Jared Leto IS The Joker - - - - - - - - Part 17

I wouldn't shed any tears if we never saw Leto's Joker again. Even with the screentime Leto had in Suicide Squad, I didn't care for him (which is disappointing, because despite the try-hard look for the Joker, I was pretty adamant about how I thought that Leto would knock it out of the park acting-wise).

Love him or hate him, I'm going to have to agree with the video that MovieBob made about how he would "fix" the DCEU Batman. I love the thought of Leonardo DiCaprio being the new Joker, to be quite honest. It probably will never happen, but I love the idea of it happening.

I know that a lot of people feel sorry for Jared Leto over how his scenes got butchered and whatnot. In a way, I feel bad for him as well ... But a part of me thinks that the stuff that got cut might have hurt the film (and Leto's performance) had some of his stuff been left in.

With the stuff we saw in the movie, I am not convinced that Leto's cut scenes were "amazing." I think he's pretty try-hard and cringey in the stuff they left in. I'm not convinced the cut scenes are somehow fantastic ...

It wouldn't bother me if we never saw him again. Barring a complete makeover, I simply have no interest in seeing a continuation of this Joker.

Snarky snark snark.

You do realize that a lot of movies have stuff cut out, right? Most of the time (not all of the time), for a good reason, right?

Is it possible that the cut Jared Leto Joker scenes were amazing? Absolutely. I think it's just as possible that the cut scenes were awful, too.

If you like Leto's Joker ... Good for you. I did not care for him, based on what was shown in the final film.

el mayimbe's been on a roll as of late

Maybe he's gotten better sources lately.

Yes, a lot of movies cut things out. The difference? Those movies don't have 90% of the marketing and a vast majority of the hype surround a particular character to relegate him to a mere 7-10 minutes of screen-time.

Ayer simply had no clue how to really use the Joker. If he did, Enchantress and her forgettable brother wouldn't have been the "main" villains of the film. Nor would the teams' initial outing be a "save the world" endeavor.

I can roll snake-eyes three times in a row on a pair of dice. Does this mean my dice are magic?

El Mayimbe is still the same dubious oracle he's always been. Getting lucky with a few guesses doesn't change this.

Yeah, I take his word with less than a grain of salt.

To express an opinion, whether it's positive or negative ?

Thank you hellblazer103.

Agreed. I see enough of Leto Joker to know I not like his version and he not leave me wanting more. If character is good then they leave you wanting more even if they only have few scenes.

Leonardo?

Jared is perfect for the role and one of the best actors they could've chosen, I put blame solely on Ayer's writing and the editing studio for chopping up what little Joker there was in the film.

I mean come on, give anyone else the same exact bits Jared got in the film and it still wouldn't be any better.

All of this, bravo!

That's how I feel too

Thing is...I blame the studio more than blaming it on one guy whose vision wasn't taking seriously to the point that WB decided to go in themselves and muck with it. I don't think the reshoots would have done enough justice to make the film any better...obviously from the way they edited the crap out of it, the reshoots didn't help except ruin the tone cause they left so much stuff on the cutting room floor.

I would be interested in reading what was originally shot and was cut and compare those versions to the reshoots...

Who knows...maybe some of the original scenes had to be redone? Maybe some of the reshoots were meant to make the original scenes better? Enhance them?

I'm sure there have been alternate takes...if I recall. Eh...whatever.

All of this Dicaprio BS is obnoxious. Mark my words, Leonardo Dicaprio playing the Joker would be one of the most laughable performances/cinematic blunders of all time. He's a fine actor sure, the man is NOT a character actor by any stretch. He literally sounds the same in every film(Like a 17 yr old high school kid with a squeaky voice). Like Django for instance, he just sounded like ol Jack Dawson but with a southern accent etc.

People need to ease up on Jared, was he the best Joker we've had? Probably not, but he damn sure wasn't the worst and I think with better writing and more to do he could really shine.

Disagreed. Nobody need to ease up on Leto Joker if they not like him and think he the worst. Entitled to own opinion.

I think Leo Dicaprio great actor and would be brilliant Joker.

Certainly Ayer and studio.

Thats not necessarily the way it goes. with his take on it, after Nicholson and ledger, we needed more to"get"it. the movie itself was a hot topic neon mess of nothing. Ayer wasnt the guy. The studio is obviously clueless. I mean they have that hack Zack Snyder still involved. There needs to be a complete overhaul. I dont like leto... Hate his band. But the guy can act. He and we have been screwed

Ya know, I was thinking.... If they DO recast, Martin Wallström has enough of a Leto esque look/vibe to him that recasting with him probably wouldn't even be noticeable, lol ( To me, he's basically like a hybrid of Jared Leto and Mads Mikkelsen ) . Watching him on Mr. Robot convinced me .

