it was cute when it started, but now if someone can't formulate a proper response they just bust out the facepalm and it gets a laugh and even if the other person had a valid point, it is all for naught

Not really. I mean, they can be used interchangably to an extent, but there's a difference. You when someone else does something stupid, but you when you do it yourself.

I rarely direct the facepalm at a poster's comment. I usually direct it at a news story or something like that.

Replying with The Picard Facepalm is like the giving someone The Finger. It's fast, it's easy to do, it's a quick reply that you don't really have to give much thought. It's arbitrary.

Getting insulted or being called a name takes more time to type up, and think of. If I'm on the receiving end of a long winded insult or put down I think I would feel worse about myself than I would if I got the finger, or in this case...the facepalm.
