Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

I believe Feige over Faraci.

That said, it could be a miscommunication: somebody interprets "origin story" as "character spends 75% of the movie on mundane life and angsting about being normal".

Or Feige's information is out of date. The story is that the script has been completely rewritten. Feige was hyping the old script that had an origin story.

Feige always hypes Dr. Stranges origin story as being one of the real cool ones going waaaaay back to last months SDCC interview rounds.

I can see them getting Ethan Hawke as Strange. It'd be reminiscent of RDJ as IM in the sense that Hawke was also big in the 90s and he's been doing smaller projects since. This could totally put him back on the A-list. Hawke would be perfect for this too. Loved him in Sinister.

Hawke is a real indie darling right now, so could be.

Reducing his origin to a brief montage, or flashbacks, is pretty lazy/cheap from a writing perspective. Plus, as others have said, his origin is both awesome and really important to who he is as a character. It'd be like if Iron Man's origin were just a series of flashbacks, or a montage. No, that would have been really dumb. The whole reason why the first movie worked was BECAUSE we got to see his development/growth play out organically over the course of a whole movie. The best part of the first Cap movie was the origin stuff up to and including him getting the SSS, it was fascinating.

How is it lazy and cheap? Like any writing it comes down to inspiration and execution. It's just another narrative device. Doesn't always have to be linear.

I wouldn't mind Ethan Hawke but doesn't Marvel want Strange to be the face of the MCU like Stark was? If so, then does Hawke have the screen charisma of RDJ to captivate audiences? I'm not so sure. Someone like Cumberbatch or Phoenix I could definitely see filling that role.

I wish more comic movies would be "in media res" style. I would be interested in seeing a Dr. Strange done that way.

I agree for the most part (not the lazy and cheap part though), but like I said earlier we really don't need 25 minutes of him at the temple like he was in the animated movie. Just snip that out and jump ahead in time to right before he because the sorcerer supreme.

Hawke would be a great choice.
I could see him doing it because his career has been so weird and erratic the last 5 years. One second he does crappy movies like Getaway or The Purge but then he does great movies like Before Midnight or Boyhood.
And of course he previously starred in Sinister that was directed by Scott Derrickson

He's a real underrated actor. Very versatile.

It was done well in Batman Begins i thought.

I think the only movie that I think the origin story wasnt done well was The Amazing Spider-Man. I mean there have been bad movies that were origin stories, but off the top of my head I can't think of a poorly told origin in terms of structure or whatever.

I never really got why people dont like origin stories. I mean I don't think you need them every time you reboot, but theyre not inherently a bad thing like I've seen some react to them.

We always say this and every time the guy ends up being the dark horse. I suspect if he got the role the fanboy response would range from tepid to enthused. He's not a bad choice but nerds got their own dream choices.

Exactly how would Feige's information be "out of date"? He *runs the operation*. Stuff doesn't happen without his approval.

Strange has one of the best origin stories 616 has to offer. to skip that for whatever reason is beyond stupid. I don't see that.

However, things are also collaborative and people change their minds. When he's speaking of an origin story, he could be trying to hype the current plan. When they change the plan, the fact that he hyped it previously is no longer relevant. That's what I meant by "out of date." His was not a recent quote.

Now if he speaks again about how awesome Dr. Strange's origin is, I think it's safe to say this story is untrue.

Not recent?! it was two weeks ago!

I really hope we do get Strange's origin. I don't normally think it's important to tell EVERY superhero origin story, but I think Strange's in particular makes him more dynamic and relatable as a character, and will give the audience an entry point into the world of magic.

Starting off the movie with him already as Strange would be fine, as long as they do it as sort of a flash forward, like they did with the opening sequence of Iron Man.

"Here's the Sorcerer Supreme. He does majiks, like. And battles insane extra-dimensional threats. The end."

Um, no. Whether it's via flashback or in proper chronological order, there's no way Marvel skips Dr. Strange's origin story. Not only is it simply awesome (as Feige has repeatedly mentioned in interviews), Dr. Strange as a character simply wouldn't work without the context and background that his origin tale offers.

This only ever seems to be a problem with superheroes. Most movies, most stories, don't start at the beginning. We usually find someone who has already went through some kind of character development.

Yeah, but I think that's because it's kind of mandatory, since the character being a superhero is essentially what makes them interesting. If you make a movie about a cop taking down a drug kingpin, you don't need a lot of backstory on the hero. But if you make a movie about a guy with giant dragonfly wings on his back who can shoot fire out of his eyes... it's a good idea to explain that.

If you want any character to be interesting, they'll need backstory, some reason to be the way that they are, but there's more ways to explain it than simply walking them through the story step by step. Plus getting their powers, that's just exposition. That's easy to reveal under almost any circumstance.
