like I said, they probably know from experience. We as the viewer know that based on what happened to Claire early in season 1, and Peter in his confrontation with Sylar. Why wouldn't they know, given that they've been keeping track of abilities for decades and using some of the powered people as guinea pigs?

That makes me wonder if the guinea pig was someone of relevance though. Papa Petrelli maybe?
