I wanted to add a few points:
So, just because something failed, it doesnt mean that the concept in itself is bad, it's quite possible that the execution was bad. Rucka's WW was great, but the book bored me to death. That's one of the countless reasons a book might suck even if the character is well writen, true to his/her roots and what have you.
Personally i think WW was writen just fine by Simone. I mean you re buying a superhero book, you expect her to preach peace in every page? Sure that should be her shtick, but i expect her to fight dragons in the middle of a city or whatever. And when push comes to shove, i expect her to snap some necks, because she was raised as a soldier, a soldier for peace, but a soldier nonetheless. Batman or Superman are superheroes that rely on the government's tolerance to operate because they have personal lives and whatnot. WW is from another world, she shouldnt give 2 ****s about that and that doesnt make her a "HURR DURR GRIMDARK EXTREME WARRIOR". She just thinks in a different way from Batman who goes out of his way to save the Joker. Not killing is his shtick.
I dont get the bondage stuff. Maybe back then it worked but today it will look ridiculous. Her lasso can be used against her since its unbreakable, but do we really need to focus on the bondage and her getting tied up every chance she gets?
I think the most important thing here is to show people that she deserves the status she has and its not just because of some contract or the recognition she got from the tv show. That doesnt mean that she needs to start punching people and blowing **** up, they just need to write awesome stories and expand her universe. GL was really boring to me but Johns made it exciting, colourful, vibrant and full of characters i care about. Hell, in this modern GL franchise Hal is the character i care the least about!
