The Dark Knight Know how i got these scars?...

he says "go back to ripping off mob dealers?" to Batman in the interrogation scene.. what he has on his face, apart from a Chelsea Grin/Glasgow Smile are called "snitch cuts"/"snitch smile". It's a form of punishment given to those who rip off/lie/snitch on mafia crime families. The fact that he lies throughout the whole move shows that he has trouble with the truth and it seems like a family caught him out and punished him

Y'know that is probably the most plausible reason I have heard yet. That is pretty interesting if it was what happened. But it is best we don't know.

I also agree when Joker said to Batman at the end "You want to know how I got these scars?" and I'm like "**** yeah, another story and since this is the end it's gonna be sweet" and then Batman interrupts him. My reaction was "ah, couldn't you wait 30 seconds Bats."

You wanna know how I got these scars? Well, a long long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I tried out for the part of Anakin Skywalker. George Lucas said I was too good of an actor for one of his movies, so I became sad that I lost the part. George looked at me and, with his lightsaber he cut a smile in my face, saying "Why so serious?"

Winner.

Y'know, the more I watch this, the more it becomes apparent to me that the Joker's whole image is just like Batman's, which is to say its made up. I don't believe those scars came from anything sinister, just like he loves to say he doesn't have a plan while orchestrating elaborate deathtraps for people all over the place. His stories are nothing more than trying to add effect to his persona, just like Bruce running around as a bat to scare people.....

Know how I got these scars? So, a few years ago there was this movie Broke Back Mountain, where I totally[censored for the kiddies]And if you try to stuff something that big into your mouth, it's bound to leave an impression.

I found it interesting that when he told Gambol the WSS story it was with his father and how it was his fault for the scarring . At the party when he comes in looking for Dent and he goes down the line of guests and he gets to the older gentlemen and tells him he is like his father and he hates him.

I think the "You remind me of my father....and I hated my father!" line was there so you immediately remember the "Why So Serious?" story from earlier in the film.....because from there he goes straight into telling Rachel the different story about how he got the scars.....and it really helps to show the audience how much of a liar he is.

I thought of it when someone(don't remember who) said the guy who played Anakin(can't think of his name ) would be a good replacement for Heath which is the stupidest thing I've heard.

Someone also said Johnny Depp would be a good replacement.

The whole interregation room scene... the Joker's understanding of both the mob and cops and how these "organizations" work, saying how they'd cast Batman out at the first sign of trouble... seemed to tell what happened to him to me.

My personal view is that he ended up with the short end of the stick when a deal of some kind went bad with the mob, and somehow ended up "thrown to the dogs" by his commrades, being cut up for ratting possibly when he never actually ratted or something similar... then later he went on to rip everyone off on purpose and cause chaos.

What's neat is that by not explaining such a powerful character it makes it easy and fun for everyone to come up with their own ideas about him. I love this.

I truly think that he's been crazy from the get go, and if not, got the cut smile at a young age & due to his parents or some twist of events, he truly lost his mind. Then again, I wouldn't exactly say he's crazy but, something had to have happened that made him that way.

thats the best explanation so far. but what could it be that made him turn to chaos i wonder...

I love when he says "you wanna know how i got these scars"

The Joker is supersane.

The world would be a much better place if people occasionally blew up corrupt officials.

But that's just my take.

I think were destined to debate this forever. LOL

I did kind of notice that the wife story is kind of like his original story in The Killing Joke, except in the comic she was pregnant and died instead of just leaving him.

Anyone notice that he moves his eyes to the left alot during the first story. I heard that was an indication of a liar. Probably a myth though

Why does everyone think he made the stories up?? maybe both stories were true I mean if you look at both scars, one looks neatly cut (father cutting him with a kitchen knife.) and the other one looks messy (razor in mouth.) Why am i the only one who see's this??? I feel like im taking crazyy pills!!

Considering even in the cartoons the Joker blamed his dad for the way he turned out, it wouldn't surprise me that's really how he got them. Then on the other hand, he told that story to win over Miss Quinn, but I'm going off topic. Guess we'll never really know.

my lone theory, he got a bad wound on both his cheeks, high up on em', and the blood trickled down into a big red grin, and idk, he "traced" over it so to say.....not really a theory, but I thought it'd be cool...

the man has got a point,., it seemed funny that everytime joker tried to make a conversation he talked about the scars

yea he could of got the scars from both events, it could explain his inner pain and the fact he wants everyone else to share his pain. i mean the wife story was quite tragic, he cuts himself to make her feel better "and she cant stand the sight of me!!". now whats that gonna do for your world perspective? lol

sorry, but considering that they could have easily cut 20 minutes from this movie, as good as it was, i can't help but think that 20 minutes could have been easily put into the joker's origin.

i kind of like the way he was done, don't get me wrong, but this movie would have been so much better if they'd explained the joker in some way, shape, or form.

there are so many different "origin" stories for The Joker, that it seems perfectly reasonable that the man is simply so mad that he has forgotten who he once was. He has no motive, no plan, and no direction he just is The Joker, and The Joker is whoever The Joker wants to be.

His second story with the wife wouldn't make much sense. If he already had the scars, then the scarring incident with his wife wouldn't be so difficult for her. And he wouldn't say "I just want her to know I don't care about the scars....so, I do *this* to myself".

Plus "and you know what? she can't stand the sight of me!" does not work in that context either. It's pretty clear it was meant to take a nod on the comic book origin of multiple choice.

Isn't it amazing how Ledger could make you feel for The Joker even when blatantly lying? When he was telling the story of the wife I felt quite sorry for him because he seemed so hurt about it all but it was all his mind playing tricks on him.
So far we've got four origins haven't we?
Abusive father, gambling wife, ripping off mob dealers and the whole "Jessica was the lonliest girl at the school" thing.
