Avatar: The Legend Of Korra - Part 6

I'm excited (and admittedly nervous to be honest) because I'm teaming up with a fellow LOK fan tonight to do a special season/series recap podcast. We're going to talk about as much as we can. I'll let you all know when it's up. If you have any topics you think we definitely should talk about, post them here!

The creators have confirmed they are a couple now! They beat the odds!

But quite frankly, I didn't see it coming. But it's just like what happened in Terra Obscura between Miss Masque and the Fighting Spirit. You don't see it coming until the end of the first story. But it's quite touching when it happens. :yay:

Slow clap.

I agree, I am VERY HAPPY that Bryan and Mike came out and stated, definitively, that this is canon. That Korra and Asami are indeed a couple.

"But wait!" you say "you were one of the people who said they WEREN'T a couple!" Yeah, I was, and a part of me believes what I said. However, I would be a fool to deny what has just been revealed by the creators. I both accept, and respect what they did. I know this won't end the debate with some people, but at least the ambiguity of the situation is gone.

The irony being, there was only ambiguity if you were forcing yourself to see it. Much like how many shippers create romantic connections out of no where. There are plenty of reasons not to like it, but just don't deny that they made it as obvious as possible.

I'm sorry Sithborg, but there was ambiguity. That's the reason fans were split. True, a lot of people said right off that Korrasami was for real, and that's why it ended like that. But, there were plenty of people who didn't think they were a couple for very logical reasons. And no, I don't the whole "they didn't kiss so it doesn't count". That's a stupid reason, as anyone with a thought process would note that Nick wouldn't do that in this day and age.

People didn't think they were a couple cause they didn't see it in the story. For many (including myself at first), they saw nothing more than the purest form of friendship between Korra and Asami. Thus the idea of them being a couple was...suspect.

Again, none of that matters now because Bryan and Mike confirmed their relationship. We can now move on as a fanbase. I thought the ending was the beautiful no matter which way you interpreted it, and I think that shows how awesome Legend of Korra was.

Well, they WERE friends. They were never a couple during the events of the show. It isn't until the very end where both characters come into their own and take that giant first step into progressing their relationship.

If it was that moment and ONLY that moment, it was ambiguous. But the last 2 seasons had a number of moments here and there that kept suggesting it. When the finale ended this way, it wasn't ambiguous. If they just walked into the portal or just held hands, but they stopped and stared at each other.

so, if they do a new Avatar series, which element will be the next Avatar? Earth?

Yes, if they follow the cycle (like they should!) the next Avatar will begin as an Earthbender. Which I think will be epic!

It was an ass pull, like Korra's uncle being the leader of the Northern Water Tribe in Season 2 (something that would obviously have come up in Season 1 otherwise). They just made it up as they went along, hence why there was no hint of it prior to Season 3.

The show hasn't exactly been subtle about it.

It's obvious that they just thought of it in s3. But it happens. It isn't that big that they made them bisexuals.

I would hope Bolin keeps the cycle going and is the "old BAMF Earthbender who was the previous Avatar's friend" and meets the new Avatar.

It happens on a lot of tv shows. Santana Lopez/Glee started straight and ended up lesbian by the middle of the 2nd season due to her chemistry with her co-star. Willow/BTVS was straight and didn't become lesbian until Season 4 with the only major hint was her vampre doppelganger being bisexual.

But with the series first being a childrens show and secondly only originally having 1 season, I can see why they didn't think of it until later and with only 12/13 episodes a season and having to be very subtle with it, I can forgive.

What happens if the next Avatar was born an identical twin? How defeating would it be to have your brother or sister THE Avatar and you.....possibly a non-bender lol?

I always thought it would be interesting if they went the twin route and then went the Fray (Buffy spin off) route of having ravaa practically split in half. One twin being able to bend the elements and one being able to go into avatar state or interact with their past lives.

ah. well, I do hope they make another show. It would be interesting to see an Earthbending Avatar. especially after the events of Season 4 re the Earth Kingdom.

