DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 1

I wanted to add a few points:

So, just because something failed, it doesnt mean that the concept in itself is bad, it's quite possible that the execution was bad. Rucka's WW was great, but the book bored me to death. That's one of the countless reasons a book might suck even if the character is well writen, true to his/her roots and what have you.

Personally i think WW was writen just fine by Simone. I mean you re buying a superhero book, you expect her to preach peace in every page? Sure that should be her shtick, but i expect her to fight dragons in the middle of a city or whatever. And when push comes to shove, i expect her to snap some necks, because she was raised as a soldier, a soldier for peace, but a soldier nonetheless. Batman or Superman are superheroes that rely on the government's tolerance to operate because they have personal lives and whatnot. WW is from another world, she shouldnt give 2 ****s about that and that doesnt make her a "HURR DURR GRIMDARK EXTREME WARRIOR". She just thinks in a different way from Batman who goes out of his way to save the Joker. Not killing is his shtick.

I dont get the bondage stuff. Maybe back then it worked but today it will look ridiculous. Her lasso can be used against her since its unbreakable, but do we really need to focus on the bondage and her getting tied up every chance she gets?

I think the most important thing here is to show people that she deserves the status she has and its not just because of some contract or the recognition she got from the tv show. That doesnt mean that she needs to start punching people and blowing **** up, they just need to write awesome stories and expand her universe. GL was really boring to me but Johns made it exciting, colourful, vibrant and full of characters i care about. Hell, in this modern GL franchise Hal is the character i care the least about!

No, he's right. Big sales do not mean big quality. To attribute how high or low a book sells to it's quality is... idiotic, to be frank.

Do you know why certain books sell big? It's because the companies want them to sell big. That's it. It's absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the book. The vast majority of comic book readers are idiots who just follow what books are "important" or have the big name characters like little sheep. Or they have the whole "collector" mentality when they just can't drop a book they think is crap because they gotta catch em all!

Bendis' Avengers for example.

He's not right...

While big sales doesn't mean big quality, lousy sales and a minoriy opinion means even less..

Do YOU know why certain books sell big? It's because they are SUPPOSED to. The best and the brightest are put on a book to make great stories that sell huge numbers. Now sometimes (Like Bendis' Avengers), garbage sells big, but other times you get very brilliant series' that do big numbers deservedly so (like Ultimate Spiderman, to keep it on Bendis)

But just because some fan says "Greg Rucka's WW was awesome" doesn't make it so...

No, the fact that it was awesome does. Though, the series doubled its readership near the end of his run, so I guess by your own logic, it was awesome, too. Guess we're all in agreement here then.

BTW- Nice elitist attitude you have... I especially like how you call comic fans idiots for making books YOU don't like hot sellers...

What other popular books have gotten a bum rap as good ones? If you wouldn't mind enlightening us...?

Damn... Hopefully next time Rucka won't wait til the end of his run to make things good then...

Why don't we get him for the relaunch? Since he did such a good job...

Well, the whole thing was good, but a lot of that came from Infinite Crisis and the whole Maxwell Lord situation, but doubling your readership...that really is something DC should have paid more attention to, but their relationship with the title was pretty strained at that point, I think.

I think Rucka is basically done with DC as long as the current editorial is still in their tenure. He didn't quite burn the bridge or anything, but after he left he didn't seem to mind waving the lighter around

Here's the problem, you're stating your opinion as fact...

What if I was to go ahead and say that Rucka's WW sucked, and the sales in no way represented good quality in that book?

Purely hypothetical...

Have you read Rucka's WW?

Alright.... All of my current fiestiness aside, those are good points. Can't argue there no matter what I thought of Rucka's WW...

Good call

.

But Powergirl, Batgirl and other female heroes sell pretty well. I dont know if Ms Marvel and Spiderwoman have their own books there at Marvel but i know they re pretty good characters who dont have to deal with all the **** that WW deals with.

No they don't.

It's not an elitist attitude. It's just being a realist. Crap books sell big all the time, because the companies want them to sell big.

They'll market these books at the status quo changers, the big important books, the event books. And the vast majority of comic book readers gobble them up.

I mean, event books ALWAYS sell like hot cakes. 9 times out of 10, those event books are steaming piles. But why do they sell like hot cakes then?

It's because the vast majority of comic book readers are idiots who do what they are told, to put it bluntly.

Rucka is definitely the greatest writer who has ever written for DC

His Wonder Woman comic books were fab and so was everything else he has written for DC

Well, I wouldn't go that far. He is good, for sure. But the best DC writer ever?!?

Is it me or are we not seeing a lot of Superman (and family) titles...

I've seen Superboy, heard of Superman and seen him in JLA...but that's it.

Batman gets around 10 titles (not that I'm complaining), Green Lantern gets 4, Superman gets what, 2?

Hey KrypJonian, if you're going to use an Ogden Nash quote you might want to attribute it.

We still have like 6 more titles to go. I think 4 of those will definitely be Superman family books (Superman, Action Comics, Superboy and Supergirl). The other 2 I'm not sure, they might be too for all we know, they may relaunch Batman/Superman in some form and could potentially launch and brand new Supes title or a new Power Girl book.

Don't care how bizarre it is, it's written by Paul Cornell and it has Midnighter, tho Apollo needs his long hair back. :p Short hair doesn't fit him if you aks me.

I'll probably give it a shot since Cornell's writing it, just cause its bizarre doesn't mean its bad.
