I love The Spy Who Loved Me (good use of Jaws) and I hate Moonraker (bad use of Jaws):woot:

Bond pretty much saved Sony this year. They were doing poop business and MIB as well as ASM didn't do gangbuster business at the box office and they sold the licensing rights for Spidey so no action figure or lunchbox money.

I never thought that in 2012 a James Bond movie would crush a Spider-Man movie at the box office, but here we are.

I imagine they sold the rights since they were struggling going into 2012 and weren't we hearing last year the company was on the verge of bankruptcy?

That's the truth right there.

To be fair, Mendes has 4 more movies on Webb, 8 more years of film directing experience, and 7 more years of professional directing experience (Mendes' stage directing compared to Webb's music video directing).

Did Sony distribute MIB worldwide? Because it gross over $600 million.

Can someone please tell me if they have heard if Bond 24 will have a more formulaic type story. I want a damn gunbarrel at the beginning of the movie without a gimmick and I want Bond to get his mission from M and visit Q branch. Is that too much to ask for nowadays in the Craig films? The ending of Skyfall at first had me optimistic but then I started to wonder if that was more paying homage to the older films or if it was to symbolize a return to formula for the next film.

I dont think anyone can tell you that right now.

As long as those are the only things from the Bond formula they'll take away. Everything else about The Bond formula can burn now. It's that "it needs to fit the Bond formula" mentality that killed Brosnan's post Goldeneye movies.

Bond might be the only franchise I can think of where people actually want a film to be formulaic. A strange phenomenon.

Just curious what other Bond fans on here think about this too. Am I in the minority who want to see this or am I too old school in my views and need to "get with the times"? I just feel Bond has been around for 50 years now and I don't wanna see the things to have kept it going just disappear. There are other spy movies that can be made but I would like to see the things that make Bond what it is still be around.

You still have elements of Bond movies, a la Skyfall but structurally most of the movie should be different. No "Bond girl has to live to the end of the movie" or "There must be two main Bond girls" or "Bond must end up with the girl" or "Bond's action scenes have to be gimmicky"

I disagree that Brosnan's movies being formulaic is what killed the post Goldeneye movies. I accredit that more towards boring plots and villains ie. Tomorrow and where do I start with Die Another Day. I actually enjoy TWINE, while its not my top 10 Bonds its a decent movie and would be a lot better if they recast Denise Richards. I'm not even saying that all of Craig's films have to be by the book but I would at least like 1 that is like what I described.

It's budget was about $250 million if I remember correctly and they had a ton of troubles during filming, including a re-write. It did good, it just didn't do gangbusters like I mentioned. $600 million WW on a $250 million budget isn't that good. Same for Spider-Man. They both made some profit but Sony has had so many bombs lately that they were on the edge of bankruptcy until Bond saved them this year with a very, very healthy profit. You can bet your ass they crank out the next Bond film as quick as they can. I wouldn't be shocked if we see it in 2 years.

But the formula is what killed it. All them had a villain who wanted to take over the world, a person who had a personal connection to Bond that dies, two Bond girls, gimmicky action scenes, and plots that got more implausible and ridiculous by the movie without having villain actors good enough to carry them out and be believable in their endeavors (like Stromberg in TSWLM).

Casino Royale still followed the same basic formula with the minor tweak that both girls die instead of just the one, and it was extremely well received. So I don't think the formula was the problem, as much as other issues.

Also, the least successful Bond film was also the one that strays from the formula the most, Licence to Kill.
