EVERYTHING Black Panther - Part 3

This isn't much of a surprise. They've been talking about BP for years, and Stan Lee has said that they're developing a BP movie.

Stan Lee saying that doesn't mean much. The head of marvel studios saying it has a little more weight. But "in development" and "someday" are still pretty vague terms.

It's likely going to happen because I don't know if Marvel can take the heat for not having a Black Superhero character lead a film. They are already taking some heat for lack of diversity on the Avengers.

It would also give DC a chance to change Green Lantern from Hal Jordan to John Stewart and beat Marvel to it.

Despite the mild vagueness, woo hoo!

<insert happy dance here>

They're also taking heat for the lack of female-led superhero films. I don't know how much that stuff plays into their decision making. I think that it's quite possible that Falcon will be in AOU.

I took "someday" to mean "I can't give you a date until the film is officially announced."

The difference is that Black Panther has been a film everyone has been asking for, but when it comes to a female led superhero film, who do people want to see? Ms. Marvel? Black Widow? It's a bit more difficult to pull off, not because the character's are female, but because those characters have a less material to pull from.

Now they need this guy to play T'Challa:

I remain firmly on this bandwagon!

Sign him up quick. Dude's price tag is about to spike real quick after awards season next year.

Quoted for truth!

I'm also a little low on optimism. To me, this means the film is most likely going to be in Phase 4, when they're opening new properties more than juggling established ones. They're going to want to finish Thor, Cap, maybe even Hulk and GOTG and Feige is pressing, pressing for Dr. Strange which he feels is "new and fresh." Other than that? Everything else is a someday project. Things like Inhumans and Black Panther are further up on the list than anything else, but... yeah, they're developing it for the future, not the near future.

What I do know is that when they do get to it, they'll do it right.

This. They will do Wakanda right. I don't know how they are going to do the major cities or whether they look like Cape Town, Johannesburg or even cities more advanced than that such as Singapore, Dubai or Doha.

If the film shows the capital of Wakanda as "The Singapore of Africa" it could portray the continent in a bright light.

I don't really know much about Wakanda in regards to demographics. Is it like a majority of Africa where the population is largely black or is it like South Africa, where there is a large minority white population?

Wakanda is all black. It's never been conquered, and it doesn't allow for immigrants. There's one white guy there who is T'Challa's stepbrother, but that's only because his deceased parents crash landed with him as a baby on a plane in Wakandan soil. Even then he's kinda evil since he'll do a lot of crazy things in the name of protecting the Black Panther.

That would probably mean that Wakanda is going to be CGI if the filming takes place in South Africa or London.

If Marvel wants to cast a younger BP, Charles Michael Davis would be a pretty good choice. He's been pretty great in the Originals, he has the right physique as well.

Saw Chiwetel on Daily Show for TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE. Good Zod, Marvel... Snatch him up now and get to work on a script!!! In some ways, at the proper angles he even looked like JRJR's T'Challa.

Asgard was all white too. The comics are used as inspiration. Not a rule book. Don't be surprised to see Wakanda become a fusion of lots of races.

Asgard had an Asian in the comics, right?

So there's some precedent for racial diversity in Asgard which is different from a nation on Earth notorious for xenophobia.

I don't say this often but the Serenity/12 Years A Slave dude (didn't feel like copying and pasting his name) was BORN to play Black Panther.

- African father
- Martial arts expert
- potential Oscar candidate
- work history with Joss Whedon
- can easily play a regal yet noble king

If he were cast it would be near RDJ perfection.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is from years ago, too.

Serentiy and Red Belt were what made me go, "This is the guy." To have him possibly win an Oscar for Mcqueen's film would be the icing on the cake. Has he ever even been publicly asked about this at all?

Not just his father...both parents are Nigerian.

I'm not sure how much of an expert he is...he said in an interview that he had no martial arts training prior to Redbelt, and I can't say for certain that he stuck with it afterwards. (If he did, all the better!) But, being the type of actor he is, I'd trust him to commit to the role, and not only develop the skills to make his performance look believable, but to sculpt his body well enough to look like the warrior that the Black Panther is.

And yes, he absolutely exudes the nobility and dignity required to play the King of Wakanda!

Wow, he'd actually want to do it!? :wow:

That surprised me. Ejiofor always struck me as a guy who preferred character roles to blockbuster popcorn fare.

He's still not my personal favorite for the role, that is still Tongayi Chirisa. But I know Ejiofor is the most realistic choice at this point and well, with this news, there's no reason for it not to happen. He said the big cheese hadn't called? Dial him up Feige. Get it done!
