Why Storm? I'll give you two very good reasons why:
(1) Storm was once a thief as well. She and Gambit relate because she understands the thief lifestyle.
(2) Storm is calm and stoic. She is also a seasoned, veteran X-man. She is much more likely to convince someone to join the X-men than hotheaded Rogue.

Storm was actually the first member of the X-Men Gambit met in the comics.

I don't agree. This movie has enough in it that they simply don't need Rogue. Besides, I don't think it's a good idea to stick your newest it-character with a girlfriend right out the gate. People only care about relationships when you develop the characters in such a way that they become emotionally invested in them. How good is the emotional investment going to be if you stick him with Rogue basically from the moment he is introduced?

Okay. They are both Southern. And...? That still doesn't explain why Xavier would pick Rogue and not someone else.

It really isn't. As I've asked before: why Rogue and not Storm? Storm (if you must have an X cameo) would make a heck of a lot more sense while also paying homage to Gambit's comic origins with the X-men. People only want it to be a no-brainer because they are desperate to see Romy onscreen. And, while fun, Romy just doesn't make sense in a Gambit origin story.
It's not like Rogue is even a hot head in the film universe anyway. And if this is set today Rogue also has been a member of the X-Men for a long time. Professor X can send Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, Rogue, Kitty anyone he thinks could help the mutant and recruit them. Sure Storm would be great. I'm not saying it isn't a fantastic idea but why not kill two birds with one stone? Is it so wrong for us fans want to see the two of them on screen together? Not only that but get to see Rogue done justice.

Deadpool isn't meant to be taken seriously. It doesn't matter nearly as much if a character is shoehorned in as getting some laughs is more important than the plot.

Aside from Deadpool, including characters in small roles for marketing purposes and world building has nearly always backfired for the X-Men franchise. They just serve as a distraction and fans get pissed off over some heavily hyped character being little more than a cameo.

Deadpool also completely reworked Colussus. We finally got a proper Colossus. Not the crappy Daniel Cudmore version. Whenever they do Rogue, whether with Gambit or some other film, that's the type of re-invention the character needs. New look, new attitude, new actor, the whole shebang.
It was barely an actor seeing as how they had a mocap guy and then another guy do the voice. Colossus was cool in Deadpool but if they want to use him properly again they'll have to cast an actual actor or go back to using Cudmore. They don't need a whole new actress especially because they had a very well known actress in the role. The future is a whole new slate they can easily have Anna play a more refined bad ass Rogue.

When we already saw that present day Rogue is being played by Anna Paquin, I don't see why that should change in Gambit. Daniel Cudmore only didn't appear in Deadpool because he turned down the role not because he just stood there most of the time in his 3 previous X-Men movies.

IMO, its just someone's disliking of Anna Paquin playing Rogue which is understandable but continuity-wise, Anna Paquin should be the one playing Rogue if Rogue ever shows up in Gambit. If Rogue appears to be the weak Rogue that can't punch and kick, its probably because the writer wrote it that way. Or unless Anna Paquin gets busy filming another project again.

Daniel cudmore turned it down because it was gonna be all mo cap and it wasn't gonna be his voice so really it would have almost been like he wasn't there at all

I agree that Rogue needs to be done justice. And I would love to see Rogue and Gambit onscreen. Just not in what is supposed to be a SOLO movie about Gambit's origin.

Agreed! Let's establish Gambit as an individual first. Their relationship has become stale anyway. Rogue would need a whole new personality, if Remy's gonna fall for her because Anna paquin's Rogue is not Rogue at all. I'd like to see different actress as well, if this ever happens. I'm all for the Storm/Gambit friendship though, assuming they finally write Storm right.

I could see Storm being in New Orleans and Gambit trying to rob her only to fail spectacularly given Storm's own past as a thief. Hell, from there we could get a film about Storm and Gambit calming the Assassin's Guild while fighting Mr. Sinister's Marauders - assuming as Kinberg said that Essex Corporation will play a role in this film.

Just like X-Men Origins was about Wolverine? :o

They didn't make that mistake with The wolverine :oldrazz:, jackman has said he felt the problem with Origins is it felt like X-Men 4 and not a Wolverine movie.

I still find it funny actually in Origins how wolverine was the center guy in the Team X shots like when you see the team walking towards their target wolverine is upfront center like he is the leader or about to do something... and he did nothing at all but stand there.

Is there an appreciable difference between those two things? :oldrazz:

Gambit is a better thief than Storm. I can't see that happening. And if Storm appeared, I would prefer to see it later down the line as she tries to recruit him as an X-man or something of that nature. I think the mutant thief angle is very unique and something that we haven't seen in the movieverse thus far. No need to clutter that.

True, Storm didn't seem to be a very good thief in Apocalypse. Now that I think of it, though, the best way to integrate the X-Men into Gambit would be say having Gambit try and steal something from the X-Mansion. Say Sinister is manipulating the Assassin's Guild, Gambit goes against that and is forced to try and steal say the plans to Cerebro. That's the best way it could work and due to that, Gambit might need to see only one if any of the X-Men.

why do people want to stick Storm in everything?

Probably because they couldn't get enough from Storm in the previous movies.

Because Storm is such a great character if done right. Her relationship with Gambit is very interesting and she is the first x-man to come in contact with him. So why not?

outside of being his vehicle to get onto the team in the very beginning, I never really saw them as having much of a great relationship. Its defnitely not something that other writers outside of Claremont explored much

Probably because they couldn't get enough from Storm in the previous movies.

I get that but it seems everytime there's an X-men project, people want to shoehorn her in

I wrote back in 2014 how they should have teamed Gambit and Ororo up in Apocalypse. Here's what I wrote:

"Personally (and I've written this elsewhere) I would love to see the movie start off first with stuff back in ancient Egypt, showing us Apocalypse as a youth and then him finding alien technology. He creates his pyramids (in Giza) to hide the ship.

