Excellent.

It was a moving moment, I'm not surprised it captured fans' attention. I think this version of Clark/Lois is the only couple I have liked in a comic book movie.

I still want to see another Superman movie with Cavil, but it doesn't look like those at WB are interested. It also seems a little less likely given what they did with a certain Superman character (that they didn't even name in the film itself).

About the time UNCLE came out last summer Men's Health had an in-depth Cavill interview. Promoting that film.

In it Cavill said, after saying how great a character Superman is and how he loved the role, that he hoped the "big chesses" at WB cared about Superman too.

I thought it an odd thing to say which is why I recall it to this day. I think he knew then what was going on.

I'm still hoping for a Superman cameo in WW. I'm hoping Snyder's statements have been so obtuse because he's trying to keep that secret.

I was thinking that too - i was hoping for a superman cameo just to say - 'hey look - supes being supes.'

I wondered how they could do it, i figured in the 18 months between MOS & BvS we could see WW rush to a tragedy and get there just as superman saves the day, she stands back in awe.

I mean, you're telling me WW has no interest at all in this 'alien' that suddenly appears and has super powers similar to an amazon?

I also thought about a supes cameo in SS, how one of them evaded supes and watched in awe/terror as this man, the total opposite of Batman, swoops down in day light, smiling, foiling a heist. Maybe Boomerang.

Charles Brandon :D

The first series of 'The Tudors' coincided with me starting my BA in History. A group of us decided to get together to watch it every Friday at 9 pm in order to laugh at the historical innacuracies. After about 3 weeks of kidding ourselves, we admitted that we actually didn't care about the anachronisms - the cast members were so beautiful, and the series so soap-opera-esque, it became our guilty pleasure.

This is from the episode that finally broke my brain:

Ah, good times :yay:

Me too!

I think it's because of that sense of being equal partners they had. They both took turns either saving or helping each other. It was a lovely "I've got you and you've got me" dynamic. Also, Adams and Cavill have a subtle and tender chemistry.

Lois saved Batman from [BLACKOUT]being burnt to a crisp by a desperate Superman - or she saved the planet from becoming whatever it was in that vision Bruce had.[/BLACKOUT] I like that Lois actually gets in danger and does important things out of her own will in these.

I bet Greg Rucka realized how prophetic this piece be when he wrote it a few years back. My favorite part:

Look, I like gritty. I write gritty. There is a time and a place for gritty. I’ll take my Batman gritty, thank you, and I will acknowledge that such a portrayal means that my 11 year old has to wait before he sees The Dark Knight. But if Hollywood turns out a Superman movie that I can’t take him to? They’ve done something wrong. Superman is many, many things. Gritty he is not, something that Richard Donner certainly understood.

(Pet peeve time: for the contingent out there who sneer at heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman and Captain America, those icons who still, at their core, represent selfless sacrifice for the greater good, and who justify their contempt by saying, oh, it’s so unrealistic, no one would ever be so noble… grow up. Seriously. Cynicism is not maturity, do not mistake the one for the other. If you truly cannot accept a story where someone does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, that says far more about who you are than these characters.)

This is not an argument of era or audience sophistication. Sophistication does not negate sincerity, nor does it even deny it, as the Captain America movie proves. Sophistication demands better storytelling, clearer motivation, purer intention. “Gritty” is an apologist word in this sense, used in the place of “realism.” We don’t go to the movies for “realism.” This is why documentaries aren’t the major product in the theaters. Sophistication does not demand realism; it demands smart.

I'll take quality realism over lousy escapism, which, up until MoS, was every Superman film for me.

I could do with a healthy balance of the two. Specifically in a way that can actually let Cavill's charm shine through.

Happy, smiling and charismatic supes would be appropriate in both a realist and an escapist story.

I liked the portrayal they had going for them in MOS, but I felt like BVS Supes became much too withdrawn.

Cavill's Superman sees this as more of a job, though he's obviously not always cold about it. Witness his "fake rage" in the opening sequence and his few smiles.

Sawyer, did you like the film? I agree with you and Mrs. K about balance. Obviously, happier needs to happen. I was just trying to say that if I had to choose MoS/BvS or the Donner films, I'd choose MoS/BvS.

I actually disagree with this. A dark and gritty Superman movie can work. The key is contrasting Superman with that tone. Make Superman the bright spot fighting against the darkness. That's what this movie failed to do.

This. Totally.

As I was saying in another thread, at least he doesn't give up his powers for Lois and sex. To me, that's the ultimate #notmysuperman.

I saw Cav-el as wanting to help--as Lois said in MoS, not helping folks is not an option for him-- but what makes it such a "job" is the people who are cynical about him and make him feel like more of a burden than help.

I didn't dislike it, and think a lot of people are going overboard about it, but... it was messy.

I really don't like the idea of him seeing this as job in any capacity. That makes me :csad:. The best versions of superman see it as his greatest joy and accomplishment.

But there are some subtle moments of enjoyment, as you said.

Superman's mission in this just seems like something he has to do, for his fathers.

Especially Jonathan. He's honoring their legacy by being Superman. It's holy work, but maybe not entirely easy.

I would imagine it will become his greatest joy eventually. Especially with all these complaints about his character.

I do hope that, post-death and return, he is given a certain sense of clarity or has a bit of weight taken off his shoulders.

Superman will keep on saving the world, but he longs for acceptance. Even if he says he doesn't care.
