Well for me, it's more of a matter of getting enough skill to at least get a license. I've had my permit for about 5 years but was always waiting for my brother to teach me how to drive, which he has, but only a handful of times since. But I've always been too scared of getting into an accident or hitting someone that I never persisted in trying to learn. But now that I'm 24 and trying to take more step towards becoming an adult, I feel like this is something I'll need to do sooner or later.

I'll be damned if my 12 year old nephew starts driving before I do.

I don't know what NYC is like, but are there any paved abandoned lots or industrial areas that close down on weekends? You could try driving around those until you're ready to deal with other cars.

But now at their age, they are dependent on other people driving them when they need to go places.

Does NYC have permit-driving restrictions? I know in CA, if you have a permit, you always need someone over 16 (and presumably also has a license/permit) driving with you, and you can't drive after 10pm or something. At least that's how it was 10 years ago. But there's no opportunity for you to practice at all, even driving your mom to the store or something?

But honestly, if you can put the car into drive and steer it, all it is is practice. When I first learned, I had trouble keeping the damn thing straight in a parking lot! Now I have no trouble handling the curves at 65-70mph on the insanity that is I-110.

It depends on if you can manage to live in a city with great public transportation all your life. It could restrict you. You NEED to have a car in Los Angeles, unless you live and work downtown and have no want to go to to the beach, even. Not unless you want to spend hours getting there.

There are definitely big open areas around where I live, but normally my brother would let me drive around in the parking lot outside of his wife's job in New Jersey. The problem with him though is that he rarely picks her up, and the only time he really uses his car is on the weekend since he's at work for most of the day, and when he does go out, it's with his family, so its hard to rely on him.

I'm trying to get my friend who just moved near me to teach me, but he has almost the same routine as my brother, so I would have to get him on a day where he's free from work and his girlfriend.

Yeah, this is basically my mom. She hardly goes out, except to work and church. But on the weekends she always gets mad at my brother for not taking her out anywhere since he's busy with his family. She could always take a bus or a train to go somewhere but she'd rather get driven somewhere out of the city.

Yeah, my sister moved out to California a few years ago and she had to learn quickly because of how it is over there. She's always told me she'd teach me if I move out there with her, but I'm not ready to do that just yet.

My brother actually let me drive outside of the parking lot the last time, but even then the streets weren't too crowded with cars. But its really the highway that I fear most because I haven't had much practice making turns in a while. I always seem to have a problem getting the steering wheel back to where it should be after I turn.

True. I think for me, it's all mental because really, if just about anybody can get a license, what's really stopping me from being able to get one?

Yeah, for me it's called "driving with my dad."

Heavy foot is a practice issue. You'll get the hang of it once you have to pay for your own gas or brakes. Plus some cars have more sensitive pedals than others.

Highway actually means less turning. That's why I prefer it to local driving. Changing lanes and watching your mirrors is another thing. But yeah, it's just practice. We've all been where you are.

Yup. I got my permit when I was 18 because I was scared of being in control of a large metal battering ram. I learned to ice skate when I was 16. One adult friend told me, "If you can ice skate, you can drive a car!"

They live outside the City, so just the super market is 2-3 miles away. Not ideal for them.

Spidey, I think you need to overcome driving in a city, which isn't bad because well....it's not highways. Overcome that first and then attempt to drive into Jersey.

Driving in a city is hell. I say that as someone who barely blinks at 6 hrs straight of driving freeway. Driving in Jersey is worse.

at 24 (is that right) i don't think you need to get another permit to take the test.

here anyone can take the test over the age of 19, permit or not.

I'm still looking into it. I saw some places say that I have to renew it a month before it expires, while other places say I can't take a road test without a valid Permit.

Ironically though, my friend's car stopped working today right before I was about to ask if he could teach me to drive. I would ask my brother, but he just got a new car after his last one was wrecked in an accident, so I doubt he's going to let me use his car.

90% of "hot girls" would be considered plain (at best) without makeup, so this actually does not surprise me. But man, the cluelessness of soooo many guys makes me hard.

However, I've read enough Spider-Man comics including Ultimate to know that MJ was always suppose to be hotter in general because she was a movie star/model/actress, and definitely more attractive than Gwen.

Here's an honest confession that's been on my mind for quite some time. There's a part of me that actually welcomes death. I don't want to commit suicide because I feel that is selfish. However...sometimes, I think I wouldn't mind getting into a car crash and dying or getting popped in the head by a stray bullet. That way, I would no longer be a financial burden to my parents or wouldn't have to worry about my looming issues.
