James Bond In Skyfall - Part 3

Yeah, I really liked LALD score too. Maybe because I always liked that spy funk blaxpliotation sound from the era.

The thing about Live and Let Die is that I think people's reaction to be the movie will based on how much you love blaxploitation or at least the blaxploitation style becuase let's be honest, if James Bond was a black character this would have been a pure blaxploitation down to a tee.

Right, but in a way it makes sense because Bond travels to America, and that's pretty much how the United States was back then. From a historical point of view, it makes it interesting. Just like someone else pointed that Moonraker was made as a response to Star Wars.
It can also be applied to You Only Live Twice, that it becames almost a martial arts/japanese kinda movie. It's all about the surroundings of the character, and how the movie changes from that point of view. I'm not saying is good or bad, is just interesting.

Personally, DR, I think Live and Let Die is up there with some of those scores.

Here's my list:

The elite 8 (The best in my opinion)
1. From Russia With Love
2. Goldeneye
3. Goldfinger
4. The Spy Who Loved Me
5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
6. Casino Royale
7. Thunderball
8. Dr. No

The good ones:
9. The Living Daylights
10. You Only Live Twice
11. For Your Eyes Only
12. Live and Let Die

The "meh" ones (the average ones)
13. License to Kill
14. Tomorrow Never Dies

The below average movies:
15. Quantum of Solace
16. The World is Not Enough
17. Octopussy

The worst
18. A View to a Kill
19. Moonraker
20. Diamonds Are Forever
21. Die Another Day
22. The Man With The Golden Gun

DAF and MR have John Barry scores, with most of their musical cues not that different from YOLT and some of his other work. Octopussy is another John Barry score. As much as I'm not a fan of DAF, one of its redeeming features for me is its score.

I don't like the overly-electronic score of Goldeneye. I'm not really a fan of David Arnold either though. His scores sound as much a pastiche of Barry's work as Brosnan is a pastiche of previous Bonds.

Dr No isn't bad, but it does sound at times like a 50s B movie.

FRWL has some gorgeous pieces - 007/Bond Takes the Lektor, Gypsy Camp, Girl Trouble, The Golden Horn, etc.

Why no love for GoldenEye, DR?

I'm not fond of Brosnan. I find him painful to watch sometimes. Goldeneye is a decent movie, and his best effort, but I would've preferred Dalton in it. However, it's near the bottom (or top, whichever way you look at it) of my top 12 worst movies, with worst being a relative term since I wouldn't call all of them bad. It's just that if you have a top 10, then the rest of them will automatically fall into a bottom 10 (or 12). It would fall into my top 15.

I should have been more clear: That's my list of favorite movies, not favorite scores.

Ok I see. It makes more sense now. It wouldn't have made sense for you to like some of those other John Barry scores and not MR, DAF, Octopussy and AVTAK, as those are all pretty good. I wouldn't know of many fans who like the Goldeneye score either.

The best thing musically about Goldeneye is the theme. I don't really like any of the scores for Brosnan's films.

OHMSS is the best Bond movie ever. I'll defend that movie until I die.

Lazenby is what prevents it from being that. No matter how good the film is the bloke playing Bond is what undoes all the great work.

I'll thrown in my list.

Goldfinger
Russia
GoldenEye
Casino
Daylights
Thunderball
Dr No
OHMSS
Eyes Only
Spy

I don't bother ranking everything else as they all sit in either the passable, mediocre or poor category. The only sure thing is that Golden Gun collects the wooden spoon well and truly.

From the first Bond series(Dr No through Die Another Day) I go like this.

1:From Russia with Love
2:Goldeneye
3:On her Majestry's secret service
4:You Only Live Twice
5:The World Is Not Enough
6:For Your Eyes Only
7:Goldfinger
8:The Spy who Loved me
9:Dr No
10:Tomorrow Never Dies
11:Octopussy
12:Thunderball
13:Die Another Day
14:Licence to Kill
15:The Living Daylights
16:A View to a Kill
17:Live and Let Die
18:Moonraker
19:The Man with the Golden Gun
20:Diamonds are Forever

I tend to put QoS in the same camp as The World is Not Enough. It lacks polish, and where the TWINE had creative problems,

I seem to remember Brosnan clashing with roger spottiswoode(TND) and Michael Apted(TWINE)

My Top 10:

Casino Royale
Goldeneye
Goldfinger
The Spy Who Loved Me
From Russia With Love
For Your Eyes Only
You Only Live Twice
Thunderball
Dr. No
The Living Daylights

I don't think he was really in his prime before in the late 80s. He looked far too thin, too metrosexual and not rugged enough. Even in Goldeneye, he still had that look. In TND he had a slightly more masculine look and had also deliberately put on some weight (he had hit the gym) so that he looked better built. I think he looked at his most suitable in TND and maybe TWINE. By DAD he looked like he'd been hitting the pork pies and doughnuts.

