There are still classic members of the Defenders like Nighthawk, Valkyrie and Hellcat who are far more associated with the team than DD, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and especially Jessica Jones. If those three were there for the small screen Defenders, then even if they don't have the likes of Hulk, Dr Strange, Namor or Silver Surfer, then it would still seem more like the comic book Defenders. And having DD and Luke Cage there would be more like those issues where those two did appear.
As for an extra team, well are you saying that if Marvel had the rights to the Fantastic Four, that they also wouldn't be needed because they already have the Avengers? Or maybe they'll just end up as Avengers themselves and not a separate family of four because everything has to fall under this Avengers umbrella?
Think of it in terms of branding - Marvel's big screen earth-based superhero team up films will likely always be named "The Avengers", regardless of the lineup (a family-based, exploratory team like the FF is in a different category). That's Marvel's biggest brand right now, bigger even than Spidey, so even if a future film installment puts the Surfer, Namor, the Hulk and Dr. Strange together they would carry The Avengers banner as well.
So Marvel's Defenders banner is available for use on its TV based street-level heroes, which ties into its 616 Universe and creates an interesting contrast with the big screen superhero brand. It's inconsistent with the comics version, but rolls off the tongue better than either Heroes for Hire or Marvel Knights. It also opens up the possibility that a Defenders team may make a big screen appearance after the miniseries, and Strange and Banner would be strong candidates to make an appearance if that were to happen.
