What's wrong with a European Lex? :007

How dare you? Lex is American. This is America. Who would ever think that a euro actor could play an American??? It's unheard of. It's like saying batman and superman should be played by a brit or something as ridiculous. Geez...

Phoenix will be amazing if this pans out.

If Joaquin is cast, he could very well steal the show.

I actually hope that is the case. Superman hasn't had a villain that really generates the type of hype that the Joker or Venom can stir up yet. If Lex steals the show, it gives the this generation's GA another reason to see Superman movies.

And if he did have an accent it really wouldn't matter. The performance is what matter really, the accent is just whatever. No one would be wondering "hey where is that slight accent from", even in the u.s. people have difference accents. Miami natives have an accent same as some boston natives and new york natives and alabama and texas natives among some.

Like Mad Max being an American, right? :o I think the accent does matter. Basically don't change **** just for ****'s sake.

The accent is irrelevant, some people MAY notice, some may not. I'm from Miami of Cuban decent. My english has an accent that 95% of people cant hear and a few people here and there notice it. His accent in Cowboys and Aliens and his accent in Road to Perdition may have been good, maybe it wasn't. I can't notice it. Why would that matter?

The 90s lex was Australian or pretended to be.

I really wouldn't mind if Lex came from old money somewhere in Europe. It almost helps showing the Superman is the world's hero and not just focused on one city.

They could just hire a good American actor or an actor that can do a good American accent? I think Phoenix is a far better actor than Craig, who I only like as James Bond, so I'm hoping Phoenix decides to do the film.

I'd prefer Phoenix as well. I like both, but I agree that Phoenix fits the part better.

It's funny, but I want him to be the OPPOSITE of the typical CBM villain. I want him to feel like he could exist IRL. I want him to be so naturalistic that there's a sense of unease, taking the cartoonish away from the fantasy and contrasting with Superman's bigger than life nature. I want Lex to be reflective of our dark side, but also human potential that is wasted on personal disputes and factions.

Part of eliminating the comic book-ie feel of the villian would be to not make a stupid villain like Billy Zane in Titanic that is just annoying and bad all the way thru which would make the audience wonder what ANYONE would see in that guy.

To make a life-like villain you have to create a character who isn't all bad all the time. He has to be a controversial figure. One of the best movie villains I've ever seen is probably Robert DeNiro in Godfather Part II. He should be a person that you can see why people would be drawn to him, or Forrest Whitaker in the Last King of Scotland... Controversial realistic villains are the only ones that would make sense in the real world. Otherwise, if they were Loki all day, they would have no allies at all. "Oh I want to bring darkness and destruction....." and then what? "hmmm I don't know... " that is kid stuff.

I think that we essentially want the same thing. I'm not for an overly expressive performance that a Batman villain would need, but I'd like to see the audience connect with him as much as they do the hero.

That's exactly it. The audience has to care about what happens to the villain, positively or negatively. If the villain comes off as one-dimensional, we end up being considered forgettable. Some recent examples (to me) would be the Thor 2 villain, Red Skull in Captain America, Hector Hammond in GL and Joel Schumacher everything.

Exactly, those are the words I was looking for, one-dimensional. The days of the Rocky Balboa 4 villains are gone. We should have movies that make audiences think, not just these kiddie type movies with villains that have nothing like-able about them. Even real life villains have a side to them that will attract people from Castro to Bundy to Hitler. These people were not one-dimensional, they couldn't be, otherwise they would have no following.

I want to see BILLY ZANE or TOBY STEPHENS for LEX LUTHOR :

I want audiences to be sorry OF Lex Luthor, not FOR him, if that makes any sense. That the greatest potential for earth-based human good, wealth, power, influence, popularity, intelligence..is all thrown away because of his obsession with the man from Krypton.

Josh Hartnett, holy sh$% I totally forgot that guy even existed lol. I trust WB whoever accepts the role but Phoenix is a godly casting.

I still see Josh Hartnett as being a potential Superman, even though he passed on the role. Some actors just carry that stigma with me even if they don't end up playing the part. Tom Cruise has the same thing going with Iron Man to me too.
