The Dark Knight Did anyone feel sorry for the Joker at all??

in all honesty, I do feel sorry for him. Imagine what he would have been through to get to the point of he is so bored with the earth and his own life that he has to murder people and blow stuff up just to fill any enjoyment? You see in the movie he doesn't care for his own life, it just seems like he wants someone to kill him, but wont sink to the level of suicide

I felt sorry for everyone he murdered, even the mobsters. There are people who can be reasoned with, there are those that can't. There are criminals, robbers and in fact even the worst kind of murderers who still have some kind of code, their own personal line.

The Joker has no line, has no empathy, enjoys chaos, but what to make of his goons? Why do they follow him? Fear, a shot at making some cash? By the end of the movie, Maroni understood how big a mistake it was to get in with the Joker. I just wonder if the Jokers goons understand how expendable they really are.

Can't feel sorry for the Joker, even if some of his philosophy has merit. Murder is never a way to make a point.

I think most of his goons are Arkham escapees. They are easy manipulated by strange promises...like making their "insides stop hurting and replacing it with bright lights like Christmas"

In my mind, the Joker had a normal upbringing and is of such a high-level intelligence that he feels no moral obligation and would be bored doing anything other than masterminding criminal activities that show off his life philosophy. He got those scars in an accident, or from a mob or something. And he's not crazy.

In his essense, when you break down all the madness, I think the Joker is just a narsassistic sociopath. He feels that he is above any moral code or law and doesn't feel the need to follow them. I think he does things to show others that their moral philosophy is a joke and that the "only sensible way to live is in a world without rules."

I feel the same, and that was a testament to Heath's work & Nolan understanding the character. In B'89 I liked the Joker a little too much, he was funny, but almost never sinister enough for me to actually want to see him go.

But when Batman emerged in the interrogation room, I was excited! I wanted him to break that creep in half, and that's how it should be. This is the reason I was opposed to the permawhite thing (sorry for bringing it up folks) but if he was like that, in Nolan's hyper-realism world, it would need a real explanation, not one of the Joker's made up stories, because it would be almost supernatural. The fact that he's just a normal man who chooses to make himself up like a clown, and goes around killing people with no motive whatsoever, It made me feel zero sympathy. It was a love to hate type of thing, everytime he was on screen I was excited to see what was next, but it wasn't a feeling of love towards him. I very much wanted Batman to beat him up.......bad

I'm not going to fight about the perma-white thing (even though I would have liked to have him that way), but I think they could have made it work and just could have done the same things they did with the scars. You wouldn't need an explanation...just make it ambigious to the viewer and have Joker offer phoney stories about whatever accident attributed to his present state.

The gangsters don't really start laughing at him do they?
Why the hell would you laugh at someone who:
A. Is insane enough to dress up like a clown 24/7.
B. Robbed a mob bank with a scheme so clever all his acomplices are dead and he has all the winnings.

I loved the film because I actually hated/feared the villain and feared for the lives of every character at the hands of The Joker and Two-Face, eventually.

The Joker is scum. There is nothing to feel sorry for.

When little Gamble calls him crazy, the rest of the mob start laughing at him and Joker gets really defensive and just shows a little bit of vulnerability...if only for a second.

What freaked me out the most was that whining sound effect they used whenever the Joker was about to kill someone. Anyone have a link to it?

I love the joker, he's always been my favorite villian. The movie really made my feel for him. Especially the 2nd story of the scars with his supposid wife.

Feel sorry for the guy, and then he will stab your @sses.

I felt bad for him when gambil called him a freak, I wanted to give the ol sociopath a hug

One thing about that: The part where he's CLEARLY bothered by Gamble calling him crazy. I did feel sorry for him, because even though he's absolute and there's no explaination as to why he's so messed up, he's clearly unaware of just how messed up he really is, just like in Arkham Asylum.

Have to say no remorse for the dude (though he is awesome!).

For the scene where the mobsters called him crazy and stuff...no sympathy then for him either. I did not think he looked hurt form the verbal abuse at all.

What he did look like was fricken ticked off (you don't talk to the top dog like that and live). He went to the meeting to dominate and gain/threaten their fear/respect of him. I also loved how his mannerisms were pointed towards Gamble in a threatening way most of the time he is in with the Mob bosses. And Lo and behold, a little later he meets up with Gamble and kills him.

:hoboj: - Ahahahahahaha!

All he wanted was to put a smile on his face! Gamble was a downer got a much-needed-smile put on his face.

Call me a freak, but I did feel sorry for him a few times. What he must have went through to get to the point where he is in TDK is unimaginable. The saddest thing is that he doesn't realize how bad he is. The part where I felt the sorriest for him was when Gambol called him a freak and he says " no...im not". I just wanted to hug him. That's probably what's wrong with him. he didn't get any love as a child, and he just turned his back on humanity. I love Heath's Joker, because I was scared of him, but I also felt sorry for him. Heath brought some humanity to the role.

You don't need to feel sorry for him, cuz he got back at those guys anyway lol
"A guy like me...."
"a FREAK!!"
"..ok, a guy like me...umm I know why you have your little *ahem* group therapy sessions."

True, and he really got back at Gambol.:)

I think I can understand how some other people would feel sorry for him based on the fact that Heath brought so many childish traits to the role.

Joker had a childish glee, and he also was self obsessed and tempermental just like kids in "the terrible twos." There was a great deal of those qualities in his character, which then only makes you think that some sort of deep seated trauma experienced in early childhood has kept him from properly developing into an adult... even a sociopath doesn't typically skip around like a little girl or slide down piles of money when it's important to be "mocho" around all the other killer mobsters and criminal types. Clearly the Joker does not understand what appropriate behavior IS in any given situation... he can't control all his little ticks and unconscious actions.

So if you infer that he has been traumatized and that he never really great up because of those traumas, you could feel sorry for him. And the few brief moments when he shows vulnerability are heart-wrenching.

As a side note, I love how the Joker told the first scars story with a very over the top, melo-dramatic air, as if he knew he was lying and making a giant show of telling the "cliche villain backstory." :woot: With the second story about his wife, he actually told it as if it were rooted in real emotion. And of course by the last time he asks the scars question, its already a joke to the audience and Batman can say he really doesn't care - haha. Loved that!

I didn't really feel sorry for the "No... I'm not... No I'm not" part, to me when he said that, he had a look on his eyes and tone in his voice which gave me the impression that he knew he portrays himself as completely insane to escape jail time, and nobody insane would have such a genius plan that he did

i wouldnt say i feel sorry for him, but i would say i admire him and respect him in a twisted sorta way. just think he is the ultimate villain, he just has everything worked out perfectly. he says he doesn't have a plan and that he isnt a schemer but i think that was just to blag harvey dent up. look at the chase scene, he knew exactly where the truck was gonna come out into the open so he had them men ready to bring the chopper down, the bank heist was a work of genius also. but mainly i think all criminals would admire him because he just does what he sets out to do, doesnt think of his safety or others as long as he gets the done. and we all know that even though he got captured he still has won.

Oh hell no...this was one twisted screwball..when Batman was beating his arse in the police witness room,ya kinda was cheering a little inside, every time Batman hit him......:brucebat:

I loved the character. At points I just wanted to be there with him but we all know that would end horribly.

A scene in particular is when he skips down the street after Batman crashes the Batpod.

Another as he is walking out of the hospital in a childish way and is just kinda like "What the hell?"

I just felt attached to the character and the only thing that makes me sad is that I will never get to see the performance portrayed in another movie again and that Heath isn't around to hear his recognition but I'm sure he knows.

The ONLY person I felt sorry for in the movie was the poor sick schizophrenic that Harvey Dent was going to shoot. He was the lunatic the Joker broke out of the insane asylum for the police scene. The guy started crying, and Batman showed up and told Harvey that the guy was completely nuts and didn't know what he was doing. I dunno what that got to me, but it really bothered me thinking that people are like that and really can't help it.

All I can say after my 3rd time seeing the film is that I can say how someone like Harley (if they had put her in the film) could sympathize with him. The biggest moment that most people that are in the same boat as me seem to see is the when the mob calls him "crazy" and he looks legitimately hurt by it.
