I feel like I'm the only one who didn't really care that Stark, his girl and his mom died. Those characters had such a boring story in Season 2 and 3. When it comes to the Starks, I've always rooted for the bastard, Snow.

It's kind of sad that Stark was in charge of this army and redeeming the family yet it's his mom that knows ****s about to go down when they close the doors. He was oblivious to something that obvious and fishy.

I'll go even further. This is the outcome Robb deserved. He's blundered his way through the war since the end of the first season, making decisions based on emotion instead of logic. Remember when his bannerman (I think it was Karstark but I can't remember who it was for sure) said that Robb lost the war the moment he married Talisa? He was 100% right. It was a monumentally stupid decision. Had he been up there in Edmure's spot, he probably could have taken Casterly Rock and won the war.

Catelyn certainly deserved better since Robb had constantly ignored her advice, but she has had her own mistakes such as her vendetta against an innocent Tyrion in Season 1 and freeing their best leverage (Jaime) this year. Plus she treated Jon Snow like dirt when he probably has the purest heart of any character on the show. So she isn't that sympathetic.

Lol yep. Bad stuff has happened to all the characters, and will continue to happen.
That was one of the most shocking things when you read these books. Most writers, myself included, get so attached to their people they tend to hang on to them, sometimes even TOO long. Not Martin, lol. :p It's like the Walking Dead. Don't get too attached.

People need to chill out and take some milk of the poppy ;)

I always wonder what milk of the poppy tastes like...I remember when I read about that Butterscotch beer in Harry Potter. I wanted one very badly!

OMG I was dreading the Red Wedding for so long and finally it has been unveiled in screen. Granted the unborn baby stabbing was a bit extreme and I somehow knew Talisa was going to bite it as well.

I was also getting nervous about the Blackfish being there too so at least he went to take a piss lol. From that moment on I've hated the Freys ever since. Hope that old fool suffers a cruel fate. Be cool if one of the surviving Direwolves could do the honours.

And speaking of Arya being there, man has she got a bum on her now or what?! Okay perversion aside, I do hold out hope that she reunites with her Direwolf Nymeria further on in the series.

And as for Roose Bolton the backstabbing bastard! I too hope that Jon takes him down!! Don't care much for Ramsay either so who knows, perhaps Theon will get back at him.

Looking forward to the Pie gifts at Ramsey's coming wedding as the show progresses.

They had Butterbeer slushies at Universal in Orlando. They were amazing. Kind of like a Cream Soda slushie but richer and better. I could have one every day!

I don't think anyone deserves this. This was brutal. And Robb admitted to his mistakes - he most definitely did not deserve this.

GRRM said that this wedding was based on stuff from Scottish history. This was brutal and depressing. The Lannisters just gained a great advantage. And now there's 2 more villainous Houses.

This just got like a million times darker. It's gonna be weird to adjust to this tone.

I won't spoil anything, but yeah, from here on out the tone continues to get darker. Remember in Empire Strikes Back when our heros got their asses handed to them. The show is kind of like living in that moment for eternity. I haven't seen it discussed and I'm not sure some even realize this, but essentially the Lannister's won the war of the kings in last night's episode.

Whoa, yeah. I remember that from the Star Wars films. This really feels dark but I think I can get accustomed to this. But holy ****, I couldn't sleep today. And tears keep getting shed.

So, the Lannisters hold Sansa. They've destroyed the Starks. I think their main opponent is Stannis now, who's licking his wounds. Damn Tywin and his letters - no wonder he was so calm about this Robb fiasco. Actions have consequences, I guess. Tywin is one hell of a plotter.

Also, looks like we've got more villains now. First, Theon's playmate (who has to be a Bolton 100%), now the Freys & Roose Bolton. The psychos are coming out to play and the North just got crazy scary.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, you're definitely right there.

Makes sense. Now that I think about it, one of the old dudes men said something along the lines of "the Lannisters say hello. I'm paraphrasing of course.
The old dude was Roose Bolton, Robb's bannerman who holds Harrenhal and when he said "the Lannisters send their regard" it's a reference back to what Jaime says to him when he leaves in episode 7.

And as people have said, there was a ton of political power in it for the Freys if they could have married someone to Robb Stark. Even without Robb proclaiming himself king house Stark is one of the major houses and house Frey is a minor one.

Some comments from around the web:

I don't know if I can take watching this series anymore. I'm so afraid to have affinity with any more characters in this show.

