The same can be said of all of the other characters in that episode. Had Fitz botched hacking Quinn's system, the mission would have failed. If Coulson hadn't gotten to Hall and foiled his plan, it would have been over. And so on, and so on, etc.

Yeah, but wouldn't Malta have been totally destroyed?

The whole team and hundreds of thousands of Maltese citizens would have died if Coulson hadn't sent Hall to his greater destiny. When Hall returns I don't expect him to appreciate that, however.

Skye is by far the best character in the series. Liking her more and more, which is good because the other characters are mostly terrible (minus Coulson of course).

Coming form an IT major, there's barely any overlap between technological architect and a computer scientist. Also, I don't think Skye was brought in solely because of her ability to hack. She obviously has very good people skills. More so than everyone else on the team.

I wasn't talking about the occupational fields, but the characters' roles within the narrative. Both Skye and Fitz are of the techie archetype, essentially, but their specializations means they have to have a situation, every episode, where specifically, both hacking and gadgets are needed. It's very limiting and unless they keep the show in a mystery-of-the-week format, it gets contrived after a while.

As for why she brought in, from an in-story perspective, I think Coulson just wants to keep a close eye on Anonymous The Rising Tide. I refuse to accept the reason being "he sees something special in her that no-one else can" because...well, it's just too damn cheesy.

No, that's not how it works at all. If this is all building up to something, then it serves a purpose. That's how a narrative works. If it turns out she's faking and actually has a deeper purpose, then these episodes will be seen in a very different light because we not know the truth and can see the progression.

Whether or not the character has a purpose in the long run doesn't change the fact that she's still irritatingly out of place right now, which takes away from the enjoyability of the individual episodes.

I guess her calling him "Phil" shows how much she likes him; Pepper Potts likes him a lot and called him "Phil" in Avengers

Yes, it does because it's building to something. The episodes will have better rewatch value once you know where it heading and can see all the little hints/foreshadowing.

What did she do to cover herself in glory, exactly? She informed SHIELD that they could use images posted by individuals on the internet? Sorry, these days that's criminal investigation 101 (see the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing). Was it the breaking into the signal and using those glasses to fake out the baddies? Well, that's what I would expect the agents to do anyway.

I get that she looks good in a wet dress... But the criticism of the actress and character, as she's currently being written, does not come out of caprice.

All I've said is that I think Skye's hacking skills aren't why Coulson recruited her, and that he sees something else in her, like latent superpowers; or at least an uncanny ability to locate super-powered people and artifacts.

She used a rising tide hack to get a clear signal from the bionic eye feed. Fitz & Simmons (I'm not gonna use the worn joint name gag with em) simply couldn't do it. That she is more skilled at hacking & programming stuff than them seems a bit obvious to me, but so exceptional as to warrant being recruited by Shield?

Doubtful: I suspect her skills are just a part of why Coulson brought her in: He obviously knows of her connection to the rising tide group and while she is covertly telling them 'I'm In', I'd bet his game plan was to play her to get Shield 'in' with them all along: Use her to get to the roots of the Rising Tide (who I figure will be revealed as being a lot more sinister than Skye believes).

Plus she does serve a bit of an 'audience surrogate' role, ie: an outsider character brought into a closed group who asks the questions the audience might have when they go on about their procedures, the techno babble stuff and so on.

Could all be a big fake out: Rising Tide themselves might well be wondering how she is getting by so smoothly with Shield, so a big show of her being 'outed' is made, then welcomed back into the fold after being 'cleared' making her infiltration seem more credible to them (Coulson's a smart dude).

Her being outed just seems to be a rather big give away for a promo if the obvious consequences of that are followed through (she'd be out of the team into a cell, end of story).

Sounds from the synopsis that she is needed in a big way during the current mission, if she saves the team they might keep her on the team
Or kick her off without further charges, but she would still be on the show trying to redeem herself.
There are a lot of possibilities.

Well I must have misunderstood you then. But at the same time, even if she was brought in for more than just her hacking skills, her hacking skills are still part of the deal. She wasn't brought in despite her status as a hacker. There's no denying that at this point.

I like hot chicks, but since I was a teen and BAYWATCH was on I vowed to not view something on a regular basis because sexy women were in it. That's why God invented porn. So that you can get your regular dose of hot women acting badly. Bonus, you get to actually see them naked. Also they, uh, do stuff.
