Ah, the early 90's. Loved the music, but some people back then were hater-ific. God forbid a hip-hop artist or group got too much mainstream success, or everyone would turn against them. It's like MC Hammer. Hammer continued doing what he did from the beginning, but people like Ice Cube accused him of getting too soft and selling out just because his music was all over the mainstream (as if "Turn This Mutha Out" was somehow more hardcore than "Too Legit To Quit"). Things only got worse when Hammer got a Saturday morning cartoon and a Taco Bell endorsement deal.I think they suffered a lot of backlash from Hip Hop heads because they received a LOT more mainstream attention than groups who were far better (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest).
Then Hammer's career ended, and now Ice Cube is the one making children's movies. Ah, how times have changed.
