I read on the Boxoffice forums that AOU had another huge drop in China today. I don"t think $1.5-1.6 billion is a lock.

I'd find the lack of attention paid to the subtitles a bit offensive if I was a fan based in China. That could affect word of mouth and there's no excuse for it.

Not surprising. This movie opened on a Tuesday in China. Everyone rushed out to see it on opening night of course (finished with the 2nd highest opening day of all time in China after Furious 7) and the numbers are naturally decreasing at a heavy rate as the week goes on and people have obligations to fulfill like most of us (work, school etc.).

It'll be interesting to see just how much the numbers spike up again on the weekend. If they don't go up that much, THEN we'll know the film isn't getting positively received over there (the subtitles aren't helping) and that it's likely not going to do very well box office wise.

It will do huge numbers over the weekend in China...No worries..
I think many critics of the movie hope it bombs, but Its not going to happen..
The subtitle issue makes a nice headline grabber for a slow news day but I doubt its as bad as they would like to portray it...
Hell I have a hard time remembering word for word what was said on screen at times after watching AOU because I was too caught up in the non stop action..so I take the recent articles with a grain of salt...
Its going to do great this weekend....
And here in the states it about ready to leave FF7 in the dust..{forgive my pun. }

Why should it be bad at all though? Translating between the 2 languages is not all that difficult for people who do it for a living. And this is one of the biggest entertainment products on the planet. t:

One example of a subtitle flub is when Captain America is addressing the rest of the Avengers during the final battle and says "If you get killed....walk it off." The subtitle read something like "If someone tries to kill you, run away fast."

This example in particular is crucial because the Chinese viewers could possibly get a totally wrong idea of the character and the messages the movie is sending in particular. I don't think it's a huge deal - the Chinese audience is undoubtedly being made aware that the subtitles aren't accurate at all and not to hold it against the movie - but it definitely has the potential to affect business.

Seems like the translator did tranlsate the literal "if you get killed, run it off", and either did not understand the word play or thought the audience wouldnt and just went for simple, straightforward logic.

In the spanish version of Tim Burtons Batman, the Joker is talking to Vicky Vale and tells her "We are like the beauty and the beast... but if anyone else calls YOU Beast... i´ll kill him!" A tipical Joker pun, but somehow the translator didnt get it or thought it was confusing or something and the translation was "We are like the beauty and the Beast. But if someone calls ME Beast... i´ll kill him."

It happens. And if it happens in Spain, one of the best in the dub/sub business since the 1940s, imagine in countries were there is far less experience in play.

On the other hand, you can translate a latin text correctly in several ways and yet you end up saying something completely different to what the author wrote. You can get a text that talks about crops in winter and translate it as a text on the beauty of spring and you did NOTHING wrong. Translation is far more tricksy than people think, between very different languages, the moreso.

I am sure the translations were not perfect in the First Avengers movie as well as in FF7, just saying the news is a bit embellished to grab readers attention..
I felt the quote of certain people coming out in tears due to the error to be a bit over the top..
Drama Queens and attention seekers me thinks....

Imagine if the MCU & DC films were Chinese films being translated to English and they came back with mistranslations so that the jokes never worked or if the Joker lines from TDK got muddled up. It would ruin the films for me too, even if the visuals are obviously just as good. The non-English speaking audience around the world deserves the same quality of product especially as time goes on and they contibute ever increasing amounts to the worldwide gross. I'm sure they wouldn't be as bothered if it's just another film to them but for those who are watching a favourite it's quite easy to see why they'd be disappointed.

Thursday estimates from EntGroup China show Ultron dipping another 25% for an estimated $15 million and a $69.31 million 3-day cume.

Wed -23m (-33.4%)
Thurs - 16m (-32.2%)

Vs 34m - 20m - 15m for AoU

I work with a Chinese man, his understanding is that many people didn't like the movie because it was just too boring. Not too many epic action sequences, which is why F7 and Transformers do so good there, because of the OTT action.

Why should it be bad at all though? Translating between the 2 languages is not all that difficult for people who do it for a living. And this is one of the biggest entertainment products on the planet. t:

Yeah, I know tons of college kids that could do this just for extra credit, and not screw up.

I could see how the Hawkeye family scenes could have lost some people. Especially if there were poor subtitles.

Yeah, but we're talking about the only few such scenes in the movie. It's not like the movie had an overabundance of those scenes. Take out those scenes and the film is basically action from start to finish. Is that what the Chinese want? Power to them, I just know that I prefer to have scenes like that which can ground the whole thing.

It opened on a Tuesday in china for goodness sake, and it still had a record opening....Its not even had its first full weekend yet and people are already calling it a failure.. WTF? ....
No evidence whatsoever to back this up..
The vast majority of the audience have not even had a chance to see it yet..
So how can a story of a guy who knows a guy who is a friend of a guy who's girlfriend told him she heard from another guy who said the movie was boring possibly hold any weight.....
Just wait till Mondays Numbers come rolling in....

But didn't Avengers 2 have a much higher rate of action? I mean, Transformers 4 had long moments of "day to day life", i felt like Avengers 2 was a long ride, as you pretty much start in the middle of an attack against hydra, then a bit of the Avengers chilling, which is interrupted by more action, then the action gets bigger and bigger until culminating in Hulk vs Hulkbuster, which was gigantic. There's a slight moment of pause then, but it doesn't pass all that much time before yet another big set piece.

I don't think anyone is overreacting here. I was responding to the comment made about AoU not having enough action specifically, nothing to do with the box office. I know perfectly well that the movie will take in a lot of money in China.

The high water mark for the MCU in China is Iron Man 2 with 120M, so if it surpasses that it's a success. Throw FF7 out for a moment, the previous record holder was Transformers 4, and that movie sucks. A1 only made 86M in China. I know we are hoping that there is a major boom for this film but it may not happen.
