All Things Superman: An Open Discussion

The point is you don't get Diane Lane for a bit part, so that means Martha has a big part in the story. Which either means they are doing the origin, or they have a new story where she features heavily; which would be unusual because even in the comics she doesn't pop up very often.

I would hope so, but just because the Kents (Martha confirmed only for now) are in it, it doesn't necessarily mean that it may deal with Clark before he became Superman.

I mean I know that SR is a sore topic here, but look at that for an example. It had Martha, and yet it wasn't an origin tale.

I mean I could see it being Superman's early days since Diane Lane is relatively young along with Cavill for that matter.

Given how Chris Nolan and others have been saying that they want to introduce Superman in a way that hasn’t been done before, I would assume that if this is a origin tale of some kind that they could start off the film with Clark during the days where he was traveling the Earth.

I mean technically speaking; I can’t recall of any superman story that was told in either cartoon or live action format that covered those days for him specifically.

I mean “Smallville” just told on how Clark went from SV High, to 1 year in College, and finally to Metropolis without him traveling the world.

The Donner films just had Clark leaving the farm and going to the FOS right away and spending 12 years there before coming out as Superman already.

There is A LOT of potential imho, in covering the days where Clark travelled the world to find his purpose in life. It could be really in grand in scale, and yet feel realistic since Clark would come across real life problems that are taking place all over the world.

I’m not saying that they should go political and have Clark interfere with the war on terror or anything like that since that would just be pure exploitation/propaganda/disrespectful. You could just have him intervene in situations like what was covered in the Birthright issue.

Frankly, I want to see world presented in the film where it’s evident that the world needs Superman. The higher the calling the greater the reward when it’s met.

Definitely I often have thought instead of making Superman Returns and had they adapted Birthright I think they'd have had more of a hit.

Possibly, but people underestimate SR opening during the World Cup and a week before the first pirates sequel.

Anyway I still love SR and always will as its the movie that got me into the character, I am excited for the re-boot though.

It's interesting that you bring up Birthright, because, after just finishing it today, I would definitely like to see them take a lot of elements from that, especially him traveling the world, coming up with Clark Kent/Superman dual identities, starting out as a reporter at the Daily Planet, etc.

I also liked how Birthright actually justified his costume and him wearing the "\S/" shield on his chest. One of the creators likened it to how people in tribes pass down tribal colors from generation to generation. The shield and the colors are part of his heritage, and the costume itself is based off of traditional Kryptonian garb, so it's like he's wearing the costume, cape and shield on his chest as a way of carrying on his Kryptonian heritage and reminding himself of who he is.

Also, they say that the reason why he wears the big, bright-colored "S" on his chest and doesn't wear a mask is because it pretty much screams, "Here I am!!!", as if to attract attention to himself. It goes to show that, as Superman, he's trustworthy and doesn't have anything to hide from anyone.

It would be awesome if they incorporated these ideas into the new movie.

I've been wondering, does the rights reverting to the Siegel and Schuster families in 2013 mean that WB can't make any more Superman movies from that point on? Or just that they can't make another origin story movie?

IMHO, WB will throw a boat load of money at the families and all will be right with superman. It would do neither party any good if WB loses some of the rights to superman.
If the worst case does happen, all the families would be left with to shop around would be half a superman. Lots of the superman mythos were added much later on. someone that is up on it can tell you exactly what..But I think things like him flying, heatvision, x-ray vision, etc, belongs to WB.
Lois, perry, krypton, etc belongs to the families.

Consider my previously posted theory. Because a movie is happening, they will offer more leniency with usage.

I honestly wonder on what they could have Superman do for his first public rescue that could top SR's plane one without drawing comparisons to it or being considered a knock off from it?

I dunno...maybe something along the lines of having him save a sunken nuclear sub and its crew...It could belong to either russia, china, or north korea.
Two Subs collide. One makes it to the surface, one doesn't..it sinks to the bottom with 115 crew members onboard.

The story soon breaks and news outlets carry the event live. All of them soon have ''experts'' on the air whom are saying that there is little hope for the crew of the sub because of the depth of the water, they are unreachable they say.

Since the area is in international waters, a massive fleet of ships and aircraft from different countries soon surround the site and offer their help. The offer is accepted and several rescue attempts are made, but all fail. The water is just too deep.

Time has almost ran out for the crew of the stricken sub, oxygen is running low.. The Camera shows the subs crew saying their goodbyes to loved ones through the holding of photographs and the reading of old letters. some are already falling asleep from lack of oxygen. water slowly leaks in from different places.

