Contest Of Marvels II Discussion Thread

Honestly, a bit. But I was thinking about it today.

So, where are we? (And don't say 'on Earth' because I'm not sure if all of us are ;))

Right now we've solitified the line up and the potential list. We're debating if Silver Surfer and Shadow King should be accepted, as well as anyone else that people are still hesitant about. Once that is decided then we'll start picking from the potential list and plug in the gaps in the character list.

I'm just going to go ahead and ask... is there enough interest in this thing to continue? We're so close to having this list finished and getting started, but there's been next to no activity for quite a while. I know Phaed's not posted in nearly a month, and if he's gone then I have no chance of running this thing alone. I'm not upset, I would just like to know so I can keep pressing or let it go. If any of you have interest, then let me know, otherwise we may be calling this thing quits.

Well, I'm still in. I just haven't posted because it's been so dead, so I haven't thought about it. But I'd like to see it come back if possible.

Maybe what we need is to repost the list of characters, and then start trying to bring new (and old) blood back into the contest.

I just posted the list not long ago, and all we need to do is decide if Silver Surfer remains, which I'm against, and then fill the holes with potentials. From there we're ready to start getting players together and making lists. The thing is, I have to make sure Phaed's still onboard because I don't have the time to run it alone.

I'm interested. I looked over the list, and I read the list needs another 114 characters? So we should excise 7 characters from the 121 potentials?

Yes, and I think we should Drop Silver Surfer from the keep list as well. I just strongly believe that he is too powerful for this tourney. I'm waiting to hear Phaed's oppinion on that, but if one isn't given soon I'll just go ahead and do so.

My vote is to keep the Surfer in.

I'll go through the rest of the potentials list later.

I'm still in also. My attention's been on other forums and RPGs so I forgot about the CoM. I vote to keep Surfer in. If he was really over-powered, he would've won the last tourney.

Alright, we'll leave Silver Surfer in (but I don't have to like it!). Okay, so now to decide what characters to take out of the potential list. Now keep in mind also, if you feel that more than 7 people should be removed, then list them. If we end up taking out more than 7, we can always replace the open holes with other alternate characters that we didn't earlier include due to similarity problems (such as other AoA characters, Exiles, etc.)

I'll be looking through the list later myself, as I haven't reached my book writing goal yet, but feel free to throw out your options from the potential list.

Above is the list of Potentials. We will be adding all but 7 of these, so list the 7 that you think shouldn't be included. If there's someone you're interested in that isn't listed in the above sections, check the "other" section first, and then mention them as a possibility. If you don't know much on these characters, as or google them. I'll have my list up shortly.

I think Slipstream and Man-Killer are good choices, but I'm not so sure about Vulcan and Tag. I personally love Tag and think he could be very useful in this tourney. Kid Vulcan I'm still debating.

Quick question, are we doing the 'can't be in this season if made it to the finals last season' thing? I remember some being for it, I was, but can't remember if an official decision was made.

Just as a reminder, the rule would prohibit anyone this season from using one of the characters that made it to the final four last season. (Then after this season, those characters would be eligible for season 3, and the season 2 final four would be out of season 3).

If we are doing it, that eliminates Dr. Strange and Adam Warlock from the potentials list. (Was Adam in the final four? I can't remember anymore.)

After a quick glance at the potentials list, I say get rid of Shadow King and Jubilee.

I'll look at the others more closely later.

Okay, I think these are the 7 that I would go with.

Slipstream (Lame Factor)
Shadow King (Too Uber)
Toad (Lame Factor)
Man-Killer (Similar to several others)
Viper (Wouldn't go far)
Scorpio (Wouldn't go far)
Fu Manchu (barely a marvel character and has a stupid name :))

I agree with Shadow King, but I'm hesitant on Jubilee. She's not a heavy hitter, but she's proven herself handy time and again. I think she could make it to round 2 or 3.

I'll add Toad to my list too. Lame-factor in the tournement sums it up nicely.

Tag isn't very cool, but as long as I'm not debating for him, I'm fine.:o

The reason I listed Kid Vulcan is because of his limited exposure. I don't think there's enough information for my tastes. Man-Killer is also a bit stale. Feminazi stereotypes make me sad.:( :p Also, Slipstream's power doesn't give him much offensive fighting tactics. Maybe teleporting his enemy high into the air and dropping them is a good tactic against, [insert random melee figher], but he'd be pounded in an instant by anyone else.

Black Goliath- Affirmative action has no place in the CoM.:p Besides, how many size-shifters do we need?

Namor (Ultimate)-
Is there really a difference between his normal counterpart and himself? If not, I say we choose one and stick with it.

Halloween Jack- What are we going to do with his absorption powers? Did we say it was okay for characters to use the knowledge of their previous fights, because his powers basically say that he can, and that might give him a huge edge over his enemies.

Hey, if you guys don't mind. I wouldn't mind adding one more Potential to the potential list, and then have us remove 8 instead of 7. The character is Pulse from Milligan's X-Men arc "Blood of Apocalypse." He's the guy that Mystique brought into the X-Men with hopes of him hooking up with rogue instead of Gambit. His flaws are that he's a confessed coward and would rather not fight if necessary, but he will if needed (which is pretty much every fight here). He wasn't shown as being a big hand to hand fighter, but he showed some type of street smarts at least. The good things are that he's a theif, so he's able to move about secretly and silently. The best thing is his power though. He 'pulses' a person, and drains away all their power. He was shown doing this with Rogue so that she had no powers, and the big thing is he 'pulsed' Apocalypse himself and made him so week that he couldn't even throw a punch, then Apocalypse was able to be taken out by a simple blast of fire from Sunfire.

I think he'd be a good character for removing some major threats if the character's owner could debate him well enough.

Characters cannot use the knowledge from previous fights. His main thing is his size and shape changing powers and his resources.

I think Kid Vulcan has enough exposure for us to go with. He can redirect Energy (his main power), but he also has the same powers as the two girls from the deadly genesis X-Men. Ability to morph dirt, rock, etc. and whatever power the darker girl had. I forget off hand. But we know his powers and his slightly off mindset, so I think it's enough to go on.

I agree with Black Goliath though. And I'm not sure with Namor. They listed the differances, but I don't remember what they were. Someone who reads Ult. FF may want to answer that one.

Can Pulse 'pulse' normal people? Could he drain a regular person of their strength. Or maybe Captain America of his strength and skills? Or is it only mutants that he effects?
