It's good to see some pics of Cavill where (finally) he's not completely covered in stubble or a beard.

very true...I wonder though, if Clark is in Africa in the movie...will he shave?

Hopefully not.

Someone posted earlier about Routh having too much smoothness and makeup in SR and I completely agree, at times he looked like a waxwork.

Superman in the comics has been shown with stubble (or even a beard) plenty of times. Not to mention having his torso bared plenty of times and usually drawn with a hairy chest. I much prefer THAT look to a metrosexual, stubble-free Supes - he's Superman, not Superboy, so there's nothing wrong with making him as masculine as possible.

Plus it gives us a chance to see Supes shaving with the heat vision and a mirror :D

too much makeup can make you look stupid. I hope we see a little stubble on him if he spends a lot of time in Africa. And he is SuperMAN not a boy. I do agree I'd rather see hair on his chest instead of a chest that looks like a 12 year old boy

Routh was like, completely hairless if I recall correctly.

Pretty darn hairless. It was weird.

Give me a hairy-chested Supes any day!

I think you're misaligning gruffness with the mere existence of hair. That's a bit silly.

Routh's issue was he was too perfectly groomed. The excessively gelled hair, the overly caked makeup, the slender figure... it was everything that went against the conventional male icon. He looked like a Ken doll in a Supes outfit.

Cavill's already got a lot going for him. Not only does he have sex appeal, but he's got chiseled features that are exemplary of masculinity. As long as they leave that be and don't make Supes come off like a wimp, he'll be fine with a clean shaven face. For the sake of maintaining the typical Superman image, I would hope stubble isn't there.

he did look pretty odd to be as old as he was at the time and no chest hair...although you could tell he was growing stubble on his face from time to time

I don't see anything wrong with a little stubble while he's traveling the world and not Superman yet.

No, I'm not misaligning gruffness with the mere existence of hair and I wouldn't be so narrowminded as to suggest that. I'm saying that stubble and chest hair (on a cosmetic level at least) imply more masculinity; there's no denying that. There are obviously a lot of other factors which contribute to masculinity too - voice, demeanour, etc. And as you mention, grooming.

Routh's Superman was pretty much hairless apart from the hair on his head. And I don't know what kind of makeup they used on him, but his face had a pale waxy look which was completely at odds with many of the depictions of Superman in comics and other media, which usually gave him at least a healthy colour and some hair on his chest, arms and occasionally face.

Superman grows hair, just like humans - so I can't see why Cavill wouldn't be portrayed with stubble at times. Having Routh be completely hairless for the most part just seemed utterly unnatural.

i like that he looks the tallest. i love the intensity in his eyes in the last pic. hehe

Very good Cavill pics. That last one is begging to be manipped

He will do just fine...can't wait to see him as Clark or Superman

The Hair and Make up people will love that he's grown it out. They can do anything with it now. Of course they'll cut out the curls.
