Chapter 36- “ The Butterfly Effect” – Discussion Thread 9/22/08

Okay. So all in all sylar has TWO powers. (in a way...)
He can:
1. See how things work.
2. After seeing how something works, he can activate the part of his brain he pleases. So in a way his unconscious mind and conscious mind have meshed...since it seems that he can control something that should be so incontinent and "make it work" as he pleases....in order to actually get that power (technically that isn't a "power" per say since Mohinder says we all have these powers in our brains....but still its a very NIFTY skill to be able to randomly activate dormant parts of your brain :o )

Now, I'd like to just know why Sylar hasn't just activated all the dormant parts of his brain?...I would think that would be a lot easier than chasing people around.
Once again he has to study things to know how they work. You don't give a guy that has never put together a car and just give him all the car parts and expect him to build a car. Same goes for Sylar. He has to study something to know what do with it or where it fits. Everytime you see Sylar is about to kill someone you hear a clock ticking...he is associating clocks with powers and what piece goes where to make it work for him. That is his power.

Yeah, I really couldn't figure that out myself, thanks :whatever:

I honestly get that he "sees how things work"...but I never saw an episode that said he can change his brain. Maybe that is how it is, maybe he has two powers but his power is(was said) to :see how things work. There was no "and"s when this was explain. It was simple and to the point

So he can see how the brain of one of his victims work and goes "Aha...so this is what happens to the brain, which triggers the superpowers"...how does that ability mean he can obtain those powers, he'd have to change his brain...so youre telling me sylar can change his brain chemistry by just thinking about it?

Here's how I explained my theory back in March last year. :)

He doesn't eat brains, he simply looks at them.

Sylar's ability is the ability to see how things work just by looking at it.

The way I understand it is this:

We all use approx. 10% of our brains. So there is 90% of our brainpower not being used. I think this show suggests that within that 90% of unused brainpower is the ability to do all these things, these 'powers', that we see the characters doing on the show.

If a person were to have control over 100% of their brain, they'd be able to do EVERYTHING you see on this show: flying, healing, telekenisis, pyrokenesis, invisibility, etc. Everyone carries all these dormant abilities, it's just that most people don't 'access' to that part of their brain.

Now for one reason or another, some people have 'access' to a part of their brain that not everyone else does. For example, I can flair my nostrils. Some people can't. How do I explain to someone who doesn't know how to flair their nostrils? I can't. I just happen to know how to do it. Some people can wiggle their ears. I can't. And nobody will ever be able to tell me how to, cause I don't have the part of my brain that knows how to do so 'unlocked'.

So the same could be said about these other much more interesting abilities. Claire knows how to heal herself because she just happens to have that specific part of her brain accessed. Matt can hear people's thoughts because he just knows how to. Etc, Etc. Nobody can explain to another person how to do the same. You can either do it, or you can't.

Still with me? Good. :)

Now enter Sylar. With his ability of knowing how things work simply by looking at it, he's learned that by simply looking at the brain of someone, he can 'learn' how a person's brain can be used to use a specific ability. For example, by looking at the brain of the guy who could use telekenisis, he could see how his brain needs to work in order for him to do the same thing. I imagine that if he looked at my brain he could 'learn' how to flair his nostrils, something I could never explain to him how to do in words.

I hope that makes sense. That's how I see it anyway. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it makes complete sense to me.

So yeah, Sylar doesn't eat brains as we first thought...he simply looks at them so he can learn to do what they could do. :)

Now, I'd like to just know why Sylar hasn't just activated all the dormant parts of his brain?...I would think that would be a lot easier than chasing people around.

It's a different form of Peter's powers. Peter uses his memory to "format" his brain to be able to use others' powers. Sylar's knowledge, WHICH IS ALREADY IN HIS BRAIN, "formats" his brain. I guess you've never imprinted or restored an image on a computer, huh?

Sylar also has the head cut open power.:D Even after all his other powers were taken away last season that is the one power that he retained. We definitely need a Sylar backstory. Peter's brain is the one who Sylar should definitely be studying, he can take on mulitiple abilities & eventually seems to retain them. If Peter & Sylar are supposed to be twins then their powers are completely opposite but still very similar to each other. Peter's only main power is that he is able to take on different powers but Sylar is also able to take on different powers also but Peter doesn't have to go to all the extremes to get his powers the same way Sylar does. Peter is the key to everything Sylar has been searching for.

