Hitman: Absolution - Part 1

I thought Olyphant was horribly miscast but Paul Walker? Bahahaha!

On the subject of the film tho, I really don't understand why Fox wouldn't give Bateson a shot. How much money do they really expect Walkers name to draw? If this were 2002 I'd completely understand but even with the resurgence of the Fast and Furious films I wouldn't think Walkers name has that much pull. Hell I'd argue Batesons involvement would bring more fans than walker would. Stoopid Hollywood

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, just food for thought: I remember when a lot (and I mean, the overwhelming majority) of people said Health Ledger was a poor choice to play The Joker.

I don't know about that. There's redeeming qualities to 47. We saw a lot of those in Absolution.

I didn't say 47 doesn't have redeeming qualities. I'm saying, you can have him run around and be heroic throughout the movie but the moment you have him strangling some dude on $11 an hour who's just trying to get through the day, you lose the audience. Now, there are plenty of ways around it, like showing the schmo kick a dog or something before he gets killed -now the audience hates the guy and doesn't care if 47 hides his corpse in a closet. But is that the 'real' 47?

My feeling is that the 'real' 47, the video game version anyway, is a lot more complex than your regular anti-hero. He's a dude who a will kill the catering staff just to get through the kitchen -all to get a payday. And he'll save a life on occasion, if he feels the need. If a movie were to be brave enough to explore that character it would truly be something special.

Does Bateson look the part? or is this another thing like people wanting Kevin Conroy as Batman in live action which is completely dumb. I can't bring in the acting card against Bateson because Paul Walker is beyond terrible.

David Bateson is the reason 47 looks the way he does. The character was modeled after the guy. There's absolutely no excuse for Fox not to use him. Bateson is a perfectly capable screen actor.

Justified. Argument over.

Nobody is saying Olyphant is a bad actor, but that doesn't mean he was right for the part of 47 just because he has acting chops. He was horribly miscast. 47 should be a more mature looking, older man.

But few choices could be worse than Paul Walker. Good lord what are they thinking...

Paul Walker? They simply don't want the Movie to do well, do they?

On the subject of actors, outside of Bateson, can anyone come up with a good alternative? I can't.

He looks a little old but nothing make up can't fix. I agree with you. Give the guy a chance. I actually thought given a good script Olyphant would have been great. He has that intense, intimidating stare

Pat mentioned Running Scared earlier. If you haven't seen it, you should.

I thought he was great, but each to their own.

Anyway, the reason Fox get a guy like Paul Walker rather than David Bateson isn't complicated. Walker is a marketable name that the general audience is familiar with. David Bateson is a name known to video game nerds and pretty much no one else. The studio aren't interested in the character, the video games, what the fans think. They're interested in milking the franchise for whatever cash they can get out of it. It's the same reason Dreamworks get Angelina Jolie or whoever to voice a supporting character -it adds nothing to the film other than being able to put Jolie's name on the movie poster. Ching ching.

Couldn't they get big names in supporting roles instead or as the main villain? And have the main actor actually be someone who's right for the role. Even if it's not David Bateson. Agent 47 needs to be somewhat seasoned, and not be a hunk.

I think this was literally Fox's thought process.

Exec 1: Wow, that new Fast and the Furious movie is really popular! We could get that bald guy to play 47!

Exec 2: Vin Diesel?

Exec 3: Yeah, let's call his people!

10 minutes later

Exec 2: He can't do it

Exec 1: Damn..... So who else is in The Fast and the Furious?

3 Days later....

They could but that would require way more thought than they're willing to put in to a quick cash grab.

Paul Walker is 40 now. Without the stubble and surfer-haircut, he'll probably look pretty good as 47. I think it's worth waiting for a trailer at the very least before condemning the choice completely -I know I sound like a broken record, but this is exactly the same response a lot of people gave when Heath Ledger got announced as The Joker. Who knows, he might surprise us.

I'd like to point out though, that Ledger had at least already proved himself as a decent actor by then. Paul Walker...well, to say the only films I know him in are Fast and the Furious movies, would be pretty accurate.

Eh walker is terrible in that too

No that's not accurate. It's widely accepted that he was good in that role. It literally might very well be his only decent role in his career. Not saying that makes him right for this role, but the dude does have some acting chops, somewhere inside him.

I'd agree with you, but it didn't matter at the time. For all Ledger's previous successes the vast majority of fandom didn't care. He could never be The Joker and he'd be terrible at it, so said the internet. I'm not even saying Walker will be good, I'm just suggesting we wait and see, at least until there's a trailer or hell, a photo, before writing the guy off completely.

I hope he actually wears disguises this time and acts like a classy professional, not a blood thirsty killer.

Hitman is all about being the sophisticated killer, fancy hotels, luxurious mansions, high rise casinos. I think Paul Walker is too "pretty" boy for Hitman, but as long as he can be a classy stone cold killer, I could accept it.

Also, in Absolution, I really enjoyed 47 eating the Apple while watching Lenny dig. It added a lot of personality to him.
