Actually I think Phillip Winchester does the best English accent by an American actor I've ever heard. I was shocked when I found out that Sgt Stonebridge in Strike Back was played by a Yank.

No I totally agree. I remember seeing him in the Royal Shakespeare Company's filmed stage performance of King Lear that aired on PBS (the one starring Ian McKellen), and being shocked to find out he was American. He's really underrated, imo (he was my favorite of the rumored names up for Captain America before Evans was even mentioned), and could definitely be a great Bond. I was just pointing out that if we think the outcry over a Brit playing Superman was ridiculous, just wait 'til they cast an American as Bond, haha.

Make-up and surgery can do wonders. Age doesn't matter as long as you present yourself properly. Look at Stallone. I still have a hard time believing he's in his mid-60s especially with the physical work he's still doing!

Ironically, Sean Connery looked better off in Never Say Never Again then he did when he was 12 years younger in Diamonds Are Forever.

Really good movie- one of the best, if not the best Bond film. After 23 movies, they finally get into who bond is, give the other members of MI6 a more active role than ever before, and just beautiful cinematography.
The only complaint I have is Bonds stupid, stupid plan.
At first I thought oh, you take M somewhere and give the villain a trail of breadcrumbs to what's actually a trap- an ambush or something, while M sits comfortably somewhere waiting for things to blow over. . . but the breadcrumbs lead him to M. Why was she there? That plan was ******ed.

Given the situation and the need to get M into a controlled situation away from London quickly, Bond's plan was smart in theory, but due to a number of factors it didnt play out as he hoped.

Rule of thumb, if you must fight then you should pick a battleground you know. Bond grew up on the moor and knew the landscape, tunnels, and house very well. Silva not knowing the landscape would be at a disadvantage and would be susceptible to any number of dangers. Drowning in the moor for example. Bond also thought his fathers weapons were still there, but they had been sold.

It wasn't simply Bond's fight, it was M's as well. She wanted no more blood on her hands. It was her and Bond and that was the pact they made in the car.

Also pretty sure Silva would have known if M wasn't at Skyfall.

Nothing of what you said excuses Bond for bring M to the fight.
It wasn't smart in theory.
If he hid her somewhere, and they lead him somewhere else , that would've been a good plan. No reason to think it wouldn't have worked.
Good movie, but clearly they brought her just so they could have things play out the way they did (which was great).

It is all spelled out in the film.

How exactly were they going to fool Silva? That was kind of the entire idea they set forth before the final act, they couldn't fool him nor could they risk actually hiding M away. Silva knows how to mess with satellites and hacked all of MI-6. He had every last detail on Bond and was able to blow up M's office without being on the same continent. He talked about being able to destabilize multinational and rigid an election with the press of a button.

In theory if they attempt to truly hide M away while leading to another location one of two things happen.

They actually achieve hiding M away, Silva simply disappears until she resurfaces. He does this knowing the names of every field agent out there. He'd simply starts putting the names back on the internet. And there is no reason to think he doesn't still have this information. Am I to believe he doesn't have a back up somewhere in the world?

The other scenario is that Bond tries to fool him, Silva simply avoids Skyfall and kills M wherever they hide her, because as Silva made us well aware of earlier in the film he has hacked MI-6.

The plan works because all the chips are on the table. Silva has his chance to get M and Bond and M have their chance to kill Silva. Winner takes all. That is why the plan works. Bond has the home-field advantage, while Silva has the men and firepower advantage.

Silva showed up because Bond lead him there. On purpose.
Which means Silva was taking whatever bait bond left.
Which means if M wasn't there, Silva would have shown up anyway.
He's not omniscient. He wouldn't "just know" when Bond's lying or not. Bond had the first chance in the entire movie to plan ahead of Silva, that's the difference.

I finally saw the film. I'd say it was very good, but not great. I loved the final act, but much of the first half of the film doesn't really go anywhere and the pacing is off. The movie could have really benefited from being a half hour shorter. I had said a few weeks ago that I was hoping that we would get the first truly great Bond villain since Alec Trevelyan and we didn't, so I found that someone disappointing. I loved the throwbacks to the previous films, and most of the cast was amazing especially Craig, Dench, and Harris. If Casino Royale was Craig's From Russia with Love and Quantum of Solace was Craig's Diamonds Are Forever, then this was his Thunderball. I would have it as a top ten film, but it would be in the back half. There are a few issues that prevent it from being one of the elite Bond films.

There is one other thing I really loved about this film though.

The final demise of that stupid theory that James Bond is just a codename assigned to various agents and each actor to play the role is a different character. With the visit to Bond's childhood home playing a big role in this film, that should be the last bit of dirt being piled onto that theory.

Finally saw it today.

Easily one of the best Bond films and one of my favourite films this year. It's a tad behind Casino for me but it's still in my Top 5 Bond films for me. Daniel Craig is definitely my favourite without a doubt and Judi Dench puts in a great performance.

Javier Bardem is a fantastic villain as always. It felt like a great celebration of Bond. Though some of the themes were a bit too hammered in for my liking, but it didn't ruin it overall. The Batman influence is obvious but that's fine by me.

Not bothered about the box art for Skyfall as I am putting the blu ray disk in the Bond 50th box set.

The earlier poster is correct, the breadcrumbs should have led to Bond with M driving in the opposite direction.

I think an update of Bloefeld as the mastermind behind Quantum would be an interesting direction to take Bond 24 (which, after seeing Skyfall again tonight I actually wouldn't mind being titled "With Pleasure"). I would imagine bringing back Bardem for some flashbacks during his 5-month imprisonment, since Silva was such a brilliant character, where they could introduce Bloefeld as his "backer" of sorts, manipulating Silva's motivations and vis a vis his actions in Skyfall. Obviously the Donald Pleasance version of Bloefeld would be too outrageous, but something similar, where he is this sort of semiomnisient, larger-than-life villain.

Have you read You Only Live Twice? That's the Blofeld that needs to be seen if they bring back the character.
