wait to see the response more than anything.

Yeah I'm not sure what the approach is going to be, for me I rather see it take place on earth, but I can see how that might get redundant. Bringing it back to Asgard might not be a bad sell.

Ha. No big deal.

I personally hope that Superman kills it in every aspect, but I am trying to remain aware of everything surrounding the character since Superman Returns. I feel the same way about Spider-Man. I don't think the general public cares as much.

IMO TMOS should outgross only Superman Returns. 220m in the US and other 220-230m overseas (for 440-450m ww) would be more than enough.

I love those Marvel versus DC videos. Ridiculous.

By the way, I was impressed with how Banner/Hulk was used in Avengers. There is one point where he helps out Thor to clean up some baddies and then just punches Thor for no good reason. I was dying. (I think it was Thor?) Big pop from the audience.

I think that is about right, that is pretty much what the studio was hoping for overseas on the last one. 225. 250 domestic for Returns.

The thing is you're at the point where if you adjusted Returns for inflation it would be around the same as the Man Of Steel projections. Kind of odd.

These are numbers I would expect from a sequel to Returns, literally.

I'm very curious would you guys be anticipating these sort of numbers if Nolan himself was announced as director? Is the brand that tarnished in your eyes?

Isnt that a spoiler? At least, I thought it was a fun surprise (and reference to an earlier scene) that fans might think as well. But yes, HULK owned everybody. Would love to see the second end credits scene, but with HULK instead of Banner.

It is weird that today WB would be happy with SR numbers (adjusted for Inflation, inflated by 3D) numbers, given that the budget for MOS is comparable (For SR it was 207 mil.)

- a 200 mil+ budget
.
can we please stop writting negative about expensive budgets? we are comicbook movie fans. its in our interest that movies are big in scope and expensive. in what kind of world do we live that we are against 200 budgets? you think if GL had a budget 160 millions that it would got a sequel?

maybe i got your post wrong so i am sorry. but thank god that Snyder got 200+ for MOS. you think i want fights at night in a forest? you think i want flying only at night or a story plot where the hero loses its powers?

Hey, Show. Think WB is more likely to go ahead with that Superman/Batman movie TMT reported a while back after Avengers' numbers?

Batman VS Superman? Worst idea ever. Seriously. Team-up or GTFO. Anything else is ridiculous.