I didn't enjoy the Korra series or characters nearly as much as the Last Airbender. My interest was strong at first, but started to wane. Like, I'm not even that interested in watching the finale now that I've read the reviews and know about the "shock" ending ( which I'm not too keen on, either. )

I think what hurt the Korra series for me was that it felt like 4 seasons that didn't really feel connected. I mean, they were connected, but they just lacked a sort of "unifying" goal or endgame like the Airbender had.

In Airbender, the goal was to stop the Fire Nation and the Fire Lord. and it was about the journey and bond of the characters as they worked towards the goal.

Korra kind of lacked that, with each season having a new focus and new antagonist.

Honestly? I would prefer them to take a TLA approach and have very little interaction with the previous Avatar. Roku was important in TLA, but it didn't focus on him save for some big moments.

I would like that here. With Korra, we WANTED there to be news on what happened to Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and the others, but if they do a third series, I would like it to be more self-contained. Have Korra be a part of it (as she's now the first in the new line of Avatars), maybe mention the others, but don't jump into their lives like LOK did.

Just my thought, as that's how I did it for Spirit of Earth. All in all though I really just want a third series.

that would be interesting.

or maybe, the cycle gets out of whack and 2 avatars are born ( siblings or not ).

so, someone from the Earth Kingdom AND someone from the Fire Nation are both born as the next Avatars.

Then my friend, may I offer you a story to check out? I wrote an original story focusing on the Earthbending Avatar to come after Korra. It's structure is more in line with TLA than LOK, so you might find it to you liking.

To be clear, some parts don't connect with what happened in Legend of Korra, but that was because I finished the story just after season 2 ended.

So if you want a new adventure to read, may I offer you...Avatar: Spirit of Earth. Complete with intro video!

It probably would be more self contained since the only reason why we were connected to ATLA in LoK was because their offspring were supporting cast members so it made sense to connect to the past.

If we get to an Earth Bender series that takes place in the Earth Kingdom, the only possible cameos I can think of would be Korra for obvious reasons, Bolin through easter eggs (watching a Bolin movie or seeing a poster of him), and Asami (mainly through Future Industries)

In Airbender, the goal was to stop the Fire Nation and the Fire Lord. and it was about the journey and bond of the characters as they worked towards the goal.

Korra kind of lacked that, with each season having a new focus and new antagonist.

While I was fine having a new threat each season since most Avatars should have multiple enemies during their tenure, I think it would've been good if they had the Red Lotus as a subplot since the beginning and had it come to full fruition in S4.

Red Lotus was Zaheer and his gang from S3, right?

yes, I found Zaheer to be the most interesting of the antagonists, so I wouldn't have mind if he and his group were the central antagonist of the entire series, with the Red Lotus subplot woven throughout as you suggested.

the other antagonists could have still been featured, but Zaheer and the Red Lotus would have been the "big bad" brewing in the background.

so, if/when we do get a new Avatar, would you prefer another girl or a guy?

I always like strong female protagonists ( like Korra ), so I wouldn't mind if it's a girl again.

however, it would be nice to get an older guy ( around Korra's age ) as the next Avatar ( opposed to Aang being a kid ).

also, since Korra was a bit hotheaded, brash, and stubborn, I would like to see the next Avatar go in the opposite direction personality wise. someone calmer and more diplomatic.

even more interesting will be to see how much the world/society has changed by the time of the next Avatar. just look at how much the world had advanced technology wise in Korra's time vs Aang's.

I like female driven shows so I wouldn't mind having a female again but I would be fine if it was a guy again, and if it comes on Nickelodeon it probably will be male again.

And have the Avatar in his early 20s just so we can keep going up each series.

I actually wouldn't mind a spin-off "in between" series that focuses on the time and adventures of adult Aang and co.

we got glimpses of that in Korra, but I would actually like if they fleshed that period out into a full blown series.