I'm with others when they say they wouldn't miss Leto's Joker should he never pop up again.

I found every Joker scene lacking and cringe-inducing. I was backing Leto all the way, but he just didn't pull it off.

And what makes you think that Leto's Joker "didn't work"? What didn't work was them marketing the heck out of his role and then idiotically removing half of his scenes from the movie. The #1 complaint I've herd about the film is that there wasn't enough of him. A bunch of grumpy fanboys complaining on the Internet does not a failure make.

The scenes that made it to the film didn't exactly wow the audience though, people are talking about Harley and Deadshot, not this Joker. He's a non entity, some hate him, others love him but by and large he failed to make any impression and I do think he had enough screen time to make one. Besides movie cuts may have reduced his story but at the end of the day his job in this film was to be Harley's boy friend/inform us about her character. This characters entire purpose was to prop HQ, reducing his scenes may have actually been a blessing for him. What exactly were you expecting from his extra scenes? me more of the same but with troubling stuff that may have gotten the studio in hot waters. They got the women demograph pretty well with SS and it would have certainly been foolish to go with stuff that may have potentially alienated them.
I'm all for giving Leto another chance but the character needs a drastic overhaul both in terms of story and design. This character was conceived not as Batman's number one foe but as Harley's dick boy friend and I for one dont want to see the latter in a Batman film. For now I think the first two Batman films should be Joker free, do a third one with Leto, no need to rush him on to the big screen.

+1. But I mostly blame it on lack of direction, terrible writing and poor design.

Let's keep the discussion on Jared Leto's Joker and not your fellow posters, please.

Two of the most common complaints I’ve read about “Suicide Squad” have been not enough Joker, regardless of whether they liked Leto’s Joker or not or weren’t sure; and not enough Joker and Harley as a couple. Leto and Robbie have very good chemistry, which is something that can be difficult to cast for. It would seem to me that if the general audience liked Leto and Robbie as a couple, it would be kind of counterproductive to recast the Joker if they’re planning to film more of the Joker and Harley together. Now if Harley’s spin off is only Harley, and the Joker is only going to turn up by himself in future movies, then they could potentially recast the Joker. However, I don’t think it would’ve mattered who they had cast as the Joker in terms of the mixed reception the performance got in “Suicide Squad” because a lot of fans hated the design, which was director’s fault, not the actor’s; the script was rushed and poorly written, again, the director, not the actor; a different movie was shot than what we saw, with the most major changes having been made to the Joker’s part; how is it the actor’s fault that he played the role to the script he was given (which I think was more complicated than just being Harley’s boyfriend) and then the film was radically altered to make him a one-note character?, the movie was edited by the company that made the trailers and not the director, resulting in choppy editing and the splicing together of different takes that sometimes didn’t mesh, and finally, the Joker appeared in the movie for something like seven minutes. I don’t see how any actor could’ve overcome all that to turn in a better performance than Leto’s. Of course, I know there are people out there who aren’t going to like any part Jared Leto plays simply because he’s Jared Leto, so there's that.

I wouldn't mind one way or the other if we see leto as joker. He can be rescued, but it'll take exceptional writing. You have to make him terrifying. He was just a lost puppy searching for Harley in SS. Make him completely despicable.

I could accept the change too as his SS portrayal didn't necessarily need to be serious given the tone they went with on that film. Look forward to seeing him in his environment in a BatFleck film.

I definitely want Leto to stay.
The Joker needs to be part of the DCEU.
Tweaking his portrayal would make more sense than recasting or never using the joker again.
Leto is a good actor. If he dials back his performance a little and has better material to work with, I think he could be great.

I liked Jokers grill and tattoos, but I wasn't loving the scenes of him coming off as a cheesy night club owner dressing like a pimp. I honestly didnt get that; is there a history of Joker being an insane mob boss like Falcone?

In Azarello's Joker novel he's far more of a mob boss than straight up anarchist, & Batman '89 shows him in a very similar light, especially his pre-Joker days. Leto's version, IIRC, took a lot of inspiration from the aforementioned novel, so those choices make sense in that regard.

Same. I never liked the design, but I thought Leto was going to give a great performance that would possibly save it for me.

And in the novel, he skins a guy alive in a strip club, but the movie went with the PG-13 friendly version of just shooting him in the head. A bit of a nitpick, maybe, but that still kind of annoys me.

And that was a terrible Johnny Frost.... The Johnny of the graphic novel was actually a pretty well written character IMHO.
