There is such unabashed hatred for this Joker looks....it's quite ridiculous, but I honestly think that people are projecting their personal "real world" preferences when it comes to this characters; do you hate tattoos, bling, all of that gangstah **** on people in the real world?? I really cringe at people like that in the real world, but maybe that's the point with this Joker; you're not supposed to like his style, you're supposed to be put off by it....just a thought.
Personally, I LOVE his look, the Joker is my favorite fictional character, among many reasons, because there is no "the Joker would never do this" thing with him, nothing is off-limits; the character has been reinvented and reinterpreted so many times, that I actually wanted to see something new with the character and we got it.
I've seen people going over and over again with the same thing "get rid of the tattoos and the grill, bring back the purple suit!!", and I REALLY hope they stick to this look (partially to piss off those people

)
Thing is, conceptually, the Joker's look is all about being flashy and flamboyant, a purple suit might have been quite flamboyant in 1940, but nowadays is pretty tame (hell, I wore a purple suit for my wedding), Joker has to be the "loudest" guy around, and it doesn't get any "louder" than his current look.
After seeing the extended cut, I can confirm that I absolutely love Leto's Joker, and that the editing totally destroyed his performance; I think he was going for a ver "spastic" performance, with sudden changes in speed and body language and cadence; sadly, to be able to appreciate this things, you need to be able to have the camera on him for more than a few seconds at the time, you need to be able to see him go through all of this emotional waves....
I think if the character had been written or promoted as a cameo (as it turned out being) instead of a main character, it would have come more as a tease of what's the come instead of people being disappointed in how little of him we got (which I'm sure influences people's feelings about him to some extend).
I really hope he comes back for The Batman, because the Joker really shines when interacting with Bats and we got none of that yet.
