A lot of the concept art for SS just screams "what the **** were you even thinking?"

The Joker looks like a pimped out Robin Thicke there. LOL

That's horrendous. Unfortunately most of the concept art for this movie can be described like that.

I hear Macklemore in my head every time I see that concept art and it infuriates me.

As lowdown and dirty as Ledger's Joker looked, he at least worked within the context of The Dark Knight and even outside of that, still a re-imagining, but valid one. Even though a new interpretation is no doubt going to look different, in regards to Leto's Joker, if you took away the tattoos, grill, chains, and such, he'd probably look a bit more...what you'd expect from the Joker.

The tattoos and the grills didn't bother me - I barely noticed them, as I was too focused on Leto's performance. Yeah, I don't like them, but they didn't bother me. The only thing that bothers me about them is the fact that it cements Joker's overall look into this "OG" style, which, I'll admit, was fine for this movie - a director is allowed to leave their mark - but should it be permanent, then I won't be at all happy.

My main gripe is with Leto's performance... I don't know whether I love it or hate it. He's a phenomenal actor and that goes without saying... but he was simply not a phenomenal Clown Prince. Under Ayer's script and direction, I couldn't care less if he received more screen time, he wasn't written well or performed refreshingly by Leto - pretty much all I saw and heard was a Jim Carrey wannabe. He was just so "grating".

Can Joker be salvaged and can Leto keep his job? I know the latter's answer is "yes", but as for the former? I simply don't know.

Yeah, basically when that club scene started I felt really awkward and could only see Carrey in my head. I don't know... honestly I just won't see Skwad ever again.

I saw some horrid fusion of Carrey and Johnny Depp with occasional attempts at Heath's Joker voice thrown in for good measure.

While I don't agree with the narrative, I do understand why so many hardcore B-Man fans are apprehensive to this Joker.

And for them, I do think he can be salvaged. I think there's a way to balance his look without doing a total revamp. I feel like the jester skulls, playing cards, etc. were nice touches, but the "HAHA" and "Damaged" tattoos were when they started trying too hard.

Basically, I'm just saying there's a way to modernize his look while avoiding it being dated, per se.

And I don't mind the slow building laugh, but Leto should stick to the laugh presented during the chemical wedding & rooftop attack scenes. It's perfectly Joker.

Maybe pull back on some of the Scarface vibe with the wardrobe, too. But, I can't imagine Affleck would follow a style anywhere near Ayer's so I'm sure we have to worry about that.

Affleck, get rid of that damn jewelry. ALL OF IT.

There is such unabashed hatred for this Joker looks....it's quite ridiculous, but I honestly think that people are projecting their personal "real world" preferences when it comes to this characters; do you hate tattoos, bling, all of that gangstah **** on people in the real world?? I really cringe at people like that in the real world, but maybe that's the point with this Joker; you're not supposed to like his style, you're supposed to be put off by it....just a thought.

Personally, I LOVE his look, the Joker is my favorite fictional character, among many reasons, because there is no "the Joker would never do this" thing with him, nothing is off-limits; the character has been reinvented and reinterpreted so many times, that I actually wanted to see something new with the character and we got it.

I've seen people going over and over again with the same thing "get rid of the tattoos and the grill, bring back the purple suit!!", and I REALLY hope they stick to this look (partially to piss off those people :D )

Thing is, conceptually, the Joker's look is all about being flashy and flamboyant, a purple suit might have been quite flamboyant in 1940, but nowadays is pretty tame (hell, I wore a purple suit for my wedding), Joker has to be the "loudest" guy around, and it doesn't get any "louder" than his current look.

After seeing the extended cut, I can confirm that I absolutely love Leto's Joker, and that the editing totally destroyed his performance; I think he was going for a ver "spastic" performance, with sudden changes in speed and body language and cadence; sadly, to be able to appreciate this things, you need to be able to have the camera on him for more than a few seconds at the time, you need to be able to see him go through all of this emotional waves....

I think if the character had been written or promoted as a cameo (as it turned out being) instead of a main character, it would have come more as a tease of what's the come instead of people being disappointed in how little of him we got (which I'm sure influences people's feelings about him to some extend).

I really hope he comes back for The Batman, because the Joker really shines when interacting with Bats and we got none of that yet.

I haven't seen enough of Joker to judge yet. It was a small role, no chance to give much of a performance.

Yeah I can't wait to see him with a good script.
I'm looking forward to it. He'll be giving it everything I'm sure and Joker is not a character that is suited to quick short scenes, you don't really get what he is about that way.

Probably a dumb question, but what's Skwad? Suicide Squad?

I saw some horrid fusion of Carrey and Johnny Depp with occasional attempts at Heath's Joker voice thrown in for good measure.

It was more bad Jim Carey impression than anything else. The performance came off as a desperate attempt to act crazy.

It's not ridiculous, it's justified. And to answer your question no I don't hate tattoos or jewellry or the gangstah look in the real world. It works for certain people. Just like I don't hate body piercings or shaved heads in the real world, but that doesn't mean I want the Joker sporting that look.

 to most of this.

People cringed at this Joker, but not in a way they intended. He looks like a 13-year old juggalo serving time in juvey for stealing a chain wallet from hot topic's idea of cool.

I actually think the GA was fine with him, for the most part. The character was one of the top Halloween costumes among adults this year.

I don't mind tattoos for the most part, but forehead tattoos are aesthetically displeasing regardless of context. The grillz were visually striking, but they hindered Leto's ability to speak and therefore required some very obvious ADR work. And the white makeup was very inconsistent throughout the film.

Take away the forehead tattoo, and the design works for me. But he could have looked like he was ripped straight from the comic books and it still wouldn't have saved this disaster of a performance.

Kudos, sir. Couldn't agree more. Except on the jewelry (or at least the chain(s). :woot:

Also, I still can't say I see a bad performance (I see horrible editing) but I can agree with the inconsistency in the make-up. Even in the extended scene of Harley chasing down the Joker. Look at how much whiter his tone is in the car compared to once he gets out.

They need to actually whiten his skin up all the way...like they did for Cesar and Jack. Hell, even Heath's face-paint was lighter than the tone they with for Leto. I think they got it 100% right for the rooftop/helicopter scene and for the very last scene where Harley gets broken out but everywhere else it's far too light.

Sometimes his skin tone looked too...normal.

I actually liked the shade of white they used for him in most of his scenes. The problem was the makeup artists didn't do a very good job of evening it out, so it looked splotchy at times. Then there were other times where they threw continuity out the window completely and overdid it. Compare how he looked in his first scene to how he looked in the final scene and the difference is almost night and day. Most likely a result of reshoots.
