Same place, though the scene was a bit different and at the end of book 2. Also, his return was a secret. He went around as Arstan Whitebeard until Dany found out his identity.

Um how in the world are they going to cover his identity like in the books. Its fine, we shouldnt be complaining about ruining the surprise...It in fact ended with a bang. We saw Khaleesi hyperventilating when Barristan introduced himself. She was like..."I"D HIT IT"

How was it?! Someone break it down for me.

What I meant is they ruined the surprised by putting his leaving scene in the opening recap.

I am fine with him going around without his secret identity, though I think they could have done it rather easily. After all, Dany has no idea who he is, Jorah is easy to blackmail and it would add some nice tension for the audience.

I never pay attention to the recaps, but for the non readers they needed the reminder. So much crap has happened that I'm not sure non readers had even thought about him for a while.

It was a good premiere. Lots of buildup, but that's to be expected. I missed Bran, Arya and Jaime/Brienne storylines, but that's what happens when there are so many characters to follow.

Production values seem a lot higher, but that could be because it's the first new episode.

Tywin sure is an *******.

As for Selmy. Does he really need a secret identity? He's the world's best swordsman, and isn't even in Westeros anymore. No one is going to mess with him, and if they do, he'll just cut them down.

So Selmy is still good? I figured that was more a past reputation. I guess they want to make Tywin less likeable than he was last season; last season he was one of my favorite characters. Now it looks like Joffrey has ONE job: don't screw up Tyrell's strategy to get the lower class's support for his rule.

Well look at the reaction of the other knights when he draws his sword in court. I get the sense that he really could have cut them like carving a cake.

We'll find out soon enough.

If you have dragons, why aren't they always around burning mother ****ers up who are trying to kill you?

Selmy, even in old age, is possibly the best swordsman in Westeros. Even Jaime who is renowned for his skills won't mess with the man. In the books everywhere he goes his reputation precedes him and I expect we will see these skills before too long. The old dog still has plenty of bite.

I was so happy to finally see Barristan again, and was definitely not expecting him to show up at Dany's camp.

Noticed the lack of Arya & Gendry, Bran & Rickon, or Jaime & Brienne, but it looks like we'll see all those threads next week.

Yep. When he says "I could still cut down all of you," as he leaves the King's Guard, he meant it. And he probably could have. What they don't tell you in the series, that they do in the books, is that Joffrey sends a few men after Selmy to have him imprisoned, or killed, because Joffrey was ticked at how Selmy left. Selmy killed the men trying to capture him and escaped Kings Landing.

The old man is straight swagger.

The lack of some of the characters in this episode makes me hope that they have learned their lesson and won't try to cram every single thread and storyline into every episode like last season.

They're going to have to start condensing. Honestly, I hope they combine books 4 and 5 into one season. I think a lot of that material could be cut and streamlined.

I bet they will, because at their core 4&5 are great just need to get the filler out.

But great opening episode. So great to have this show back.

Also totally random, but Sansa is freakishly tall.

They really picked well with the Stark girls. She is growing up to be that stunner she should, while Ayra doesn't seem to be growing all that much at all.

He is the man. Even Jaime isn't stupid enough to think he can handle Selmy.

Yeah they've already said the rest of the seasons will be an adaption of the overall A Song of Ice and Fire story rather than it being one book per season.

Pretty standard premiere for this show. I like the way they handled the Selmy issue and just dropped his "secret identity" altogether. I was wondering if they were gonna try to make him unrecognizable or something. This is definitely better. Still loving those dragons (do I detect another budget increase?).

Mainly, I'm just happy to have this show back.

I think what we saw tonight was what the main storylines are. The ones which will have presence in almost every episode.

Jon, Dany, Rob, and King's Landing as a whole.

They won't do that. What they will do is combine the books (as they occur at the same time), cut a lot of the new characters, give some of their storylines to existing characters, and tell it over two seasons at least.

If he had stuck to the POVs from before and didn't feel the need to add as many as he did, book 4&5 would be one pretty solid novel.

Which is why some stuff will be moved around, pushed up or back.

I'm glad they have Sansa aware that it is Baelish smuggling her out of Kings Landing rather than her dealing with that knight Dontos and then Baelish stepping out of the shadows at the end of the season as the mastermind. This way is much more to the point and concise and it gives sansa time to grow and gain chemistry with baelish for what is ahead.

Better then inventing annoying stuff for him to do. How his trip to see Cat last season didn't end in his death or at least capture is still a mystery to me.
