Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 2

Also take in to account Assassin's Creed has no MAJOR box office draws (although the concept of a box office draw is damn near gone)
Chuck knows. :funny:

There are a few box office draws, namely Leo. But yeah, the big box office draws now are brands. AC has actually been fading in the games community for a few years now. Don't know if this was a good idea. If this was a GTA movie, it'd have a way better chance imo.

CGI is never gonna be 100% convincing and I think you gotta take that with some grain of salt. Some CGI is better than others, but even the best are blatantly obvious. If Avatar/Jungle Book is the best CGI there is, and they both still look like cartoon, then you just gotta care a little less about it.

About Warcraft supposedly ripping off LOTR, you can say that about anything. LOTR is such a defining piece of literature (and film) within the fantasy genre, that anything that followed could be described as a rip off. Does that mean there should never be any more fantasy films?

I just think you're being a little too harsh based on TRAILERS. Maybe we'll agree to disagree. I don't think the WC-trailers have been amazing or anything, but coming down THAT hard on the trailers when garbage like the new Ghost Busters trailer exists is just weird.

Yeah I havent heard anyone be pumped up for an Assassin's Creed game in a while. They diluted the brand by releasing a new game every year.

I feel that with a lot of video game movies. They've waited to long to make them. For example with Warcraft, if this was around 10 years ago when there were Warcraft commercials on TV, South Park had that ep and everything I would think there would be way more hype than there is even with the result we're getting from the trailers

Yeah they're too slow in general with videogame-movies. They need to strike where the iron is hot right now. Make a Borderlands movie NOW. Make a Fallout movie NOW. It feels like the people making decisions are horribly out of date and talk about big titles from the past like as if they are still iconic and relevant today. Frankly I'm surprised they haven't shoved out a Half-Life movie yet.

Oh, so you didn't go and see the Jungle Book. That makes sense. It is the living, breathing proof of the progression in CGI. There is plenty of convincing CGI. TFA is full of it. Fury Road has plenty. Tron Legacy, Star Trek 09, Jurassic World, and even T2 25 years ago.

Having new fantasy films are great. But that is the point, new. Harry Potter borrows plenty from Star Wars and Tolkien, but it also brought plenty of new to the table. It was a unique take. GoT is on television, but is another example of borrowing from fantasy from the past, including Tolkien, and doing something new. Just because they could make a movie out of a cliched game series, doesn't mean it was a good idea.

Ghostbusters looking like crap, does not make this look any less mundane and boring.

Fallout, like Elder Scrolls, is a bit different. It is a legacy thing, so every time a new one comes around they are big. Borderlands is actually a good example of something that had its time in the sun and now looks to have faded.

Yeah I don't think Borderlands is that hot right now either.

Idk though. Im not big in gaming anymore and neither are 99% of my friends so I don't know what the new popular game is.

they need to get uncharted movie out within the next 2-3 years since Uncharted 4:A Thief's End is the final game in the franchise and it comes out in 2 weeks

They announced Borderlands 3 is in the works. Will be interesting to see if it can hold up to the quality of what they have delivered before. I think Borderlands should be a given because Mad Max was such a success and Borderlands kinda has a similar feel. It's not AS waste land-y, but still has some of that feeling, and the popularity is pretty much as big as it will ever be. Problem is a movie won't come out until 2-3 years after being greenlit, so you really gotta move fast, on any property.

Fallout also has that post-apocalyptic feel to it and the setting could make for an interesting movie. I haven't played the 4th, but the reviews were great and the franchise is popular. I think Fallout could work, at least moreso than The Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, which I think (to your point about Warcraft) would feel more "been there seen that".

"Final game"

They'll be back :o

Although I think UC4 will be the last chronologically; i think they'll still make Uncharted games

I haven't seen Jungle Book yet. I want to, but it's not a priority and between having limited cashflow at the moment, and being between big releases like BvS, Civil War, X-Men & Warcraft (all movies I've been excited about for longer) I don't think I'll get to see it in the cinema, and it will have to wait for home video.

I didn't mean any offense with the "CGI will never be 100% convincing" part. I think some CGI can be pretty convincing, Fury Road like you mentioned used it really well, but with Jungle Book, at least from the trailers, it feels CGI-y. Good CGI-y, but CGI never the less. I'm still excited to see it, and I don't put that much weight on the CGI vs the actual movie. If there is a great plot with engaging characters and a story I'm into, then CGI is like the cherry on the top. I think that's really my general stance on it. If Warcraft is a good movie, then the CGI not being Jungle Book quality won't bother me. What will bother me is if the movie itself (plot, characters, structure, filmmaking in general) is a disappointment.

A list of fantasy series that don't rip off LOTR: The Black Company, the Elric Saga, The Broken Empire, The Red Queen's War, the Malazan Book of the Fallen, A Song of Ice and Fire, the Farseer Trilogy, A Land Fit for Heroes trilogy.

Speaking of The Elder Scrolls, its lore was (until Oblivion and Skyrim) rather unique and not derivative of Tolkien and other high fantasy. Morrowind, in particular, played with so many genres so well. On one hand, the main quest really riffed on Dances with Wolves-style white guilt fantasies. Then, Oblivion and Skyrim really started dumbing down the lore in their bid for a bigger audience and wider acceptance.

Uhh, whoever mentioned Jurassic World as having convincing CGI should stop talking about "convincing CGI".

The Indominus rex is fantastic, and looks far better then anything in this movie.

Nothing about Jurassic World looked fantastic or good.

Well that is just flat out wrong. And I am one who thought the overuse of blue was a real problem.

Yeah, Jurassic World looked a hell of a lot better than this does. Anyone born with eyes can see that.

Not even. The unfortunate thing about JW is that even with its CGI fixed in the theatrical cut, several scenes seemed to slip through that crack of poorly rendered worse than what was shown in the trailer. It had its moments, but please stick to more consistent examples.

Have you seen the trailers for Warcraft?

Have you seen Jurassic World's petting zoo or those raptor heads behind bars next to Chris Pratt?

Aside from that freaky as heck as baby, none of the orcs look any worse than Hulk does now.

I liked how Jurassic World looked, but I remember people complaining about the CGI in the trailers for that movie. It will always look better on the big screen when the final product is 100% done.

None of them look close to how good Hulk looks. JW has some rough CGI, but on the whole is miles better then this. It also has some of the most impressive CGI ever put on film.

I just watched an hour of JW with my baby (4 year old nephew). Not everything in JW looked amazing but it looks better than what Warcraft has shown us so far.

"beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and these platitudes are getting stale, til next time.