I want to quit because this theme of building lovable, honorable characters and then destroying them is depressing.

I knew this was going to happen again, despite Ned's death in S1, some still thought the "good" guys were safe for the most part. That's why most tv shows, movies and comics are mediocre, thanks to stupid people that want the same predictable, unrealistic crap over and over.

Hopefully ratings won't go down that much, so George R.R. Martin & co can continue the story without compromising to appease the weak-minded.

The Red Wedding was based on The Black Dinner
Murder of the Douglas chiefs at Edinburgh Castle

The Douglases became so powerful that by the early fifteenth century they were seen as a threat to the stability of the nation. In 1440 the young William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas and his brother were invited to dine with the ten year-old King James II of Scotland.

The dinner was organised by Sir William Crichton of Clan Crichton. Known as the Black Dinner, a black bull's head, the symbol of death, was brought in. After the dinner the Douglas chiefs were dragged out to Castle Hill, given a mock trial and beheaded. The Clan Douglas then laid siege to Edinburgh Castle. Perceiving the danger, Crichton surrendered the castle to the king who was then given the title of Lord Crichton. It is still unclear exactly who else was ultimately responsible, though it is thought Livingstone and Buchan were also likely candidates.

The Douglas Clan got done in again centuries later

Murder of the Earl of Douglas by the King of Scots

The strength of the Douglases made it impossible for James II of Scotland to rule freely. After fruitless feuding with the Douglases the King invited William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas to Stirling Castle in 1452 under the promise of safe conduct, but then the King accused the Earl of conspiracy in his dealings with the Yorkists in England and through a pact made between Douglas, the Earl of Crawford and the Lord of the Isles. Upon Douglas' refusal to repudiate the pact and reaffirm his loyalty to James II, the King drew his dagger and stabbed Douglas in the throat. The story goes that the King's Captain of the Guard then finished off the Earl with a pole axe. The body was thrown from the window into a garden below, where it was later given burial. A stained glass window bearing the Douglas Arms now overlooks "Douglas Garden", the spot where the Earl is said to have fallen

I'm really wondering what the last scene of the finale will be, but the only thing I can think of from the book that would make for an awesome cliffhanger is [BLACKOUT]Lady Stoneheart[/BLACKOUT], but I feel like it's too early for that.

I don't quite agree with the other poster that it's all dark. It's a mix of bad and good, just as before, and I think we'll all get emotional again in both directions. You can dare hope that some things will turn out as you want, and you can dread every time something bad might happen.

U'd think people would've learned that nobody is safe in this series when they killed Ned Stark but no people just don't get it. I guess this is another lesson for them.

It would certainly be early but then again the timing of that isn't crucial so it's not entirely impossible, especially since there's a year before we see the other half of what's the same book. It would be a really cool cliffhanger.

The final scene could also be what the episode is called: Mhysa. That doesn't have the same special quality to it though.

Another possibility is [Blackout]Coldhands[/blackout].

It probably shows how rare it is for a series (books and TV) to really dare to do it this way. The viewers were shocked when Ned died but then probably fell back into the comfort of thinking "well, they killed him so it would seem that it's not safe for main characters" and only thought smaller roles would die.

Its pretty dark. I wouldn't call anything that happens "good" but more like "less dark".

Lena Headey just Tweeted she is gonna miss her friend Michelle on GoT. [BLACKOUT]Either this is misdirection or they may have cut Lady Stoneheart. There was a rumor Talissa would become Lady Stoneheart. I really hope that isn't what they are doing.[/BLACKOUT]

[BLACKOUT]I think that the purple wedding will be one of the biggest cheering moments for viewers in the show that far, despite who it gets pinned on. Jon becoming LC will also make some pretty happy. Regarding Lady Stoneheart I think it's deliberate misdirection. Michelle wasn't the only one leaving here and they can't really have filmed together much at all since King's Landing is Croatia and everything Catelyn has been in was Northern Ireland.[/BLACKOUT]

I see what you mean. Also, I'm happy that nothing turns out as I want. It feels so unpredictable, yet so right. It has consequences. I don't think the Red Wedding is just shock value, right? I'm sure it'll have crazy consequences in the North.

They kill off main characters on British shows all the time and shows like Lost, Heroes, 24 and so on were not afraid to kill of a big character.

You can see Lord Walder Frey get killed in Harry Brown ;)
