But sequels are usually expected to make more than the original.

Only if you don't realize that that happens about half the time, usually when the original wasn't a record breaking smash in theaters.

I remember saying that this would be an Empire Strikes Back situation, and it is.

This situation is just a reminder that people don't pay attention to history or previous trends. I can't ever recall a giant, record setting blockbuster with a sequel that made as much, or more than the initial record breaker.

Yeah that one is going to kill for sure. I'm somewhat reserved on giving a definite number, because there's so much unknown. Not sure if it will take Avatar though, because Avatar was revolutionary in film making, and SW will be a great fan event, but it won't be that like the original SW was.
Nah, I am playing. I don't think it will challenge Avatar, though I'd love it. I think we could see anything from $1.5bil to $2bil. The overseas take is the big question imo. I think it will do fantastic domestically. I almost feel like $500m is a certainty.

I wouldn't be surprised if both Pitch Perfect and Mad Max did take advantage, assuming the film doesn't explode and do better than expected. Don't get me wrong 77-80mil is an amazing second weekend number but it's not to the same level as the first one which leaves money on the table for it's 3rd weekend.
Yeah, it is great. But it makes me think people are more then willing to see something else next weekend.

Eh. Maybe.

Over saturation of the the team-ups could make the rush factor go down.

It could possibly make the situation worse. If CW comes across as an Avengers lite then when Infinity War 1 comes, will just be the 4th Avengers movie.(Plus not featuring the main Avengers team.)
I am curious about the reception and how much it affects the film's box office total. If Civil War is far more well received then AoU, will that make a difference.

I think Civil War will accomplish a few things: it'll give us something fresh in the MCU, it'll set the stage for the team's status before Infinity War, and it will firmly separate the original Avengers team, allowing Infinity War to draw people in with their reunion.

^^ Im curious about 2 things. How will Cap 3 Civil War perform. It will do Cap or Avengers numbers ?

And will it outgross BvS Dawn Of Justice ?

Anyways cant wait for 2016. Two assemble movies in just 2 months. EPIC.

Infinity War, JL Part One and whatever that X-Men/FF nonsense is will all "suffer" if AoU is an indication of anything moving forward.

Which it isn't.

But yes, they are all following the exact same formula that has somewhat, supposedly or definitely died down. Given the predictions prior [to AoU] and currently with BvS, I am most certainly not looking forward to Infinity War/JL discussions.

I hope Civil War makes at least $400m. Beyond that I don't really have much of a clue as to how it will do domestically.

What trend? The fact that it's still likely the highest grossing film this summer?

This is what usually happens to a film after a record setting film. Empire lower than Star Wars, Spider-man 2 lower than Spider-man, TDKR less than TDK.

There are numerous factors involved, but it wasn't in the cards for AoU. I don't see people growing tired of these films, and even if it only finishes at 450M that's 100M more domestically than any film released in 2014.

Thank you. One of the biggest movies of the summer, of the year, and possibly of all time and a small group of people act as though the numbers are anything less than great...:loco:

Looks like the total domestic gross will tamper out around $450M. That's not a really small amount but I think marvel movies will be a tad disappointed.

I said it before....but there is just not much reason to re-watch this movie in theatres. I saw the avengers 3 times as I loved the third act so much.

AOU overtaking Furious 7 WW for the year isn't a lock.

I think with the introduction of Spider-Man, CW makes a lot more than WS but I think it will be crushed by BvS.

All depends on China.

The film is a massive hit. I think you'd be living in denial to argue Marvel wasn't expecting or wanting bigger numbers in terms of the opening and second weekend , regardless of precedent. That said, the film is a huge success by any count .

Yeah, I have a hard time getting upset that AoU will "only" be the second most-successful MCU film.

Yeah, it's a major hit, but i can't say i'm not a bit disappointed with it not performing higher right now, expecialy considering how well something like Furious 7 is doing, and how it may even beat both Avengers films, but then again, i don't have much knowledge of box office results, so i may be completely wrong here.

Don't be too disappointed. I still think it comes down to that AOU was a crappy movie. I'm in the same boat. Saw it once, don't feel like I have to see it again. However, last year, I saw Cap 2 and GOTG 3 times each, simply because those movies were very good! It all comes down to quality and character development. Cap2 and GOTG had that in spades, IMO, AOU did not, or it tried, but fell flat. Only good thing that came out of it was Scarlet Witch. Again, this is my opinion. I'm know the majority on here loved Vision, I on the other hand, didn't care for the dude.

Not for nothing, but both weekends it was out it had some competition granted not from other movies but other events in general. Opening weekend had some pretty big competition from the world of sports and the second was graduation weekend for many colleges and of course mother's day. Im not sure how much of a difference this actually makes, but I mean it could have been a factor.

Furious 7 making over a billion is the same reason the Batman franchise went from 400 WW with BB to over a billion with TDK.

So, what are you saying? That Disney/Marvel might put out a hit on Chris Evans or Josh Brolin by the time Infinity Wars part 2 comes out?

I guess its a disappointment to anyone who thought it would rake in bigger numbers than its predecessor. Its on pace to finish right around what I predicted it would in WW numbers. The only thing I expected was a higher OW at least over 200 mil. But I knew the drops would be significant because it simply wasn't going to have legs like the first film. Still a huge success for Marvel.

Also with Titanic they apparently murdered all the extras after filming. Solid box office tactic