We then see a scene from 1976 where we see Raven give Wolverine's body to Sinister. We see that she did this in order to get something that has to do with saving/protecting mutants. Maybe the location of Destiny!

We then see a Danger Room sequence with Jean and Scott, and possibly a Quicksilver, already recruited. Have Beast running it and have it explained generally how Beast created the Danger Room and created Scott's glasses. Show each of their personalities. Scott's natural leadership, Jean's uncertainty (possibly) and maybe Quicksilver's overconfidence.

We then see Xavier using Cerebro, and see him find another mutant (Nightcrawler) in Germany (at the circus). We see that he is bald (pay McAvoy extra). They go to recruit him.

We then see Gambit in Cairo and a scene where a young Ororo tries to steal from him. Doesn't work out as she expects, but Gambit uses his powers to Ororo's astonishment.

Back with Xavier and the X-Men we see them visit the circus. Something happens, young Nightcrawler exposes his powers, he decides to go with Xavier. We even get to see (from Margali's point of view) how Kurt came to be raised by her (Mystique left him).

We then see Gambit (in uniform) entering the pyramid. Storm follows him in. Her presence (which obviously didn't happen in the OT for whatever reason) leads to a slumbering Apocalypse being awoken. Gambit tries to save Ororo and escape and causes a cave-in, killing a Horseman (Death) but trapping Ororo.

Back on the Blackbird we see Xavier (and maybe Jean) react to Apocalypse's energy. They head to Cairo.

Back with Ororo, she freaks out and her powers cause lightning to blast the pyramid. The X-Men appear, a short battle with the remaining Horsemen, they have to escape since Ororo is hurt. Gambit goes with them.

We see Apocalypse visiting Sinister (Sinister is obviously subserviant - they must have met in the past) and him needing a new Horseman Death. Wolverine's body is presented and we see the start of him being turned into a Horseman.

We then see Mystique and her Brotherhood (Toad, Spyke, Ink, and maybe a better done Blob) attacking a government facility. They get to the point where they free Destiny, but they are trapped. Possibly Ink or Spyke are killed. Magneto shows up out of knowhere to save them.

Back at the X-Mansion we see Ororo being tended to and Gambit by her side. They discuss this whole omnipotent being they met and question Gambit. He provides just a bit of insight (would Xavier use his powers to uncover the truth?, could Gambit prevent it?).

Then at Magneto's lair (within a mountain) he reveals to Raven some truths about the past, as does she. She gets into the whole "you left me" and "you tried to kill me" stuff. Erik explains how he is going to create a free society for mutants. Mystique doesn't comit to anything. Maybe Destiny convinces Raven that Xavier needs to be told about how she gave Wolverine to Sinister (she sees what he will become). Erik goes with her (and Destiny) to visit Charles (Raven to explain, Erik to invite them to come with him).

We then get to see the whole Wolverine reveal. He is the Horseman Death.

Back at Xavier's Mystique, Erik and Destiny show up and they get into what they know about Wolverine and Sinister, and the coming Apocalypse. Magneto reveals to Quicksilver that "I am your father". Quicksilver goes, but no one else.

Raven and Xavier go through some stuff. They agree to work together for now in order to undo what she did (Wolverine) and stop Apocalypse. Although Kurt isn't informed that Mystique is his mommy, maybe Xavier and she get into it a bit. She convinces Charles not to tell...

Apocalypse and his forces attack somewhere, and the X-Men and Mystique go to stop them. We have a good battle, a few dead Horsemen, Xavier getting through to Wolverine, who turns on his "master", allowing an all out assault to work. Would need some good combos between the X-Men. With Apocalypse defeated the X-Men leave and Mystique goes her own way.

We then get to see Erik, along with a number of followers (maybe around 30 or so) at his base of operations. We see him use his powers to rip the mountain from the Earth and propel it into space. He creates Avalon.

Back at the X-Mansion we get a happy, feel good scene showing the four X-kids and maybe something along the lines of how Gambit is not there, but he's coming back (maybe a conversation between him and Storm). The movie ends with some discussion about Erik and how the governments of the world are going to react, and maybe some other stuff. But we get to see all four of the X-Kids happy and healthy, etc.

After credits scene: We see Sinister back in Cairo putting the remnants of Apocalypse into the regeneration chanber. Gambit shows up and gives to Sinister whatever it was that he was originially sent to obtain. This way the GA sees that Gambit was working for Sinister and that Apocalypse is a threat that can come back in the future. We also see that Sinister is a future threat that could pop back up in either a future Gambit flick, or in another X-Men movie... "

Man, would have loved to have seen this so much more than the crap we got. Maybe it's too late to team Gambit and Storm as the main draw was doing it in an Apocalypse movie and in Egypt. Guess they could use the Genosha storyline altered a bit. Yeah, that could actually work...

So perhaps Chan and co. really want to keep Liman on the project to the point where they're willing to wait for him if he's picked up that YA novel adaptation. Hopefully the delays just makes the actual film that much better.

gambit is like deadpool used to be.i will believe it when I see it.even though
i want to see gambit.

If gambit actully comes out in 2018 after deadpool sequel gambit could
actully be part of X-force.

So if they film this in spring of 2017 so I guess, its not coming out of 2017 anymore. Oh well. I really hope Doug Liman delivers if he is still directing!

I don't agree with Hugh. Origins didn't look like X-Men 4 to me because despite Cyclops and Xavier showing up at the end, there weren't any X-men around in the film. In fact, it actually felt like a Wolverine movie since most of the film revolved around him fighting wars, fighting Sabertooth, getting his metal claws, and going on his revenge quest. I never got that "X-men 4" vibe from that film.
