James Bond In Skyfall - - - - Part 13

Dr. No is one of those films when I first saw it I thought it was good but with each and every time I see it I seem to enjoy it a little more. I like it so much now I even consider it in my top 3 or 4 Bond films. It seemed to have something that a lot of the other films didn't have, its hard to explain it might have something to do with Connery's performance being a little more serious I think and the film itself kinda has a mystery feel to it. Dr. No is a great villain too. I feel Thunderball is when Connery's started to slip but YOLT is when it was more apparent.
It's the acting without a doubt. Dr. No is very close to Skyfall in how it seriously regards most of it's principle cast, plus it's shot to be very film-like rather than like a straight up blockbuster.

I think it has more in common with films like The French Connection than some of the future Bond installments.

By the way, if they ever bring back Tracy I think they'll make a completely different story instead of remaking On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Both Dr. No and From Russia With Love were influenced greatly by Hitchcock movies, especially the latter.

I hope these are the routes they go with Bond. I kinda want a Thunberball like movie where the whole world is actually in trouble and Bond has to save it. We've yet to have Bond face an immediate threat to the whole world.

Here's what I want:

- An immediate threat
- A snow scene
- Bond in the woods (maybe in snow) or the jungle
- Bond vs. Quantum
- An army or a group of guys helping Bond in a huge battle in the end (haven't had that in along time)

I pretty much agree with this. I'm ready for Craig's Bond to face a huge threat, I just don't like every Bond film to have that kind of threat. Quantum hasn't really lived up to the modern day SPECTRE lable but I don't think SPECTRE was really that big of world threat til Thunderball anyways. I'm ready for Craig's Thunderball.

By the way, if they ever bring back Tracy I think they'll make a completely different story instead of remaking On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

The thought of them introducing Tracy never crossed my mind considering this is reboot. It almost seems that Vesper kinda fills that role in the Craig films as Bonds only true love.

One thing that I personally would like to see in the next film is to cut down on the globetrotting somewhat. I liked in several of the older films that you really got a sense of the environment and culture, almost to the point that it was like a travelogue for the location in question like with Jamaica in DN, Turkey in FRWL, Japan in YOLT, etc. I miss that.

They cut down on it in this film about as much as they are going to. Majority of it took place in Britain and the plot revolved around Britain and MI6. QOS spent most of its time in Bolivia, and CR spent a lot of time in Monte Carlo so its not like they are blasting to fifty locations on a whim.

Most people in this thread got their wish with Skyfall when they said they wanted a Bond movie to take place and revolve around Britain.

Yeah, we're not gonna get much better than what we got in Skyfall. Bond even got to fight in Parliament and the tubes.

That's what the next Bond movie needs also:

- A really, really good fist fight.
- And a big, strong henchman to fight.

Yeah, I wanna see that moment where the guy steps up and Bond just looks at his chest then looks up at the guy'd face with the "...this is going to hurt" look on his face.

So, uh...late to the partay but finally saw Skyfall in theaters today. I thought the first half was okay and started thinking "oh, okay so its seems similar to the first Craig films" but then the second half.....blew me away! Seriously it was classic Bond again, in my eyes. Q, Moneypenny, and the CAR....the CAR!!! Oh the final scene really had me smiling. James Bond FTW indeed! Easy 9/10 for me based on the second half alone.

Does that mean we get gadgets in future movies now? Please? :D

The second half had the same effect on me. It just kept getting better and better and youre absolutely right...the car was great. When the guns come out the front and shoot the henchmen and the final showdown I was on the edge of my seat. And the final scene holds so much promise. That felt like the proper start of Bond and like he found out the kind of man he wanted to be.

I cant wait to watch it again on blu-ray next month!

Next month it comes out on blu-ray?! Gosh I saw it late. Yeah I was flipping out when the car got out the machine guns I almost fist pumped the air. Then they BLEW IT UP! :cmad:

Its truly like Bond found out who he is and the Bond adventures really begin now.

Yeah, it comes out in the States on Feb 12 and the 18th in the UK.

God, when Silva blew up the car I was PISSED then Bond had this "**** no!!!" look on his face and I immediately knew Silva had went to far lol. Then Bond goes tramping through the house carrying propane tanks while **** is blowing up around him with this "Gettin real tired of your ****, Silva" look on his face and I just started laughing.

Are we the same person? lol, yeah I definitely thought it was funny right after the car exploded Bond definitely looked furious and was just "you're dead Silva."

I think that's the moment Silva truly moved into super villain territory. :oldrazz: It made me angry and sad, but I also found it endearing in a funny way. Bond's screw face shows how much it means to him. Cars are one of his main hobbies and it's possible Silva knew of this given his knack for hacking and finding stuff out. To me it seems it spurred Bond on to really blow the place up as all bets were now off. If Silva thought Bond would avoid blowing any more of his own stuff up he was wrong.

I also think there's something in there about the DB5 - a signature staple of classic Bond, getting blown up by modern helicopters. This constant battle of old and new throughout the movie. You can take away items from Bond but at the end of the day they are only extensions of the man himself. Just like how Silva is literally stabbed in the back again by the knife - to which Kincade said "sometimes the old ways are the best" while holding it up in a earlier scene - which proved to be true in this instance.

Lots of symbolism in this movie reinforcing the main plot. It's very true you can have the gadgets, the cars, and the suits, but that stuff doesn't make you Bond. He is more than the sum of those parts. This movie seemed to make a point of that by stripping him down and showing him at his most vulnerable. More than ever I feel we got to see who Bond is. The person under all the stuff.

On a side note, I think the villain's lair blowing up in flames in the end used to be a staple of the Bond films. I'm glad they dropped that and I hope they dont bring it back :woot:
