To The Princess Hall, Yeah I met them last winter at Norway, I stood in the early line up when Epcot opened and by noon the line up was a huge that stretched all the way to Mexico.

Damn, Norway to Mexico? That is a loooooooooooooooooooooooong line...lol

gee........wonder which princess is more popular in the meet and greets...........

I just wonder what the Elsa actress says when the kids ask her to do her magic.

Another site says an October release for the 3D pack. Looks like this shouldn't be out yet considering it also says that it's made $400 million domestic.

Man, it's tough making sense out of Japanese boxoffice, but no matter how you read the numbers Frozen is opening huge.

For whatever reason, Japanese count weekends as only Saturday and Sunday, that's partly why movies opening over 10m are so rare, they only have 2 day weekends.
Frozen is a bit of an anomaly by opening on a Friday, and to make matters even more confusing the Friday it opened falls on some kind of monthly discount day, where tickets are 40% off.
All that being said, even with the discounted tickets Friday estimates are 2.5-3m and admissions for Saturday are going to be higher than Friday (and these will be full price tickets) and from what I gather Sundays are bigger in Japan than Saturdays.
Right now the floor for the 2 day weekend seems to be 8m, with 10m still in play. Definitely over 10m counting Friday. We could definitely be looking at 100m+ for Japan.

Japan is certainly different to track than any other market, I've never really had a reason to follow Japan boxoffice before. Some early Sunday numbers are trickling in, but for Japan they seem to start with admissions from each separate theater chain rather than all at once, and actual $ amounts come much later. These are early numbers and not final totals, and they are comparing totals from the same time the day before, but they definitely show a trend.

From Toho (largest theater chain):

Yesterday at this time : 29035
Today 38186 (+31.5%)

2nd largest theater chain:

Yesterday at this time: 7241
Today 9120 (+25.9%)

3rd largest theater chain:

Yesterday at this time: 4902

Today 6683 (36.3%)

To put those numbers into perspective, Monsters University had a 12% Sunday increase. MU also opened on the Saturday and didn't have to deal with so much business from opening on a Friday that was also a discounted tickets day which probably held Frozen back a bit, but it's looking like Frozen will still beat MU's 2 day opening 8.4m with a lower 3D share and about 10% fewer screens.
Japan definitely seems to be embracing Frozen in a big way, I think it will beat MU's 91m there.

If Frozen can make more than MU's 91 mil, will it be able to beat CF's WW gross?

Frozen has already blown CF's WW gross out of the water, CF only has $864,031,497 WW, good for 5th best WW total in 2013 behind Iron Man 3, Frozen, Despicable Me 2 and The Hobbit: DOS (in that order).

91m would maybe be good enough to push Frozen to #6 all time WW, it needs 1.124 Billion to pass Transformers: Dark of the moon and should finish just over 1.03 billion not counting Japan.

Yeah, Japanese market is just..different. Out of all of the Asian countries, they tend not to not embrace western-based films as much as the others. Which is surprising due to their strong ties to the west with technology, cars, etc.

I would even say that Japan is in a strange spot right now in their own film industry. Unlike the Koreans or sometimes, the Chinese, hey're completely stagnant, and now they're just remaking live-action version of anime. And in most cases, cheap looking remakes. And nothing they've made in the past ten years has transcended past the Japanese market. If you look at Korea, they have tons.

Ah, okay thanks!

I do think that Japan as a culture has probably been suffering some sort of crisis. However, it looks like Frozen will become a mega hit in their country just like it did for China and South Korea.

Btw, Frozen came in #9 for the week. What an amazing staying power.

who would have that Frozen would have held up so well at this point in release..........

amazing!!

We'll be saying that about it's Japan run in a few months. Japan is the leggiest market there is and even moderately popular movies will play for months.
Monsters University played in Japan for close to 4 months, I expect a similar run for Frozen, which will keep this thread going for the foreseeable future.:woot:
