Jared Leto IS The Joker - - - - - - - - Part 17

I would argue that most, if not all, flashback scenes did not need to be in the film to tell a good story.

"Honka honka" is one of those things where an actor needs to break rank and tell the director, "This is ****ing stupid. I'm not saying that."

You'd think Leto would've done that.

I guarantee you Nicholson or Ledger would've called bull**** right then and there. Especially the former.

I get that Joker was supposed to be mocking Monster T, but it could've been done so much better. There are a litany of examples that perfectly prove David Ayer is not the guy to handle characters from the Bat-verse.

Probably saw the whole script and went with it. Didn't the cast all sign on before the script was even finished?

Not really a fan of "Badass Doctor Quinzel" in the motorcycle scene, but then again, I guess being crazy gives her abilities :o

So we're blaming all of Jared's performance on Ayer?

Nah...

Robbie was just as cringeworthy as Harley in some scenes, so I'll blame Ayer for that, too :p

I say we blame everyone. Including catering.

Driving a motorcycle counts as a special ability? :loco:

Sorry, that's just nitpicking for the sake of it.

Because it's everybody's fault except for the guy who actually gave the performance.

"He would have been good if movie theaters didn't charge $10 for popcorn!"

I don't think anyone here ever implicated that everyone is at fault but Leto. I have, however, seen people saying they'd like to see what kind of performance he can give under someone who understands the character better.

:oldrazz:

I'm not talking about "driving a motorcycle" but the way she skids the bike to the pavement and then waits for Joker to maybe not run her over like she is a badass chick :funny: maybe if we had seen a bit more of their relationship prior to this moment (did he train her or something...?) then that wouldn't feel so out of place to me. Which brings me to another point why I don't particularly care for the Joker/Harley relationship in this film...

In Mad Love, we can understand why Harley would fall for The Joker. We see them develop their relationship. In SS, it seems like she gets with The Joker because..."Oh she's just crazy". There's no development to their relationship.

Yep. I remember when they first showed the therapy picture I was really looking forward to those scenes in Suicide Squad. Completely skimmed over. What a missed opportunity of some great dialogue and character building.

This movie has no connective tissue. It feels like they just filmed scenes and mashed them all together. During the motorcycle scene where Harley points a gun at joker, Joker denies her and tells her to go away, but in the next flashback scene their in ace chemicals together.

His performance was great, most captivating in the movie and most like the Joker I grew up with out of what we've gotten thus far. Sure some of the dialogue is bad and he ain't hardly in the movie, but his performance was good in what we had.

Idk why y'all keep coming in the thread if you hate it so much

So true.
For the record, I blame Ayers for the material and I blame Leto for the performance. Both were awful.

I'm sure that was a victim of cut footage because WB didn't care enough about the Extended Cut. In one of the set videos where it shows Joker slapping Harley she gets into the car with him so something happens there. Here they used a take without the slap and that bit of her getting into the car with him. In the novel the ace chemical scene is longer too.

That reminds me I wonder what was going on here

A damn shame they cut so much. :(

People try to justify it by saying "it's not a Joker movie" but if that's the case, why film all that **** in the first place? There's literally almost enough footage cut for an entire other movie.

And advertise him so much. People are right to complain about it.

Just saw some of his extended scenes, and boy does Leto's Joker performance just leave a bad aftertaste. He's not funny, and everything from his appearance to his voice just seems like Leto's trying too hard. It's all just too much and overbearing.

On the flip side, Margot's accent in the motorcycle scene is still so good. I was thinking of Joel Edgerton's performance in Black Mass, but Australians are really good at nailing different American accents. (And Benedict Cumberbatch too I guess, but he isn't Australian)

I felt like Leto's Joker had flashes of an interesting take. I'm looking specifically at the first scene with Harley. He's restrained and menacing and seductive, like a panther or a coiled snake. That to me is very interesting. But then he veers into a campy Jim Carrey impression for the rest of the movie, that just breaks that vibe.

It's just clear that he didn't have enough time to crystallize a concept of the character. Ayer talks about experimentation a ton -- to me that says "We knew we needed Joker, we had no idea how to do him, so we had Leto mess around on set, completely uncensored." Some of the scenes seem totally improvised. I would be shocked if that Monster T scene was scripted at all.

A director with a vision would have stepped in at some point and said "Good, you got it, let's film it like that." But Ayer was just treading water, and encouraged Leto to go in every direction at once, then cherry-picked what he liked.

Aussie's tend to do really good American accents (Sam Worthington excepted). Look at Nicole Kidman. After I saw Batman Forever, I had no idea she wasn't American.

I personally think Cumberbatch's accent is horrid. He hits his r's way too hard. It sounds very OTT.

Yeah, I love Cumberbatch, but his accent in Dr Strange left a lot to be desired. Margot was really solid all around.