The commander of the rescue force pounds his fist on a console in frustration. Nothing more can be done, all seems lost. The bad news is reported to the world, the crew can't be saved.

( Metropolis, Daily Planet ) we see Clark returning from his first undercover assignment..As he makes his way onto the main newsfloor area, he notices all eyes are glued to the large Flat screen monitors scattered about the work areas. He asks Perry what has happened. Perry explains the details without looking at Clark, when he does turn to look, Clark is gone. Perry shrugs and returns his eyes to the unfolding events on TV.

( back to the disaster site ) Even tho its futile, one last rescue attempt is being hurriedly prepared by the commander and his crew. Other ships do the same. Suddenly, a sonic boom is heard overhead, then another. Everyone looks up, expecting to see an aircraft, but they see nothing.

''we'' see a streak of red hit the water without slowing down, it's just a red and blue blur.

( Which ever new theme is used for superman can be inserted here, it starts slow )...A moment later the sonar operator on the command ship jumps from his chair and excitedly yells out that the sub is rising up from the ocean floor....his work station is instantly surrounded by his commanding officers who don't believe what they just heard from the young ensign, but they see it for themselves on the screen, shes rising.

Other crew members are looking out over the rail of the ship and are pointing to an area of disturbed water.

( the new theme is blairing hard and fast here ) Through one of the command ships bridge windows the sub is seen rising up and out of the water. It's flying. All eyes on all ships look up at the sight. All mouths are open. Some crew members panic and run to hide. Others stand their ground and watch.

After a moment, the top hatch of the rescued sub slowly hisses open, air is heard rushing in. Two men are seen emerging, gasping for air. They look around while breathing in deeply. Once they realize that they aren't dead, they shout for joy, hugging each other, not caring that they are flying, not caring that its impossible. They are alive and thats all that matters. They shout down to the rest of the crew below them. More excited whoops are then heard from inside, alot more.

A shadow covers the bridge of the command ship as the 400' long sub passes over it in the air. A tiny glint of red is seen underneath the sub. A couple of crew members on a nearby American ship think fast and catch the event on their cell phones, one zooms his camera in and sees a man underneath the sub.
The crew member then mutters something to himself about youtube.

The image is shaky but we clearly see a man dressed in blue, with a flowing red cape, and some sort of \S/ symbol on his chest. He is apparently carrying the sub with relative ease.

Thats the scene thats later see on TV and the internet all over the world, the image shot by the crew member of Superman carrying the massive Sub to safety.

 i like it! nice thrill!

Yeah, I can get behind that as well. Topping the plane-sequence in SR should be relatively easy though. ANYTHING else should be better. The above could definitely work. Something that implies that alot more than just the crew's lives would be at stake here. Of course, they could go all Bay on this one and just have Supes divert an incoming meteor headed for some US coastline. I'd prefer the above though. The scale might be smaller, but the drama is bigger.

thanx guys..hopefully what we get will be way better.

Did you really just make that up? Wow.

Thanks, and yeah, I made it up as I went along..I took inspiration from the film The Abyss.
I'm constantly changing it. I've already added some things, and took away others, since you read it last.

Impressive. Are you a writer?

No. While S&S would own the rights to Superman, DC still owns copyrights on most of the character and most of the characters aspects. These include:

The Kents
Smallville
Lex Luthor & most villains.
Kryptonite
Flight
Vision Powers
The "Aura" Invincibility power
Jimmy Olsen?
The current Superman costume
Krypton
Perry White
Lois LANE

The only real inhibition is that the name Clark Kent might not be available along with Kal-El and Jor-El. The film also couldn't have the name "Superman" in the title, but as WB still owns copyrights on the name it can be used throughout the film, it may be the same situation for Clark Kent Jor-El and Kal-El too, though I'm not sure. OR the S&S can just give DC the rights to all of Superman at a hefty price and get royalties for the rest of their lives. TBH it wouldn't be too crazy if WB just said "Nah, keep it, your alright, we can still republish old Superman stories and produce more as long as Superman is not in the title, whereas you can have a backwards super hero that is weakly powered even by Batman standards.

Siegel and Shuster would surely either sell the rights back to WBs or in essence loan the rights to them cause the version they would own would pretty much be worthless.

I suggested this a while back, they could even tie it into the villains origin somehow.

It could also be how they introduce Kryptonite. Superman is hurt by the collision and remants of it fall to earth, and Lex realizes the connection and sets out to find the meteorites.
