The Dark Knight Rises Are there any cinephiles who enjoy The Dark Knight Trilogy?

I'd have to agree with that assessment.

In fact, I'm not a "cinephile" in the purest sense, but in this age of streaming where films are becoming more and more readily available, I could see myself watching more and more foreign films that I may have never bothered to seek out in the past. I'm also something of an aspiring filmmaker, so when I get into 'creative' mode I tend to like to watch a lot of movies and soak stuff up.

I would consider myself very passionate and knowledgable about mainstream, American cinema, but I'd be lying if I said I was any sort of connoisseur of international cinema. I mean, I've studied film and all the different eras/regions of film, but there are still massive gaps in my viewing, probably because I'm the type of guy who will watch a movie I love 20 times and look for new things in it before I take a chance on a new movie. But again, these days there's so much available that it's hard NOT to watch new movies all the time.

I think the web opened so many doors , that more and more people will become interested in movies from all countries (and from the past). At least the passionate ones.

I remeber seeing a Kihachi Okamoto film when i was younger and trying to actively search for the rest of his films and ....it was completely impossible. No releases , nothing. And the advent of home media and the web , made what was a very difficult task...at the distance of almost 1 click.

What I love most about these movies is the amount of work and talent that went into them. They flipped a truck, dropped a plane, blew up buildings; actors such as Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, all worked for the sake of Batman. That's awesome. I think the trilogy is unmatched as a superhero film series with such a high level of excellence.

I would also call myself a cinephile (big fan of foreign cinema, art house stuff and really all types of movies) and I also think that the TDKT is the best example of comic book movies being more than just entertainment.
I really think that Nolans Batman movies are right between blockbuster entertainment and a more thoughtful and deeper style of cinema.
Thats also the reason why I love them so much, because they do everything I like... they are deep and serious, feature Batman (my favorite character in all of fiction) and are also very entertaining. They are the prime examples that blockbuster movies don't have to be dumb or kiddie fare.

Overall its my favorite movie trilogy and I even think that Rises is the strongest out of the three, because its bold and does some things I would never have expected. Thats great and flexible cinema, especially when its about a big licensed character.

It's as if i wrote this myself!

But the question is, are you guys cinephiles? lol.

Usually cinephiles have problems with Begins more than the other two.

I dont understand how people still think Rises is a mess. Not liking it as much as TDK, OK. But a mess? There's really not as many plotholes as people think. Did Citizen Kane have plotholes? Yes, it's still a classic amongst cinephiles. What's a plothole again? Bruce coming back to Gotham? That's not a plot-hole, it just happened off screen. A brace on his knee? Nope, if that's a plothole, so is the scene from dark knight returns. So how is it a mess? I thought it flowed pretty well and everything made sense.

People who care about film more than comics are likely to respect TDKR more as a great achievement in moviemaking and find BB to be the lesser.

In fact, if you prefer Begins to Rises, I might even say that your more of a comic fan than a cinephile. But that is a very broad generalization, so perhaps I will not say that is absolute.

I like all the films mentioned above (Lawrence of Arabia in particular is my pick for the best movie ever made), so I guess I would qualify as a cinephile according to this thread. I'm no critic, but I do love classic movies and I definitely consider myself more of a film fan than a comic fan.

And I loved TDKR. I would go so far as to say that it is the second best comic book movie ever made.

The weakest of the trilogy is Batman Begins, which is still pretty damn good. But unlike its sequels it doesn't really do anything special. It is just a standard superhero origin film that we've seen a hundred times, albeit a very good one (possibly the best). TDK & TDKR go beyond that.

I didn't know liking good films made someone into a snob....

But yes I liked all 3 of Nolan's Batman films as they are great films.

Precisely my feelings as well. It's all subjective in the end.

I'm a cinephile who enjoys BB and TDK. TDKR not so much.

I heard in an interview that paul thomas anderson really digs it..