I don't understand all the complaining. In comparison to everyone else, Pierce Brosnan looked the best. For example, Roger Moore. How can you complain about Brosnan when you have 7 movies with Roger Moore? In Moore's first 4 movies, he looks like a goofball. And in his last 3, he was already an old man in his `50s. Then, you have Sean Connery whose eyebrows changed shape and size from movie-to-movie. And let's not get started on the ridiculous wig. George Lazenby looked more like a stunt performer than a leading man. Timothy Dalton isn't attractive. And, Daniel Craig is even uglier. Pierce Brosnan is the best the franchise has had to offer in terms of looks. Granted, he may be a tad too meterosexual, but then again, that's who Bond is. Bond is a British gentlemen who spents time with high class people. Of course he's gonna care about his appearence.

I love blaxploitation, but still hate "Live and Let Die." That genre just has no place in this series.

Pierce Brosnan IS very underated In My book. For me him and Sean Connery are best of Bond. It's funny when you consider the writers and Producers who thought Die Another
Day was great can continue to do Bond films and get no grief for DAD yet Brosnan who helped revie the series gets all the grief. Some now forget all those people who
said there ISn't place for Bond In post COld war or that films like XXX are the spy films people now want to see.Yet Die Another Day back In 2002 outgrossed XXX.And back In 1995 Goldeneye was biggest film In series In US In years.

I really hope The producers with Skyfall are ready to make a real James Bond film again.Stop trying to be like other spy films and be Bond.If they can cross elements of Casino royale with classic Bond films they could finally have a Danial Craig film that feels like part of Bond series since they obvisously want It both ways. They want to rebot bond from first 20 films yet they still want the rebooted bond to be part of established series since they call Casino Royale,QOS,and Skyfall Bond 21,22,and 23.

I really hope Skyfall makes up for QoS, Casino really was the kick in the butt the series needed but was sadly followed up by a less than worthy successor. The worst thing for Bond now would be for Skyfall to be of QoS quality.

Pierce only had one great Bond film; otherwise he was a great Bond that only had 1 good flick.

And so by your opinion you don't think Casino Royale was 'real' Bond? Maye I read it wrong.

WE all know that QoS was a rushed prject partly due the the writers affecting the movie's script .
I do feel that there really is no room for error for Skyfall. The script was done when the whole MGM debacle happened and the producers stopped production.
And once the everything was settled , production resumed. So they ave had enough time to fine tune the script.

As much as i'm looking forward to Skyfall is baffles me why the budget is as big as QoS.

Oh they do get grief. I wish EON would ditch Purvis and Wade and get some other team to work on the series. We just haven't mentioned them here too much because we've been talking about the actors who've portrayed Bond. But fans aren't always that fond of that team.

I Think everybody is hoping for that, and with the quality Cast and director that they have got for this I want to be able to place Skyfall in my top 5 at least.

Biggest lie I've read in this thread lol now seriously, Dalton had the perfect look for Bond IMO, he was handsome but had a dark quality to him. Brosnan is too much of a pretty boy and a metrosexual that I can not believe him as a badass. Bond is supposed to have class and to blend in with that kind of people but not to the extent of looking like Brosnan looked, and for the people whishing he had gotten the role back in 1987, it would've been worse he looked even more frail and boy-ish back then.

Brosnan's shoulders were definitely even narrower back at the time of Remmington Steele. There are women who still look feminine who have shoulders broader than his.

Pierce only had one great Bond film;

Yeah, but that's true of everyone EXCEPT Sean Connery. So, you can't penalize Brosnan for that.

Brosnan is too much of a pretty boy and a metrosexual that I can not believe him as a badass.

Ian Fleming's Bond was a typical British snob from the 1950s. He was, shall we say, a David Niven type. So, adapted for the 1990s, Pierce Brosnan is an accurate portrayal of Flemings Bond. Even ChickenScratch, the resident Bond novel fan, is a fan of Brosnan's look.
