And not to get too nerdy about the workout stuff, but Henry's muscles look very real, dry, hard, and permanent (yes that felt every bit as awkward typing as it did you reading it). It doesn't look like his muscles are filled with air and water like some others, i.e. Evans. The look like real gains that he can build upon for the sequels. He looks like a MMA fighter more than a bodybuilder. He looks like he has real strength vs. puffed up beach muscles. Which, by the way, is much harder to do compared to cycling creatine and just "pumping" up.
Totally agree about this point. Henry doesn't look like someone who's gone from skinny to bodybuilder in 4 months due to a crazy training program - he actually looks more like he's ripped and muscular anyway from athletics/sport, and has been for years. As you say, very similar to an MMA fighter or boxer with extremely low bodyfat and well defined muscles. There's quite a noticeable different in that kind of physique and beach muscles which can disappear almost as quick as they appear. Hugh Jackman has a similar look, and even when he's not working out for a film you see shots of him on a beach or something and he's still pretty big - it looks very permanent, and not an intense '300' type gain.
However, I don't know where all the comments about Cavill not being as "naturally built" as other Superman actors is coming from. Sure, he may be shorter than Reeve, Welling, or Routh, but other than Welling, none of them really had a natural, Superman-esque frame or structure. Reeve and Routh were both moreso tall, skinny beanpole types before trying to get in shape for the role. Even after putting on muscle, Routh's physique wasn't very Superman-esque and it wasn't just the suit. He had a long torso and wide waist, which is the opposite of the broad shouldered, v-shaped torso that Superman typical is depicted as having. Although not Superman's canon 6'3" in height, Cavill has far more similar proportions to Superman as depicted in the comics. He has broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His hard work is more evident because he has good structure to begin with.
Totally agree here also. Cavill has obviously put in a LOT of hard work to get to that size as quick as he did. When you're not naturally big or muscular, it's always harder to pack on weight but he seems to have done it with flying colours in the relatively short timeframe he had.
Most of the Superman actors were fairly skinny before being cast. Even Welling - who I usually consider the one to have the most natural build for the role - looked a lot slimmer in the early seasons of SV than when he hit his last 20s and started to fill out more.
Reeve 4yrs before Superman-

Routh 3yrs before Superman Returns

Welling in early Smallville seasons

............................................. and then Superman happens to them all, and they start eating 100 eggs and 25 chickens a day to build muscle
