I've often wondered what the fabled third Dalton Bond film would have been like.

Walt Disney's Imagineering division was contracted to supply designs for the high-tech robots that featured in the early screenplays. Form was to follow function, according to the treatment, so they would not have necessarily been robots in humanoid form - with the exception of the villainous 'Nan'. Apparently, first drafts of potential robot designs were completed and handed over to Eon.

It's funny that I can imagine Brosnan as Bond in the 80's doing the usual stuff like flirting with Moneypenny and entering M's office

Brosnan was supposedly the one they wanted to take over the Bond role after Moore. However, his contractual obligations to Remmington Steele prevented that, and Dalton was his replacement.

Remmington Steele had actually come to an end. Brosnan was cast as Bond and all the publicity surrounding that became his own undoing. The hype it generated made people at the studios interested in Remmington Steele again, and they ended up renewing it, and Brosnan got stuck with it when he thought he was about to get out. What must've been terribly frustrating for him is that it only lasted another season before being permanently axed, by which time he had lost his chance at Bond for another 8 years. However, Brosnan later publicly admitted that losing the role at that point was probably for the best, as he had matured later by the age of 42 so that he was better suited for the role. I have to say he did look too young back in his 30s and even skinnier. Even in Goldeneye he's on the thin side. Well, everyone can see for themselves in the pictures above. He looks quite small shouldered too.

He would have never gotten away from the Remington Steele comparisons either if he did TLD and LTK

And with MGM's legal stuff being nearly unavoidable Brosnan would have probably shared the same fate as Dalton and be unable to star in a Bond for at least 6 years.

It would have been interesting to see if Brosnan would have come back for "Goldeneye"

I think Dalton in GoldenEye would've been absolutely amazing.
I'm being dead serious. Every line, mannerism, action scene, would've been incredible with Dalton in the lead.

I agree. It was a great 80's Cold War James Bond movie.

Great locals and great action scenes. I think it had one of the best Car gadget chases also.

Oh yeah, GE with Dalton would have ruled.

I actually really like Brosnan in the role too. Not quite as dark or cruel as Dalton's interpretation, didn't have the dark eyes.

It worked out for the better for Brosnan in the end, I think he would have ended up looking too young had he done Daylights. It's interesting to contemplate if the legal issues with Bond didn't eventuate whether Brosnan would have ever ended up playing him. Dalton comes back for his third film in 91, the question I wonder is would he have come back for another in 93/94 and beyond? Would EON have wanted him back? Was Brosnan always going to be Bond?

It seems to be a common thing of Bond Actors missing out on the role and then going on to play the role later. It happened with Moore, Dalton and Brosnan so perhaps Henry Cavill will finally get to play Bond in the future.

Well that all depends on how well Man of Steel does. If he becomes too big a star with that, then I don't see him being both Superman and Bond.

I think Dalton in GoldenEye would've been absolutely amazing.

Pure Dalton charm.

I would've loved to have seen Dalton in the following scenes:

- the scene in M's office where she calls him a relic of the cold war
- where he's trapped in the helicopter with Natalya
- when he's being interrogated and she gives her "boys with toys" line
- escaping from Ourumov and then the tank chase
- the "that's what keeps you alive/ alone" scene with Natalya
- the confrontation with Alec in the industrial park when Sean Bean first shows up as alive
- the face off between them on the train where Bond says that Natalya means nothing to him
- the fight between Bond and Trevelyan at the end

All of those scenes would've been awesome and better acted by Dalton. He would've made the first reappearance of Alec even darker, and also would've seemed even more cold blooded if he said that Natalya meant nothing to him. Also, imagine Dalton acting against Dench. And the fight at the end between Dalton and Bean would've been even more brutal.

Eon had been circling both Tim and Pierce for quite a few years for the role. To me, these two captured the Bond look best. Funny thing is, I once saw this picture somebody did with all of the Bond actors around a table playing cards. Funny part is, they all looked related, like Sean or Rodger is the dad and the rest of them look like sons and cousins. It's all variations on the same theme (except for the two without the dark hair and the short one)

Was Brosnan always going to be Bond?

Brosnan's former wife played the villains "call girl" in For Your Eyes Only. That's how the producers became aware of Brosnan. So yeah, he had been on the radar for quite some time. If I recall correctly, he was the FIRST choice for both The Living Daylights and GoldenEye.

I really like Brosnan and Goldeneye is one of my favorite Bond movie ever. Pity that aside from TWINE the rest of his Bond movies were either subpar or terrible. Brosnan has the looks of Connery and the dry delivery of Moore, and if he was given darker storylines like the Dalton films he might've had more success by mixing the humor and the darkness together.

Don't get me wrong I like GoldenEye as it is, but it would have ruled even more with Dalton IMO. Just as other posters have said it I am really curious as to how Dalton would've delivered a lot of the dialog, and to have my favourite visual depiction (In flesh) of Bond in one of my favourite films would've ruled for me.

Brosnan was great as being hybrid Bond.He could be tough and mencing like Connery
and he could be charmning and humoras like Moore and when they allowed him to be
he could be serious.But,he wasn't always well served by the writers and Producers.
Just Like Dalton wasn't always well served during his time as Bond.The World Is Not
enough was only one that came close to living up to Goldeneye.I enjoyed Tomorrow
Never Dies but It certinly Isn't one of best Bond film.Die Another Day was his Moonraker.
And untill It went to ICe Palace It actully worked as enjoyable film.

I only found this out recently that the title Tomorrow Never Dies came about because of a misprint. It was originally suppose to be called Tomorrow Never Lies, which makes far more sense in relation to the movie, but some fax machine print out to some studio exec made the 'L' look like a 'D'. lol.

TWINE I find to be worse than TND. TND is a safe and generic bond with very little unique attributes, but its an okay movie. TWINE screwed itself over right when renard started acting like a ***** and denise Richards showed up.

Both main villains sucked however.

Speaking of what ifs, I would have to see lazenby's diamonds are forever. It would have been much different since they only retooled the movie that way for Sean connery. Also I think he would have grown into the role. It's not like roger Moore was that good a bond his first outing. I don't think roger Moore was very good as bond until the spy who loved me. I also think that all of the movies after had better performances from Moore than lald and mwtgg.

Personally, I'd love to see Tom Hardy get a shot at it.

There are alot of guys I wouldn't mind seeing playing Bond once Craig is done. Micheal Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill and so on.

I would like to see Jason Issacs play a Bond Villain as well. His said its his dream role to play a Bond Villain. Micheal Sheen was rumored for a villain role a few years ago too and I wouldn't mind seeing him play a bad guy.

I can't see Tom Hardy as Bond at all. I suppose his most similar role was in "Inception", but I find it an unconvincing parallel.

TWINE is a mess, but worthwhile just for Sophie Marceau's villainess. She deserved a better film.
