Not in the show. He did it with a dagger.
True, thought you meant the books, too.

I didn't even noticed that it was the same sword...
Why would Ned be executed with his own sword ? I don't know Ice story but I thought it was a House or Family sword ( when I saw him used it in the first ep ).

When the Stark men were being killed, they probably took his sword. To pour salt in the wounds, Joffrey had Ilyn use Ice to behead Ned. As it's well-established, Joeffrey, is a little ****.

Yeah, sure. I was talking about the show. No idea what the comic is supposed to be.
Yes. And it was then used by Ser Ilyn to execute Ned.

Ok, the TV show fails to capture the true power of the sword in the story. It's one of those legendary Excalibur type (but without the powers) sword. It was made of Valerian Steel which it their world's version of Damascus Steel or Japanese Tamahagone. Not even the Lannisters posses a sword of this long lost art.

The people of Braavos have the skill to do it (because they represent a kind of Asia) and they had dealings with Winterfell for years.

There is a lot on the sword in there if you look.

Well, Ned's not in much of a position to argue at that point that his Family blade has been taken, is he?

I don't know how much difference a sword can make if they're both of decent quality (I figure the Lannisters would have good quality weapons). The sword is only as good as the user, who's a mortal man.

I don't know what you're going on about. I know all about Ice. I know how important it is, along with the other Valyrian Steel weapons (it is a 'y' and not an 'e', you know, given it was Valyria and not Valeria, which is a female first name - not harping, just pointing out). I know that Ned used and carried it more than was depicted in the show.

But the comic is coming out as a result of the show, and covers of anything are just promo pieces designed to catch the eye of the consumer. Ice wouldn't have fit as the cover is designed, so rather than assume that Alex Ross is a total and stupid git who thinks a greatsword looks like a longsword, I figured it made more sense that the sword comic-cover-porn-moustache-Ned is drawing forth was a longsword - as he commonly carried on the show - and not Ice.

As it's been mentioned, Ice is a sword made from Valyrian Steel, a spell-forged metal that holds it's edge forever. They aren't made anymore so it's very prestigious to have one. The Lannisters may have good weapons, but they don't have a Valyrian Steel one. Even Jeor Mormont had one.

Very true, but even after a few swings against another sword, a shield, or plate armor and a normal sword starts to lose its edge. Fast. Valaryan steel can never be dulled and is always as sharp as the day it was forged. While it's not gonna help them take out 20 dudes against 1, it will help them continue to fight chain after chain after chain of enemy without having to get a new weapon.

I've seen a lot of talk in here about who to cast in new roles in the upcoming seasons. Here's a link to a gallery for suggestions from a favorite site of mine. I've never read the books, and didn't read all the summaries, but there's some interesting actors that they would choose:

Haha, I never thought of Chiklis as Strong Belwas. That'd actually work. I love me some Chiklis. :awesome:

Int4eresting call for Belwas. I always pictured that big fat dude from Hawaii 5-0

David Thewlis for Davos is almost a perfect match

Of course but my question was more about why/how Ice was used to execute him and in my mind Ice was still in Winterfell ( don't ask my why :p )

Well in your mind you should realize that a soldier like Ned is not going to leave his weapon when he essentially moves to another city for work. Did you see the caravan that went to King's Landing, the size of the King and the Lord's retinue? Don't you think they could have packed it if they went as far as bringing wolves, hunting dogs, etc.

disclaimer : my mind is not fully mine when I watch my shows.

Anyway, I didn't thought about all that and Ice doesn't seem to be Ned every day sword or I am mistaken ?

Well, as the Hand Ned didn't need to carry Ice with him all the time, unless he wanted to intimidate other council members.

Btw, it seemed like there was alot of story involving Ned's service during the rebellion war against the Mad King, including what went on between him and Jon Snow's mother. Ned even told Jon that he'll tell him about his mother once they meet up again, but of course they didn't get to meet ever again. Without spoiling me (since I'm still reading the book), do the books ever reveal the truth of Ned's story during the war?

There's a popular theory that, while not explicitly stated, has some strong, convincing evidence. GRRM has said Jon's parents will be revealed.

It is his everyday sword. He wore it with pride, it was also apart of his "office" being the lord of Winterfell he carries his family sword always.

Sure he doesn't need it when he essentially became Prime Minister since he has the protection of the Kings Guard (oh no!), but he did have it on the street in the fight with Jamie.

They don't have to explicitly state that he takes his sword with him, he's a warrior. Richard Rahl, Elric, Conan, etc are always expected to have their weapon on them (though Conan didn't have any specific weapon), it's just accepted as such unless explicitly stated that their weapon was taken.

Slightly spoilerific but a safe answer to your question.
One significant pre-war story in A Storm of Swords told by one of the Reeds and other slight tid bits get dropped here and there from various characters.

Okay thanks for the answer.

a storm of swords, what an epic name.

this show is sneaking up on Spartacus:B&S-GOA in my list

I like the idea of Ygritte being played by Hugh Laurie's niece Rachel Hurd-Wood as I have a crush on her

There's a bit about Ned's life, thoughts, and history that the show misses overall. I wonder if they'll bring Sean Bean back for some flashback cameos in later seasons, but I'm undecided as to if that could work.

There are some potentially significant events that happen via his POV in the novel that do not occur or really get mentioned in the show.

I think the only thing a flashback would make sense for is [blackout]what happened at the Tower of Joy[/blackout]

He could also re-appear in a dream sequence since the show did the dreams Bran and Rickon had of him in the crypt.
