Could you provide us a link where Singer says he wanted someone else for Superman? All I read was that he would have used someone else if he had directed a reboot. Let's not forget that big part of choosing Routh was his resemblance to Christopher Reeve.

Not to mention the fact that it would be tough to convince audiences that you've made a reboot when you've recast the same lead actor from the previous series.

As a guy who was around during SR's entire development, people were not complaining about the plan to tie Donner to the films, as most of us (At the time) understood that if James Bond could continue continuity, Superman could too.

Hell, the film was getting good reviews HERE as well, never mind from all the critics.

Its not until it underperformed AND the fact that it wasnt getting a sequel that fans started turning on it, treating it like its the "Batman and Robin" of Superman films.

Now, there's no sense of objectivity in regards to that film. You cant really take most of the comments on that film seriously around these parts.

Jamie's absolutely spot on when he says todays commentary on SR is mostly revisionist. Nobody would be saying anything if we got a sequel in 09.

When this is the consensus on RottenTomatoes "Singer's reverent and visually decadent adaptation gives the Man of Steel welcome emotional complexity. The result: a satisfying stick-to-your-ribs adaptation."

Look around the Man of Steel threads, it's been posted in a few places, he mentioned he'd pick someone like Nicholas Hoult.

It says:

"If I'm really honest, what I probably would have done is go back and retell the origin story with someone like Nicholas Hoult [playing Clark Kent/Superman]."

Which is what I said, and which is different from saying

Bryan Singer states that if he were able to do a sequel, he would cast Nicholas Hoult as Clark Kent/Superman!

You people know the difference between a reboot of the origin story and a sequel, right?

That's why I mentioned Routh's resemblance to Reeve.
That's why I asked for a link where Singer said he had used Hoult for a sequel like the poster above stated.

In a reboot you wouldn't like to have an actor resembling a universe you're trying to distance yourself from.

I would!I hate the movie the momment it was annouced it would follow up to Donners.I hated the Movie more when I watched it.I made up my mind not to watch the Man of Steel sequel-you can imagine how relieved i was to hear itwe were getting a reboot

Whatever. Superman Returns sucks to me and is worse than SIII and SIV. AT least Superman was in character in those films and was played by a good actor. And I laugh at his Nicholas Hoult suggestion. He doesnt get Superman. Period.

Singer didn't say he would cast Holt instead of Routh. He is saying if he could fly around the earth and spin in on it's axis, thus going back in time, he wouldn't make Returns knowing what he knows now. He would reboot it, ie an origin story and "retell the origin story with someone like Nicholas Hoult."

These sites that are running these headlines are ridiculous. "Singerz wouldz recasted teh Routhz! Omgz!" Laughable.

For those who are trying to rewrite history, when Singer was announced and people found out it would be connected to previous movies, a majority of the buzz was really really good on the interwebz. The general public doesn't matter because the didn't know another Superman movie was coming out that early on, just like they barely know now.

My comment saying I'm glad Singer's not in it is not cause of Superman Returns, I love that movie, however the way the film went and ended ultimately backed the film makers into a corner but its more what he's said since his supposed plot for the sequel and stuff like what hes said i.e. the Nicolas Hoult thing (not that I think he'd be awful or anything). Its just clear Singer was never the right choice to reboot Superman or continue the franchise on.

I remember people were happy that it would a sequel to the Donner movies and everybody hoped that Singer would address all the plot holes and improve on the flaws of those movies like Lex Luthor, for example . And the idea of a world that has moved on beyond Superman is still a good one. He just never developed it, it had more plot holes, worse effects, more christ imagery, worse actors, worse plot. Just a bad movie, really.

The only things that were decent in that movie were the plane sequence and the hovering above the Earth listening to problems and those weren't even his ideas(how the hell Superman could listen to sounds in space, i have no idea.). Anways, They were stolen from the JJ Abrams script. So, he basically didnt add anything to Superman at all.

I dont know how anyone can think its that bad Superman IV is one of the worst films of all time and Supeman III is awful aswell bar 1 or 2 scenes.

I love Superman Returns. It's one of my five favorite superhero films... Never really understood the intense backlash. Obviously I understand why many don't like it, but the assertion that it was a terrible film is just completely unwarranted and makes me question people's taste. Same goes for Ang Lee's Hulk. How good it was is debatable, as well as the quality of the interpretation of the characters, but I don't see how many can justify saying it was an awful film.

The only thing about the SR that was truly awful (IMO, obviously) was Kate Bosworth. She was terrible, and deserves all the hate she gets. The rest of the criticism just seems like fanboy nitpicking and unwarranted venom.

The really sad thing are the people who liked it at first but have since "realized" how flawed it was... Had to fit in with the fanboy/internet community I guess.
