One other thing... the Night's Watch dude who killed Ser Daughterf**ker... was he Daggett's right hand man in TDKR?

Yeah that was Burn Gorman. He also had a recurring role on Revenge this season. lol He's everywhere.

So basically, this guy just freed Theon and killed some guys so that he could bring him back and make himself look like a hero? Is that what is going on here or am I missing something?

psychotic

That's the key word here.

Yes.

Heh, yeah... I did a little research and learned a bit more about him. I only just started the second book of the series, so I need to catch up to the show.

"the guy" also learned that the Stark boys are still alive, all of his plan was to get intelligence from Lamo Theon.
I think.

I know that you did your research, but just pretend that you didn't research outside of the show. If you just go by the show, here are some of tidbits that may clear up the confusion, especially if you rewatch the seasons:

Season 2 Episode 6 - Roose Bolton says "Let me send word to my bastard at the Dreadfort. He can raise a few 100 men and retake Winterfell before the new moon. My boy would be honoured to bring you Theon's head."

Robb says "Theon, I want him brought to me alive."

Season 2 Episode 8 - Robb tells Roose Bolton "Any Ironborn who surrender will be allowed to return safely to their homes. Any Ironbord with the exception of Theon Greyjoy."

Season 2 Episode 10 - Theon is surrounded and his own Ironborn men knock him out and take him. The main Ironborn guy, Dagmer, says "Let's go home".

Season 3 Episode 2 - Theon is tied to an X-shaped thing and tortured with questions and stuff. The boy who's sweeping tells him that he'll free him.

When Robb is arguing with Karstark, you can see the Bolton's sigil (flag) with the Flayed Man, which resembles an X - just like that X-shaped thing that Theon's tied to. When the Bolton men find Jaime and Brienne and ride towards them, you can see those sigils again.

Season 3 Episode 3 - The boy that freed Theon tells him that "we're not in the Iron Islands". When Theon is surrounded by his captors and then the boy kills them with his arrows, the main captor tells that boy "you little bastard".

After reading this, people who are unaware can form their own conclusion and see if they turn out to be right when Theon's mysterious captors are fully revealed in terms of dialogue and stuff.

Thanks for pointing all of that out. It's been a while since I watched season 2, so all I really remembered was Theon's men doublecrossed him. So I just assumed it was them torturing him. I forgot about all that other stuff.

Yeah, it's natural to forget since these are small scenes and it's tough to take it all in. Most of the things I mentioned just completely flew over my head the first few times :p

He's probably best known as Owen from the first two series of 'Torchwood'.

Yeah, this show has one of the biggest casts I've ever seen and so many subplots it's hard to keep them all straight.

Amazingly though, all of the different subplots are engaging (IMO), unlike many other shows that try to do the same thing (looking at you, True Blood).

Not to turn this into the Disney/GoT thread, but--

The last time anyone in Westeros heard about Dany's actions, it was through Jorah. Now Jorah's gone all "QUEEN DANY 4EVER!" So does that mean the gang in Westeros has no idea what Dany is up to with the Unsullied?

Varys has connections across the sea in a broader scope. Once Dany starts kicking up more of a fuss they'll know. How much of a priority they give it now that war has erupted on their own shores is a little up in the air.

Although,
since Varys and Illyrio were arguing in season 1 in the dungeons beneath KL (that's not really a spoiler, right? You could easily recognize their voices), with Varys pushing for war now, with Illyrio cautioning against it, maybe they won't know after all.

Was Varys trying to preempt the dragons? I know Robert
was pushing to have Dany and Viserys assassinated, though I think it was more for personal reasons than fear of dragons or invasion.

Possibly. But at the moment, does anyone on Westeros care?

I don't think anyone knew that Dany could bring the dragons back. My point was that Varys is playing his own game, and judging that he is on casual speaking terms with someone aiding and abetting an enemy to the crown's interest and pushing for war with said crown, may not be entirely loyal. Or acting in anyone's interests but his own. Possibly.

Question for book readers - is it accurate that season 3 only covers about half of the events in A Storm of Swords, and that season 4 will pick up the rest?

We're nearly halfway through the season - how far into the book have the first four episodes progressed?

Yeah, and the cast keeps growing! So many subplots. Yeah they all feel engaging, although I only notice that on rewatch and I'm like "ah, this is where this is going".

I don't recall exactly what occurred a quarter way in ASOS but it's pretty accurate. What's most likely to happen in episode 9 or 10 was half-way into the book.

Interesting, thanks!

I totally forgot about that scene. And it basically confirms that
Varys' plan was to set Dany up as a puppet queen to take over in the chaos of a potential War between the Starks and the Lannisters. Only it's clear Vary's underestimated Dany and know is realizing just how much of real threat she poses and now he's got to come up with some way at heading her off at the pass.
Do have that about right?

The plan he and Illyrio were making was actually revolved around Viserys since he was the Targaryen claimant at the time. They simply used Dany to get Viserys a Dothraki army. Varys doesn't have recent news since Jorah is no longer reporting to him. You learn more about his plots and others in ADWD so I won't mention them here.

Okay, yeah, I forgot that Drogo's army was supposed to be for Viserys and that Dany was being offered as a wife for Drogo to cement their alliance. Of course, we know how well THAT worked out for Viserys, don't we? :woot:
