Some people take personal offense at criticism for things they enjoy. Sports teams, movies, TV shows, etc. They become offended as if you insulted them directly. Then there are some people who just like everything. Every movie is a 10/10, every TV show is must-see viewing, everything is awesome. Then there are the people who fit in the cross section where the two above venn diagrams meet. People are free to enjoy what they want, and believe what they want, but that last group can get... exhausting.

Relying solely on reviews to determine the quality of a film is pointless, and any site that tracks reviews and uses them to determine a film's quality is also pointless and therefore meaningless.

The quality of a film is not determined by whether or not it's reviewed well and never should be.
The entire question here is critical consensus. But come on, tell me what determines the consensus view on a film? Do you want to go with box office?

The answer cannot be personal preference here, as we are talking consensus.

Lets get this thing back on track, shall we?

Who else is excited for Blogtor Doom? I'm a big Toby Kebbell fan!

Reviews, if correct and objective (and there is no ground to doubt the quality of the reviews) are a perfect, and dare say the only, way to determine a film quality.

What other factor would you take into account? Box office take? your personal opinion? subjective view from a fan? Some formula factoring lenght, budget, awards?

I liked the voice he used in the trailer. That seemed appropriately threatening. Where the rest of it goes, I don't know, but.... cool voice?

I don't personally believe that the idea of "critical consensus" means anything. I also don't believe that critical reviews in and of themselves mean anything.

Note: The reason that I hold these viewpoints is that I've been burned by basing my decision-making on reviews in the past.... a case in point being the video game Odin Sphere, which received a 9.5 review score on IGN but which turned out to be pointless, repetitive, and frustratingly stupid when I actually played it.

Lack of Razzies nominations.

Then what is your methodology?

Whatever suits his argument at that given moment.

Seriously people, please stop giving that guy attention. He's proven himself obtuse at best and intellectually dishonest at worst. Don't engage him and he'll fade back into obscurity soon enough.

Then what is your methodology?

1) Looking up information about the film (such as a synopsis, trailer, etc) and determining whether or not I'm interested in what I see/read

2) Seeing the film myself (if I'm interested in it)

3) Judging the film based on its content

I pose the question, again, why you believe that studio execs would set this embargo if they were confident in the product? I'm genuinely fascinated to know.

So pre-released material has a determination of the quality of a film? Does this not show an obvious inherent bias towards a film? :funny:

Also, no one was talking about your personal evaluation of a film. We were all talking about a consensus view.

Judging a film based on its content is a review. By your standards, that's no measure of quality

Probably the same exec that had to go down to Baton Rouge and personally clean up Tranq's mess. CONFIDENCE! :o

I don't read reviews of something in order to determine its quality. I form my own judgments of something based on the thing itself, not on what someone thought about it.

I hope The Hollywood Reporter has a followup to their Trank/Star Wars article exposing everything about this crazy production.

If this film turned out bad, I'd expect Teller & Mara to do most of the talking. Maybe Kinberg, but then he'd be backtracking.