When did we see Sylar cut open someone's head when he didn't have his powers last season? I don't remember that?

Happened with Candice Wilmer when she took him to the jungles of Mexico (under orders from on high apparently) and Sylar killed her to try and acquire her power (after she gave him a demonstration and was revealed to be actually fat). But when Sylar tried to analyze her brain and use her powers, it didn't work because he had been infected with the Shanti virus, so he never actually adapted her power.

I remember that, but did he open her skull with his powers or with some tools??

Tools most likely. He knocked her out first with a paperweight and then, I think, he used a saw. There might have actually been a close up of one before the camera panned to the dead Candice and Sylar exmaining her head.

Right. That's what I thought. He hit her over the head with that mug, but I don't remember it actually showing him having access to his head-slicing power then like the poster above mentioned. He was completely powerless last season until the last scene.

So... Mohinder = Brundlefly?

He may very well turn into some sort of an abomination type creature. Maybe he will go mad & use what he has learned to start experimenting with different types of DNA like different animals & insects etc & then season 4 could be about stopping the creatures that Mad Scientist Mohinder created.

He hit her with the mug she brought, and then used a piece of it to slice her open IIRC. Really it only shows him pulling a shard out and looking at her fat body

Nathan got a blood transfusion from Adam, remember? I think THAT was what saved him. And maybe Lindeman is something Future Peter planted on his mind.

If future Peter was gonna do that why did he plan on killing him at the hospital

Peter didn't want to kill Nathan. He only wanted to keep Nathan from telling the world about them. Shooting him and then saving him accomplished this.

...though going back in time by about 5 minutes more and just saying "Hey, Nathan. I'm Peter from the future. Don't tell them about us cause everything will end up horribly" and avoided the whole shooting thing. :p

LOL! I used to be a huge Hiro fan, but now I have come to the conclusion that he is mentally challenged. Get that tard a special helmet. LOL.

I'm so disappointed with this season premiere... I felt like I was watching a soap opera, so, what now? EVERYBODY IS A PETRELLI! :whatever:
EVERYBODY can see the future!
EVERYBODY will resurrect!

this whole "OMG I can see the future we have to save the world" thing was already done :whatever:, they're doing it over and over, it's like they have no good ideas anymore.

Everyone is also connected!

So...better than last year's premiere, but FAR from great. Very full of logic holes, but I guess we've pretty much come to expect those from this show.

I'm guessing Tracy really isn't Nikki or any of her alternate personalities. She died in the fire. It's her real twin sister Jessica who was supposedly killed by their dad when they were kids. Since we don't really know exactly how that played out, the writers could easily go back and say that Linderman faked her death and gave her a new identity or something like that since they obviously love retconning so much.

Which reminds me, Sylar being Petrelli is soap opera awful.

I'm glad Elle didn't die, and is officially the only one who's actually managed to truly fight off Sylar on her own and take him out, but sadly I think we won't be seeing much of her for a while. Nice to see a Veronica/Weevil reunion, too, though I wish she was a little more conscious when it happened.

Also, this thread is disappointing me! No one knows why sound manipulation could be so dangerous? Ever seen Scanners? Ok, try the Blue Hands guys from Firefly for a tamer version. Considering they've proven with this episode how much love Cronenberg, I wouldn't be surprised if they take it in that direction. I mean, that's a scary villain. I would post a video b/c I just found the Scanners clip on YouTube, but I'm not sure about the rules on gruesome videos, so I'll spell it out for ya: One minute you have a head, the next minute, you don't.

I really enjoyed these first 2 episodes. There's a lot going on and a lot of mystery. I loved seeing Elle again. How hot is Kristen Bell? Yowza! Can't wait to see what those villains are up to. Although they could have given Knox a better power.

What do you guys think about the dream Mama P had in the cab? I'm betting Sylar will help her stop the villains for reasons stil unknown.

I can't wait to see how Adam gets back into the picture, as seen in Ms.Petrellis dream....
