Henry Cavill IS Superman: - Part 3

I just dont want camp but I loved Thor and am going back to see it again in IMAX something I didnt do with SR and could have I own Sr but I own a lot of Superman Stuff. But after seeing the Imortals trailer in Imax 3D I was stoked to see Cavill he looks good on screen and all I said to my boys was THATS THE NEW SUPERMAN!

Very surprised to see the success of THOR with the reviews and the B.O.

I still think the movie is somewhat overrated, but I'm glad such a different superhero-character fares well with the generel audience. I wonder why that is.

Difficult to predict if MOS will do the same. It definitely should if done right, especially with Snyder-action and visuals.

I think the best thing about Thor was his relationship with Jane. It added to story instead a dragging it down. My favorite part was when he flew with her. Her reaction was great before he took off (she was like how awesome is this, I have new boyfriend and he can fly). I hope that's the same way in Man of Steel and we get more moments like. I can see Henry and Amy having great moments like that (or even better).

Yeah, I was surprised by how much the love story in Thor elevated the movie overall. Although I've never been the typical fanboy that abhors the idea of romance in a superhero movie, oftentimes the love story can either feel rushed (Spider-Man), underdeveloped (Batman Begins) or just plain stupid (Daredevil). But I found the relationship between Thor and Jane really refreshing. It actually kind of reminded me of Enchanted... the dashing prince sweeps the rational, level headed woman off her feet. I hope we get something like that in Man of Steel. I'm sure the actors can pull it off. Hopefully the script will allow for it.

Agreed. I mean, I don't think Cavill would have made Superman Returns better. But I do think he's more suited to Snyder's Man of Steel than Routh would have been.

You don't even what the movie is about

So much hate for Routh nowadays.

Thor raised the bar. Thor proved that stuff that would have looked campy and downright unworkable on the screen in 2001, can look believable and be effective in 2011, no small thanks to improvements in CGI, 3D, etc.
Snyder has to outdo Thor.
He just has to.
I'm sure WB & Snyder have been watching Thor and its box office success with great interest.

Yeah, I wouldn't have put the pressure on Snyder to outdo Thor, but he kind of put a target on his back when he dissed Thor in the media. Now granted, there were many of us that had the same reaction when they announced a Thor film, but it turned out to be a critical and financial success. So now Snyder has to deliver something bigger and better, or at least on the same level.

THOR has made things work that people thought wouldn't work on the big screen. MAN OF STEEL has no excuses if it fails. We need a Superman for a new generation if the character is to prosper.

I agree... my main concern is that we keep hearing all this talk about "how to make Superman relevant in today's world" and I can't help but feel it's all a little silly. Superman (in the comics) has adapted throughout the years to fit the modern age as best as possible... just as much as most other characters. I think the idea that he's old and corny comes mostly from people who haven't seen or read anything with Superman in it since the 1980s, other than the boring and uninspired Superman Returns.

And besides, how "relevant" are any of these characters, really? We're talking about guys in costumes that go around fighting evil megalomaniacs that also wear costumes. None of this has to be as heavy handed some people feel it needs to be. Superman doesn't need to "fit" in the real world because there is no Superman in the real world. I understand making a film that feels that way, but if you're allowing that to keep you from using key characters or fun scenarios, then it becomes a problem.

I mean, at the heart of it, Superman is no more corny or silly than Thor. I know Thor hasn't appeared on film before (unless you count Vincent D'Onofrio's awesome cameo in Adventures in Babysitting) but the idea of a "god of thunder" could feel completely stupid if it wasn't handled right. Moreover, if Superman is old and outdated, you're going to tell me that Norse gods aren't?

But they're not, as long as you can make them feel fun and interesting. And Superman is the same way. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that if they attempt to rein Superman in TOO much and keep him TOO grounded in reality, then the inaccurate public perception that he is dull and boring WON'T change. I hope that made sense.

Made sense to me.

Superman doesn't need to change all that much, they just need to come up with an interesting, somewhat smart and fun idea for the film.

We just need to get away from the Donner films as much as possible. That's where all of this is coming from. The Donner films are just keeping him back from a perception standpoint and film standpoint.

one thing I really liked in Thor was the design of Asgard.

I want a Krypton that has that level of design. not some barren ice/crystal planet again!!

I agree, and before anyone jumps on that and accuses me of having some sort of irrational hatred for the Donner films, let me clarify. I love the first Superman film. It remains one of my favorite films of the genre... sometimes I still think it's the best of the lot. But anyone can see that it is dated. And more importantly, there are elements of it that can be done away with. I actually had no problem with Lex Luthor being portrayed as a wisecracking, real estate-obsessed crook (though I do still hold a grudge over Hackman refusing to shave his head, lol). But Lex has never been portrayed that way anywhere else, so I think we can let go of that. The crystals and the overall look of Kryptonian technology can also be done away with in favor of something more futuristic. Maybe not exactly Coruscant, but along those lines. I can go on, but my point is, that as great as the first Superman movie and arguably the second one were, it's time to move on, plain and simple.

Fellowship of the Ring came out that year. I seem to remember that being **somewhat** successful.

i have not read the comics but i found it pretty stupid they spoke english... and have a rather american sense of humor or even earthly sense of humor... i would have liked to see that gone... it was kind of campy but since snyder has made fun of thor and is not a fan of camp, im sure his superman will not be too campy or humorous...

the design of the planet was good though, i'd like it to look brighter, somewhere that everyone would want to live... like a cross between past and future, bright and beautiful, not cold and ugly... strange and futuristic but bright... and please... no english

Exactly what I was thinking... after Asgard, Krypton better look pretty damn great.

I'm new here and you have to start somewhere so here's my two cents:

Krypton should look like something we've never seen before but inspired by the comics. Snyder seems to like to stay as faithful to the comics as possible, but the question is which Superman version of Krypton will they want to be most
faithful to?

i'd like so see some bright images like some of these, i don't want to see these alien planets that look like a ball of sand and dirt.. if they are so advanced, wouldn't they want their planet to be beautiful?

Me 2. A perfect blend of organic structures and lush vegetation. Not a cold industrial Coruscant.

While the issue of what the story will be, let alone how it'll be executed, I have no doubt in my mind that Cavill has the necessary charm and charisma to capture the attention of Comic book fans and General Audience members alike.

One thing that was unanimously agreed upon about Thor was how good Chris was with his portrayal of Thor, and I believe that Cavill has it within him to gain universal praise for his portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, especially if the direction of the character and the story that we're covering in his life is a welcomed one as well.

I think more or less, we need to see who the man is behind the cape, that while Superman may be this larger than life character who inspires the best people, he's also still this person that some of us can relate to. I mean wasn't there a comic book that featured Batman saying that he viewed Superman as the most human out of anyone that he knew?
